I did get out, too f***in cold to stay out long, did 10.6k anyway. Decided not to bring the camera as I probably would have fallen on it! Here's a pic of me returning home at the end of the run - apologies for it being dark, the flash would have just reflected off the high viz vest...

Did no running for ages, but started on the 29th again, and have done 7 five or 6 mile runs, and a 10 mile run, and will continue a fair bit of training over the next week, do ye think i would be able for the waterford half? I would have hoped for 90 mins to 1hr40 originally, but having missed so much training, anything under 1hr 50 would keep me happy. Took 80 mins for 10 miles yesterday, so i dont know if i should do it . . .any advice?

If you've done 10 and felt ok, I'd give it a lash, particularly if you're already entered. If you kept going at that same 8 min/mile pace you did the 10 mile at, you would come in at about 1:45 for the half.

Havent entered, didnt want to waste the money in case i changed my mind! ( people have previously described me as being ''as tight as a ducks arse'' . . .:o)

I might give it a lash then, thanks!

I've been browsing around this thread and others on the forum to try and get an idea of the best training schedule to follow for the half marathon. I have no definite date in mind but want to start training now. Was wondering if anyone could recommend a good plan? I've looked at the Hal Higdon plan and a few on Runners World and other websites and haven't chosen one to go with yet. I haven't been running over the past three years but I consider myself reasonably fit as I play tennis three, sometimes four nights a week for roughly two hours and I work out a bit. Any suggestions most welcome, thanks.

Sorry, just saw the thread on guides and plans. I'm an idiot.

    right so,

im doing a half marathon in glengarrif, west cork on the 1st of may. i have never done one before. i have been putting off training because it felt ages away, it only hit me yesterday that i have only 10 weeks give or take to train for it. im 27 years old, 5'9'' and 13 stone, i dont smoke but get bananas once a week. yesterday at break in work, i went to the gym, i did a 5km run on the threadmill, i ran the first 3.2km @ 10kmph, then 0.8km @ 12kmph and the final 1 km @ 14kmph. i felt fit as a fiddle up until the last km. i plan to this every day for the week and cycle to work a couple of the days. btw i wouldnt call myself very fit. what kind of training should i increase to in the time i have left, im committed to training now i started. im not looking to do amazing time in half marathon but only to finish it.

cheers lads, any advice would be greatly appreciated

14kmph is too fast for your level of fitness. Try running longer instead of running faster. 10 weeks is plenty of time if you're training right.

I'd suggest running 5 or 6 times a week, as long as you're able to recover between runs, and build up one long run once a week, reaching at least 13 miles 3 weeks before the race.

Alternatively, google for a half-marathon training program in the internet. There are dozens for all kinds of fitness available.

    man.about.town,

Another reason to download one of the internet training plans is that it gives you schedule to follow right up to the event (running 3-4 times a week is important if you want to run strong).

I know a lot of the guys here have followed the Hal Higdon training plans, as a good first step into distance events.

They are a good place to start and not to demanding if you go with some of the Started or intermediate plans.

    Good luck

I'll be there for the Bay run as well, my third time doing it. I'm not prof enough to give you advice on your training plans, but all I would suggest is to get onto the roads more than the treadmill, it will make a difference.

Hi all...been away from here for a while but while I have backed off a good bit on the miles I have managed to keep running all winter (one day of sun and I think its summer!!!)..which I am pleased about. Had been thinking about Limerick half but booked a 3 week holiday in late March instead so thats not going to wokr (my max milage at the moment is back down to about 10km). I need a suitably far away goal for when I get back..with MAYBE a mind to the DCM..Dublin race series is probably a bit far away any ideas for a race near dublin / in the mid west?

    Thanks ;)

Sportsworld 5 mile is usually around May which is a good race. Its around Walkinstown might be one to aim for in the short term?

There is a 5k in Leixlip beginning of May - I did it last year, it was a nice run.

If you are prepared to go as far as Dundalk, there is a half marathon there is early May. I have been looking for a half marathon easily accessible from Dublin early in the year, and its the most convenient one I have found.

I am doing one of the largest races in the Midwest, if not the fasting growing event in the USA. It is held in the town I am based in, Urbana-Champaign. 14,000 participated in all races last year and it is already over 12,000. Race cap for the half is set at 7,000, is at 86% of capacity. The site is illinoismarathon.com

I have done 13 races (various, mostly 5ks) so far since 2009. I was going to stick to a HH plan but am already doing 40-50 miles a week and feeling good. I have a 15k in March, 8 mile, 10k, races a week apart then finally, 5k then the next morning is the half marathon in April. Going to be a busy April. :) Good luck everyone.

This thread was such an inspiration to my training last year. I was planning on doing the Commarathon HM and the Kildare HM but a calf injury has but me back,, I think I'm just going to focus on the new "Lotto Series" including the big one in OCT as well

Yeah, I havnt done anything much since the Galway Bay half last October. Im planning on doing the 10km Great Ireland Run Sunday week in the Phoenix park, then the Womens mini marathon in June and I'm currently thinking of doing the race series with a view to attempting the marathon in October.
Its easy to say that now with it being so far away but when it comes around to June or July then I'm sure I'll be hemming and hawing about it with work and summer holidays all going on. It would be nice to finally do it and not be talking about it my whole life.

I can honestly say the move into triathlons is helping me. The different training varies and helps the head as well.

I have a few coming up, but my 1st proper is sat week so fingers crossed i get through that and can then focus on the next race. There is a great club in Laois which helps too.

I'm going to do 3 halfs as i said.

    Clontarf July
    Portlaoise Aug
    Dublin Sept

Through all that i'll have tris and some club races as well. My fitness will build and my weight will drop ( fingers crossed )

My 1st target is to beat my time of 45:34 for the 5 miler and build from there.

I've done about 5-6 races this year, starting with the Waterford half. I'm doing the Connemara full on Sunday week, my first full...eek! After that the Kildare half and then the Portumna 50k...big eek!
I'm booked for the Cliffs of Moher half too in September and I may do the Dublin half the weekend before too. Not sure if I'll be around for the DCM, may be in Oz for a wedding, but if I'm here I'll probably go for it.

I was not part of this thread, but Im going to parachute in now :)

Doing my first half next week in Connemara next week [assuming my knee's play ball]...

A fairly big step up, but I have been training for it for 3 or 4 months, so fingers crossed

Great to have another body around !

So what have you done so far, have you done the actual distance yet ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,693 ✭✭✭tHE vAGGABOND

Ive done a number of races, from 5k to 10k, with a number of distances in between. My 5k PB was set a couple of weeks ago, in the St Pats 5k around Dublin, 22.55.

My long training runs have been in the 10-12 mile range for 4 of the last 5 weeks now. I have been doing them in and around 2 hours. I was starting to give myself [not sharing with anyone else] an ultimate goal of doing the race in under 2 hours, all going well when "it" struck.

So I was sorted, and looking forward to it. Only hiccup is an appearance of an IT Band type problem over the last week or two. So I am resting and doing all that Im supposed to, and rediscovering religion, and praying :)

They have since added an extra 700 spots to the Illinois Half marathon. 500 a few weeks ago, were snapped up very fast and 200 were added this morning. It could be tomorrow and I would be ready! :)

    Hi all

Back again and I see so many familiar people from lasy year wandering back too...Its Friday night I am sitting on the sofa and I had been toying with DCM in October:eek::eek::eek:
My goal for 2011 was to do annapurna base camp and thats in the bag since the beginning of the month...so now I am looking for a new goal.

I did the HM in the race series last year and managed to finish it. Have no decided since I started poking round here that I will use HH novice to perp for Clontarf HM..12 weeks if I start on Monday - the timing was a sign fro God! Then once thats in the bag I was going to jump into week 4(ish) of the HH novice marathon plan.

I am not aiming to set the world on fire just want to do the marathon, not keel over and still want to run when its over...

Any views on this as a strategy? Thanks

Yeah, im on the same thinking as you. I was also thinking of doing the Clontarf half as an early build up. I think the dublin half comes too late really if you're a novice and have never done the marathon before.

My last half was the Galway Bay half in October and then I slacked off for the winter and just started back recently, completing the Great Ireland Run.
I think just under 12 weeks to train for the Clontarf is a reasonable target and should put you on track to get some good training in ahead of schedule which I'd say is required if you're trying to build up to a 20 mile long run for the first time. I think some of the schedules can be a little ambitious, looking for you to increase a mile or two each week if you've never trained that much before. I know I would need to be running some of the long runs a few times before increasing from say 12 to 14 miles etc.

I did Clontarf last year and it was a hard race because of a sand storm on the beach:eek: but it was a freak event and it is a lovely flat race.

I intend being there this year again and want to get a PB. I'll also be banging out some tunes as well.

I managed to finish the Connemarathon just over a week ago. I didn't use any training plan, I just run/train as I feel. I run 4-5 times a week from 5k to 12k and one LSR at the weekend usually from 21 to 35k. It got me through but I'll probably do some longer runs before my next full.
Anyone else doing the Kildare half?

I would but i couldn't justify the prices they are charging so i'm voting with my feet and going elsewhere.......to register now would cost 48 + 8.7% online fee.....52 euro:eek:

Clontarf in July is 32.10 with no staggered up pricing and you can get Portlaoise for 35 with no tech t shirt.
