The two Guards in question were only having a private (albeit bad taste) joke between themselves which I believe they are entitled to do.

It's a shame to see this thread degenerate into an anti-Guard bashathon.

Some of you 'holier than thou' moral high horse clowns need to put things into perspective and realize it for what it is, a joke between two blokes.

they are not just two blokes , they are supposed to be the upholders of law and order and their behavior both on duty and off duty should reflect this , its also a sad indictment on the training of irish police in templemore that they produce people as incompetent and unprofessional as this

    Are all Gardai boggers?
no there's plenty of dubs on the forse now and the vast amount of them are in dublin now...

They should ban tabloid rags from Templemore.

Imagine a poor woman reporting a rape after that. Rape is not a joking topic.
I guarntee they will not lose their jobs proving that the force is unprofessional. Their collegues should demand they are let go and should not wish to have them on the forse.

that is of course assuming the tapes are genuine!!

I really really hope they don't lose their jobs.

Maybe there will be a few snake in the grass collegues who will take the sickening holier than thou stance and 'demand they are let go'.

When you're wearing a Garda uniform, or when you're a teacher, a medical practitioner, a nurse or anyone who is in a position of power, you do not talk like that in any situation.

Even if they were just 'two lads talking sh*ite", it would still be pretty shocking. The fact that they were two gardai on duty means that it's completely unacceptable behaviour.

The other issue is that vulnerable people who have been victims of sexual assault have to rely on the Gardaí to be their first point of contact in a crisis and to deal with often very personal information and accounts of terrible situations. They also have to rely on them to bring prosecutions against their attackers and also to provide protection to victims.

What kind of twisted message does this "lads talking sh*ite" send out about the Gardaí. Do they find rape to be an amusing topic or something?!

Quite honestly, I think this should be dealt with directly by the Minister for Justice. It's that serious!

Also, this is the modern world, recording devices are tiny and should be assumed to be everywhere. You behave appropriately when you're on duty.
    thank for that mr perfect:rolleyes::(

Think about it again for a second. Are you really saying that a person who is a member of the Garda Síochána, should never engage in any casual conversation that is of a dodgy nature. They aren't allowed to have an immature silly laugh with a couple of friends. Is that really what you think?

Also, they treated the prisoners well, and they would not have known a thing about the conversation had it not been for the tape. How have they been unprofessional while dealing with them?

Rather than a "sickening holier than thou" stance by collegues, Garda management might dismiss them to wash their hands of this incident. This has been an absolute PR disaster for the Gardai.

From what I understand and heard from the audio this camera was put in a seperate car with Gardaì who were taking the piss amongst themselves.

Unprofessional but nobody was told they were going to be raped.

"Gimme your name or I'll rape ya!" was what was said around the 13:30 mark in the video Caco posted. Wasn't said to the protestors but was said amongst only other Gardaì in the car.

I simply cannot believe 32 people so far have thanked you for your contribution to this debate.

The gardai are custodians of the law.

The gardai are supposed to enforce the law.

The gardai are often the first line of contact rape victims encounter.

The gardai should perform their duties to the highest possible standard.

Rape is one of the most serious crimes on the statute books, murder being the worst.

Rape to a rape victim is tantamount to them being stripped of their soul

Rape victims find it exceptionally difficult to report such a violation to the authorities

This outrageous and sickening behaviour by the gardai cannot and must not be tolerated because it undermines the law enforcement agency that is an garda siochana and has the potential to dissuade rape victims from reporting crimes of sexual violence.

They should be sacked. End Of.

How were they incompetent? Because they couldn't get a name and address off someone? Maybe they should have given her a few whacks of a baton to loosen up her tongue and jog her memory then.

What should the training entail, a lobotamy?

Rigorous tests to weed out any one who finds bad taste jokes funny?

It's good to know that they haven't been totally brainwashed and left devoid of any sense of humour.

They shouldn't be fired.. that's excessive to say the least and would only serve as a token gesture anyway. They should be made to make a statement of apology and undertake an appropriate training course & the Garda Commissioner should reiterate how such behaviour is not seen as acceptable by the force in order to allay the concerns that some people have about this being a widespread problem.

Why do we pay these slow, foolish, country folk almost the highest salaries in the world to be our police force?
did you not know that there are plenty of dubs on the force now and foreign nationals as well also the height restriction has been abolished

The garda involved should be assigned to rape cases for the next few years so they learn through experience that what they were joking about to each other is not at all funny and ruins lives. Clearly they have not come to that conclusion on their own.

Exactly they didnt intend it, but its not something to be joked about. No wonder the country is in the ****, with these ass holes saying one rule for peter & another rule for paul. :pac:Its b0110x:pac:

End. Of. On. What. Grounds? I'll give you a hint, I can only think of one, and in my opinion it would be deeply unfair to sack three officers under it, so I doubt it will get near that stage. According to an article in the Belfast Telegraph (IIRC) not even the women involved want them sacked over it.

Outrageous and sickening? Come on, please. Have you considered any of the other factors in this whole thing, or is it completely the fault of the Guards in question? What do you think about these points and how maybe other people hold some responsibility if this incident dissuades potential victims to report in the future?

They made stupid distasteful joke but nothing more. It was never intended to be disrespectful nor did they actually threaten to rape anyone.

How many times have people here said something along the lines of "If you do xyz I'll kill you" or "I'm going to kill such-and-such"? And did you actually mean it or mean to cause offense? No of course you didn't.

And stop with the "but they're Gardai" thing too....they're human too.

Please can people just cut the hysterical crap, it's going to far now.

But its not and to say a garda is in as elevated a position as the Taoiseach of the country is a stretch. They are Gardai and imo most gardai in this country are absolute idiots. And many of the younger Gardai don't even have leaving certificates so what calibre of Garda do you expect. This is nothing out of the ordinary for them.
you have to have a leaving cert to join the gardai...

its that attitude and tolerance of unprofessional behavior in banking /poltics etc that has brought ireland into the mire , so having a professional police force would be a start , then maybe bankers , politicians etc etc , who knows by 2075 we might have politicians /bankers / police etc with a level of professionalism and behavior thats the norm in many country's today

Why would it? Why would it have any more of a bearing than the RCC saying more women than ever are reporting rape and sexual assault, and that the majority of women report positive experiences with AGS?
