An investigation has been launched into allegations that remarks of a sexually threatening nature were made by gardaí after the arrest of two women involved in a Corrib protest.

garda investigation has been launched in Co Mayo following allegations that remarks of a sexually threatening and disturbing nature were made by gardaí after the arrest of two women involved in an anti-Corrib gas protest last week.
A senior garda officer from outside the Mayo region has been appointed to carry out the investigation.
The two women had travelled to Mayo to support the Shell to Sea protest.
One of them had climbed onto a tractor, the other was filming her with a video camera.
Gardaí arrested both of them, put them in a patrol car and took them to Belmullet Garda Station.
The camera was placed in a second patrol car.
Last night, Shell to Sea said the gardaí didn't realise it was still recording and when it was handed back to the two women - it contained details of a conversation between the gardaí in the second patrol car.
A Shell to Sea spokesperson said the alleged remarks made by the gardaí were shocking and disturbing.

I think it's very difficult to say out loud.

It all depends on what was said. Was it two lads talking sh*te or two gardai planning on raping them? They're the two version that each side will tell.

But I can only assume the S2S crowd will release the full thing on the internet in an attempt to paint all gardai as monsters, though.

ye thats the video, These muppets are in charge of upholding the law. Their job is to catch rapists and there they are telling visitors to our country that they will rape them. I think he said it 4 times to her.

From what I understand and heard from the audio this camera was put in a seperate car with Gardaì who were taking the piss amongst themselves.

Unprofessional but nobody was told they were going to be raped.

"Gimme your name or I'll rape ya!" was what was said around the 13:30 mark in the video Caco posted. Wasn't said to the protestors but was said amongst only other Gardaì in the car.

    Storm in a teacup IMO.
It was not directed at nor sounded threatening.
No doubt more money will be wasted on this investigation...

He didn't say it to her. He said it in what should have been the privacy of the car as he didn't know it was being recorded. There were only other garda in the car. I know its very unprofessional but everyone has made stupid comments while working. Only difference here is he got recorded.

When you're wearing a Garda uniform, or when you're a teacher, a medical practitioner, a nurse or anyone who is in a position of power, you do not talk like that in any situation.

Even if they were just 'two lads talking sh*ite", it would still be pretty shocking. The fact that they were two gardai on duty means that it's completely unacceptable behaviour.

The other issue is that vulnerable people who have been victims of sexual assault have to rely on the Gardaí to be their first point of contact in a crisis and to deal with often very personal information and accounts of terrible situations. They also have to rely on them to bring prosecutions against their attackers and also to provide protection to victims.

What kind of twisted message does this "lads talking sh*ite" send out about the Gardaí. Do they find rape to be an amusing topic or something?!

Quite honestly, I think this should be dealt with directly by the Minister for Justice. It's that serious!

Also, this is the modern world, recording devices are tiny and should be assumed to be everywhere. You behave appropriately when you're on duty.

Stupid comments is one thing but saying you will rape someone when you are a Guard is another. Seems like they find rape very amusing.

Really interesting input. You should go ask the gardai that next time you see them.

He is clearly piss taking and wouldn't say it to her and wouldnt ACTUALLY do it either.

Having heard the tapes its very very clear that he is not being serious.

Having said that, they are still idiots.

As a culchie, i finally feel right in saying:

    BIG THICK CULCHIE GAURDS!

Regardless of the fact that they were joking, they are charged with protecting people and treating all with respect while wearing the uniform.

If that was Brian Cowen or Ivor callaly joking about they would be lynched by now.

    Did someone mention Lynching???

Why do we pay these slow, foolish, country folk almost the highest salaries in the world to be our police force?

But its not and to say a garda is in as elevated a position as the Taoiseach of the country is a stretch. They are Gardai and imo most gardai in this country are absolute idiots. And many of the younger Gardai don't even have leaving certificates so what calibre of Garda do you expect. This is nothing out of the ordinary for them.

The women weren't in the car at the time. Like it or not many gardai desensitise themselves to things like rape, murder etc.. It allows them to deal with these situations when they arise. They were joking in a personal conversation and weren't threatening anyone. If they get in trouble for blue humour recorded at a time when they had a reasonable expectation of privacy then you better be careful the next time you tell a risky joke.

I'm just glad they are not allowed to carry guns.

Completely unacceptable behaviour. How can people who have to deal with sexual assault victims on a regular basis make rape jokes?, I would be disgusted it non Gardai made those types of "jokes".

It doesnt matter how well educated they are,if they are in a position of power and come out with a statement like that they should be sacked.

probably the same reason we paid that Intelligentsia from drumcondra more than the USA president to bankrupt the country

They would have had no reason to complain had this not been recorded. So they were obviously treated well and in a professional manner. The two guards were joking and made a few silly comments.

It would be very very very different if the comments were made with the two women in the car.

Ridiculous if they get in trouble over that IMO.

And what has them being "country folk" got to do with anything? You do realise illiteracy and low levels of education are rampant in urban areas and not rural ones, no?

But sure, we make those jokes here all the time, and you can be sure that (example) a plumber making a house call today will have banter about a woman after they leave.

Why should these lads be any different?

They treated them well, apart from having a private joke, which unluckily for them was recorded.

Ridiculous to get in trouble for making comment when you think you are not being recorded?

    Andy Gray
    Richard Keyes
    Ron Atkinson

    etc, etc.......

They lost higher paid jobs that held a lower level of Authority.

Its a load of bollox, he said it laughing as a joke.
Still though, I support those protestants at Corrib. They should be treated better.
