Gutted as ITV2 is one of my favourite channels. Getting seriously fed up with UPC now. Contract is up in a month and I'll be getting the hell away from them! Have Sky at home in my parents house and have a hell of a lot more channels for about the same price. Major grrrrage!

Im fed up of UPC now, is it possibel to cancel my contract and move to Sky? Surely terms like this make a contract null and void!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 469 ✭✭ttcomet

@forzacalcio The UPC terms and conditions contain this line "Channel line-up is subject to change." So I am afraid this is not a valid reason to say they broke the contract.

How long are you with them? Once it goes past 12 months you can cancel without any penalty.

Boy am I glad I ditched them and spent my money on a Freesat HD PVR in Jan best €300 I ever spent :)

Not to sound like a UPC apologist or anythign but Bravo and Channel 1 are gone from everywhere, not just UPC. Sky bought the Living/Virgin group and got rid of some hannels (like those) and rebranded others (Living becomes Sky Living)

Oh I know that. But losing 6 channels from any platform within 3 months is a major downer.

UPC don't carry all the Living Group channels (though they do show the ones that advertise the channels we don't have!) which is annoying too.

Satellite isn't an option for us, but I can't help but be awfully jealous of my sister and her hundreds of channels. UPC channels are decreasing in number and their promised channels from last year haven't appeared so I have zero faith that the promised replacements for the ITV channels will turn up!

1st note - crap i must start buying d british tv guide. i had no idea the new series of hells kitchen was on itv2 yet and now i find i have missed most of it :(

anywho. i am gonna keep my freesat system alongside the upc, so i haven't lost the channels. i know that is no comfort to anyone who has, but you could get a cheap freesat box somewhere like lidl, and connect it to a dvd recorder for recordings. sorted.

altho it is a b!tch that the channels are gone with next to no warning

Do you have to have a freesat dish in order to get it or is the box enough?

You need a dish-the clue is in the name 'FreeSat':)

No such thing as a freesat dish-just a satellite dish-Xtravision are even selling satellite systems now for relatively small money-Avoid LIDL systems, dishes are rubbish.
Check the satellite forum for info on installers and help.

Not a good day for UPC - In Jan 2010 ITV 2,3&4 where launched with much fanfare and talk of a 2 year deal !

Has anyone got confirmation of who this other Irish channel provider with exclusivity is ?

As for other channels - there are not many others of any quality out there and since they don't even carry UPC group owned channels (eg CBS) and MGM HD has being coming soon for 6 months at this stage - I won't expect anything new anytime soon

So price increase and 6 channels down already this year......

It's the channels that are providing the programming rather than a broadcaster. Basically TV3/3e are a region of ITV (largely owned by same parent company) and by showing programmes on both channels it was driving viewer figures down on TV3 meaning they were becoming less attractive to advertisers. By switching off the extra channels it means that people don't have a choice.

Wasn't being smartassed with my reply-it's just that a lot of people who use cable have little or no knowledge of satellite tv but are now getting into it as UPC continue to raise prices and are now cutting channels.
If the main channels you watch are the likes of ITV,BBC,CH4 etc. then freesat/fta is the way to go,no more bills either.

That's not true. TV3 have bought the rights to show some ITV shows in Ireland. Other than that, they have no other involvement.

ITV used to have a 45% shareholding in TV3...don't remember them selling it off?

if your any way handy just buy a freesat kit for around 70e, Read installation manual, if you have any problems just ask for help . You will have your channels back plus a lot more for FREE.

It has been owned by a venture capital firm (Doughty Hanson & Co) for some years.

Totally pissed at this news

ITV4 had the whole British Touring Car Championships and now gone, plus always watched plenty of movies on those channels too.

6 channels in a couple of months, and they also said my broadband would increase, my arse it did, exact same speed as before.

    I'm raging

Not happy with this! Loved ITV2!

Live in an apartment so can't get a dish, so stuck with UPC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,041 ✭✭✭JDxtra

It's a huge loss to UPC, as they were popular channels. There's not much out there they can replace them with though.

Are you sure that would have been available via the UPC ITV4 feed? Most live sports events broadcast on ITV4 were blocked by UPC and they just showed a blank screen, there was usually a message on the info screen saying that it couldn't be shown in the ROI.

Well, I'm not sure to be honest, as we've only had UPC digital here a few months so I don't know whether the BTCC would have been available to view or not but I was hoping it would be. Guess I'll never know now, though! :(

A combination Freesat/Saorview setup is looking much more attractive now but I suppose the remainder of the UPC contract will have to be seen out first otherwise cancellation fees or something like that will still have to be paid, I suppose.

Rang UPC now when I discovered that ITV2, 3 + 4 were "no longer available". They said that their contact ended 31/3 and that an Irish channel has taken them over. I don't know what that means. Anyway, I told them that my monthly payment was very poor value for money. I can get 4 packs from Sky for what I am paying UPC at the moment with loads of channels. UPC can't possibly complete. As regards the person who wrote in who lives in an apartment. I can't see why an areal can't be put up on roof. I feel there is no competition and that the management of many apartments have exclusivity deals with UPC.

Again, there's not much they can do about stations closing. Don't think the other channels should muddy the ITV waters (as that complain can stand out on its own IMO)

There is no point, I am renting and I doubt 1) that the landlord would allow a dish and 2) I won't be here forever so would be wasting my money..

    Thanks though :)

It seems to be a TV3 issue. TV3 have rights for programming that airs on each of the ITV channels 2, 3 and 4. UTV is exempt as they are required to be carried by UPC and any TV service provider.

It is likely that TV3 and ITV have signed a contract which removes the channels from UPC.

TV3 was sold by Canwest and ITV in 2006. TV3 agreed a licencing deal with ITV until 2013 on the sales of that channel to Dogherty Hanson. TV3 bought Channel 6 in 2009 and renamed it 3e effectively becoming their answer to ITV2.

Have to say I won't miss the channels that much, UPC will prob return their own channels such as CBS Drama as they were lost when UPC took on ITV set of channels.

Also UTV is a seprate channel to ITV the hold they the CHANNEL 3 franchise in Northern Ireland while STV holds it in Scotland. ITV hold the remaining Channel 3 licences in England and Wales.

It is also worth pointing out that ITV 2, 3 and 4 are available via satellite for free, while both TV3 and 3e are available for free on Soarview.

TV3, and their VC owners threatened ITV somewhat as I understand it. I find their timing is silly, they should have tried to carry ITV2 and 3 themselves ( especially) on a single mux with TV3 post ASO in late 2012/early 2013 and rebrand e3 as TV3 Americas or something. To do so they should have let them run another two years....so maybe they are eating into TV3 viewing figures :)

As ITV cannot tailor ads on these channels for the Irish market they backed down. ITV2 3 and 4 each have as high a weekly 'reach' as SKY1 in the UK ( where fewer households subscrive to sky as a % of households) and
