If you're going to Thailand it had better be for the hookers cos a month's training anywhere would be as good.

It was more of an observation, tbh.

It's gonna be for the experience... I never did a J1 in college so I want to get away and experience another culture. And if I can combine that with a sh*t load of training in a hot country... all the better.

I plan on taking a couple of months off pretty much everything once my contract with work is finished and just chilling out. So a month in Thailand, and a month rolling 2x a day in IP?

If you do your month in IP in the summer you'll have:

    Me
    Foxy
    Shafty
    Anesh
    Rohan
    Neil
    Treebeard
    Hughie
    Conor
    Lukasz

All there with you in the mornings if it's anything like last summer. Me, Shafty, Anesh and Rohan there all the time, the other lads work shift or slop about like students. Wanna **** up your ears good and proper then that's the way to go.

Yeah it kinda depends on what I end up doing work wise, but if I can find some schmucks stupid enough to give me money to train them then that could work.... :)

Didn't want to derail other thread further. Best of luck with personal training! Brave move.

Coming to end of a solicitors training contract myself. Seriously long slog!

Extremely random, but just occurred to me other day seeing a pic of you that you kinda look like someone I was in Irish college with way back in day. Can't remember name of it though to ask you.

I think it's kind of 'safe' at the moment because I'll just have it as something to do on the side, if i can get people - super, if not, I've accounting as a 9- 5'er anyway (and by 5, I mean 7 and after).

Expect lots of requests for people to whore me out when I get going :)

Only Irish college thing I ever did was in St. Pats in Dublin - never did the gaeltach stuff. So if you were there, it coulda been me!

    <<Screaming yeah, yeah, yeah...>>

    WCB

    -General 10 minute warm up
    -Foot stands x2 rounds
    -Straight arm push x2 rounds
    -Slipping and rolling x ages
    -Body sparring x6 rounds
-Bag work: 1-2, 1-2-slip-2, mixed it up a bit w/ jab, straight, slip, straight, left hook
    -Ab circuit

Horrible day... on the go with work since 8am, lecture from 1.30pm to 5.30pm, back at my desk til 7.45pm, WCB til 9.30pm, Home-eat-shower, back in town for 10.30pm for my best mates birthday, just home now. Vom.

Boxing was good. I'm letting people whack off combinations was too easily. I'm telling myself it's because there's 4 groups in the ring with no room to move, when really my issue is I'm just not moving and boxing my way out of trouble.

Worked on stepping into the 'square' beside people more today and was picking off right hooks to the body constantly. Stepping to the left wasn't working as well cos I couldn't come in high for head shots but moving around felt good. Gonna work hard now on being super light on my feet and just bouncing around.

Being dumped in Tipperary with work for like two 1/2 weeks and a full week in April which f*cking SUCKS. The hotel better have a gym. As far as I know I'll be down for the Thursday and Friday before the IP No-gi tournament which sucks hard, but at lest I'll only miss a couple of days training for it. Less than 3 weeks til that now - starting to get excited.

Spar, roll and condition tomorrow... whoop!

<<I'm on the practice field running two-a-days....>>

    Warm Up

1 half hearted attempt at the IP warm up

    Bag rounds - 3x 3 minute rounds w/ 1 minute rest

    BJJ

    "T3I!<!<3R5 - 70ish minutes
    -warm ups
-kneeling guard passes - same as Monday accept keep the elbow tucked, knee comes thru to pin leg, go to side control.... or something along those lines
-when a guy goes to jump guard and bear hugs you, flick elbows out to make space, one hand on hip, one on knee, push on the knee to break, he goes to matt, use that guard pss above
-few drills of the above stuff
    -few light rolls for position

    R0LL1|\|4 - I dunno... like 7/8x 5 minute rounds?
-got my kimura from guard that Barry showed me on Monday... delighted with that
-pulled a few arm bars again... I need to tighten up my S-mount a lot tho
-took a few guys backs nicely
-defended decently against Shane, just need to widen my knees out when going for spider guard, two sleeves (instead of collar and sleeve) and one foot on the bicep seems to work well when the guy's on the ground
-really nice roll with Grant... swept him from scarf hold ala last weeks class, swept him with some form of butterfly hooks, he swept me straight back, ended up sitting on my hips w/ no base so I just grabbed the back of his jacket and swept him backwards
-I need to figure out how Conor keeps sweeping me when I'm in his half guard or mount.... he's the only one doing it
-School boy swept'd a couple of times, used the left heel grab and right foot to left hip push/pull sweep LOADS tonight

    Random stuff...
-north/south choke from side control... reach around head, drop shoulder, ribs and hip towards the mats to stop his head turning back towards me, sprawl, head goes to the mat and try to go under dude's shoulder to lift it up and then walk myself back and around
-Shane's snakey side control/scarf hold crank-choke..... from reg side control/scarf hold grab the back of dude's collar flex the arm to push his head off centre and then step across his head and use around your Achilles/calf to pull his head back and choke against your forearm - miss it and no big deal cos you still have the scarf hold
-baseball choke too, either using gi or hands for no gi... that was a super simple one to do from side control
-nice arm bar set up from guard... if he gets slack with his elbows, deep underhook, pull his arm down and pin between your head and shoulder, hip out towards that sides hand, knee on shoulder, pinch them and push the arm down

    Squares

    -1x disappointing performance

    Good sesh tonight...

The bag work at the start was ok. I think. Was bopping about a bit more today... in and out, trying to create angles... dunno how well it'll work with a real person tho :/

Happy out with the BJJ. Feeling slightly more competent each class. Rolled really soft tonight. Pretty much just kept pulling guard and trying to prevent myself from being passed. Only really attacked if I swept the guy using a school boy sweep, something from spider guard or that heel grab/hip kick sweep (just realised I was doing that and throwing a butterfly hook into the other leg the odd time too).

Grant told me I was getting good. That was nice.

Recently I've been rolling a lot with the lighter guys and working on my sweeps, passes and submissions from there and just trying to survive with guys heavier than me. The way it seems to be distributed in IP is that most guys are <80kg or >105kg and I'm stuck right in the middle at 92kg as of today. I think I need to get more aggressive wit the heavier guys and start to attack and go for subs. If I get smashed, I get smashed!!

    Squares was awful. Shocking performance.

Agreed... I should have July and August off work to study for my a/c finals so hopefully I'll get some additional mat time in the form of a couple of two a days in then...

Might even get a chance to learn how to hit people.

Yesterday.... knew I was tired and need a break. Got home from work at 7.30pm. Decided to have a quick nap before getting down to some study. Woke up at 4am.

    197226_1784325021642_1644993985_1681806_1687421_n.jpg

    BJJ

Did about 40 mintues of technique work going over everything we did this week...

Rolling was 4 minute rounds. Rolled with Will, Tom, Amanda and Aaron, then Will, Will, Will, Will and Will

First roll with Will was tough as always, spent more of the time defending with differing levels of success.

Spent the majority of my time with Tom trying to avoid being teabagged from north/south. Actually managed to survive pretty well which I was fairly happy with. He tried to north/south me and in learning the sub on Wednesday, I also learned how to defend against it, so I just turned my head into him.

After my first couple of rolls I was wiped from getting smashed so pulled guard on Amanda and just lay there for a while recovering. Tried to pull a few kimuras from guard on her but she defended by getting her arm behind her back and linking hands. I'll be remembering that for anytime I get caught. I'd imagine I didn't have her wrist locked down the right way and that's why she was able to do it.

I rolled well with Aaron... best part of it was pulling off a north/south choke after drilling the sh*t out of it on Wednesday. Delighted with that. Worst part about it was smashing him in the face with my elbow trying to pull another kimura from guard.

Then Barry told me to roll with Will again. And 20 minutes later I was still rolling with him. First time he's rolled moderately hard with me and I have to say it f*cking sucked. I was getting smashed all over the place. Got mounted and knee on belly'd so many times that I ended up over the bin up-chucking my water. I had a serious lumpy burp on Wednesday that I swallowed back down too. Guess I'm rolling a bit harder too...

Anyway as much as it f*cking sucked getting smashed over and over again I think it's one of the best rolls I've had from a learning point of view cos I was getting nothing for free. A quick note on things I picked up...

-From Z-guard, underhook top leg and smash shoulder mid way between knee and hip to push leg to mat, walk to your based side first to free leg and then come back around

-From S-mount frame with my elbow inside the posted foot and shrimp BACK towards the other side to create space to get a knee in (I had been trying to shrimp up)

-In S-mount, get my knee right up behind his head, keep my posted foot active to prevent him opening space up with his hip, underhook top arm and push/pull w/ head to control

-There was loads of other little detailed crap but it's stuff that I think I'll probably end up just 'doing' without thinking too much about now

I'm actually ridiculously sore everywhere already. Nigs.

    91.4kg after training tonight too.

    <<Fast women and cheap drinks...>>

    Bag rounds - 3x 3 minutes w/ 1 minute recovery

    Team Conditioning

    Block 1 - 15 minutes(ish)
5 man team, 60kg prowler, up and down til time runs out

    Block 2 - 15 minutes
2 man team... your rest if your partners time
    -24kg KB, 4 row e/s, 8 squats, 4 presses e/s
Think I got like 8 rounds

    Block 3
Half spider race- 5 left, 5 right
5 man team, your rest is the other 4 dudes time

    Block 4 - 15 minutes
2 man team, go in sync
    -10 T-push ups, 10 tuck jumps, 10 partner rows

Grand little sesh this morning. Not too hard. EVerything was manageable. Last block was the worst. No rolling cos of a stupid exam.

In Tipperary with work April 7th and 8th, IP no-gi comp on the 9th... so maybe the 6th?

You just want me to test to see how weak I've gotten right?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,981 ✭✭✭✭Hanley

At one of the lads behest, I'd a quick look thru my log to see how many hours of training I've put in since starting my fighting journey...

BJJ: 52 hours (13 hours in January, 17 hours in February and 22 hours in March)
Striking: 26 hours (9 in Jan, 6 in Feb, 11 in Mar)

Ok so it's no real surprise why my BJJ is progressing faster than my striking looking at those numbers. I don't think I want to do less BJJ, just more striking :p

Hopefully cram another 8 hours of training in this week and get a full 'week'/40 hours of training for March.

    <<All of the lights..>>

    Boxing
    8x 90 second rounds w/ 45 second recovery

Felt alright today. Got smashed a few times in the face badly enough but just took it and kept going. Slowly but surely geting used to being tagged. Movement was a bit better. Starting to notice tendancies and stuff mid round so hopefully that'll continue w/ new guys. John could pretty much smash me at any point he likes, but it's nice having a moving target to hit.

    BJJ

    Tekke(n)((rs)) - 45ish minutes
-warm up and then drills from side control
-partnered up with Bruno for this, Barry had been talking about rolling 'technical' during the week and he was the right guy to pair up with to see it, a lot of what he does seems effortless, I was conscious of not squeezing too much or trying to smash at any point cos I know his back's at him, so was a good warm up for taking it easy on Barry later too...
-Side control drill was mostly about pressing into the near side of his ribcage and underhooking the far arm and head and amost elevating the elbows off the mat to lift his head and put him in a nasty position
-Guillotines from there.... if he rolls in reach around and as you chin strap step thru, link hands and twist your wrist.
-If he rolls to his knees use like a reverse short choke forearm position to stop him popping his head out, swing a leg over his back to prevent the roll if needs be
-If he tries to roll to his back, step over w/ hands still locked into mount, post with head and get up on toes, twist
-Picked up a few other tips from Bruno bout just controlling guys from that position with minimal effort

    Rolling - like 8x 5 minute rounds w/ 1 minute recovery?
-Nothing extreme or outrageous to report, just chipping away and trying to use some positional control today
-Scarf hold is rapidly becoming my favourite position. Seems to be fairly easy and relatively 'safe' in regards being swept from it. Can be locked in quite tight without any major stress to hold it, can do sh*t all from there at the mo.... but hey I'll learn
-The roll with Tom was good today.... defended a bit better, gave up my left arm cheap AGAIN but its something I'm doing less of
-Think TJ only tapped me 2 or 3x in 5 minutes... which is definite progress. He was owning me all over the shop, but even if I couldn't defend, I had an idea on what I SHOULD be doing
-Traded guillotine and ankle lock attempts with Grant for a round, rolled out of a side ride and just played about with some stuff
-Then spent a round ankle locking, and being ankle locked by Will and his shiny legs

-Rolled w/ Barry for about 25 minutes afterwards in lieu of conditioning. Just doing like really light, smooth and controlled stuff. It was more technical and flowy and in my head it works as 'get the right position, or move to the right spot and you won't have to exert any significant force in doing so'. That is, no muscling, strength or going hard at all. Hopefully I got it!
-Lots done on just keeping elbow position to prevent under hooks while on the bottom
-One big take away was when mount, frame hard with arm across hips and other arms elbow to the mat inside his knee and keep framing hard while shrimping big to get out and prevent S-mount
-My shrimps and bridges are quite short and small movements, going to work on making them bigger, more explosive and w/ longer travel on Wednesday

Great session tonight. Didn't get any conditioning in cos I spent 2.5 hours on the mat and over 15 minutes in the ring, but the stuff I got done today will be more advantageous in the long run than 10 minutes of sprint blocks!!

    <<I’m on it…>>

    TUESDAY

    Muay Thai
    Teckneecuh
-using right hand to paw away jabs
-left hand to paw away rights (meet it a bit further out cos it’s more powerful)
-lifting shoulder and elbow to cup ear for hooks

    Padwork
-6x 3 minute rounds holding pads
    -6x 3 minute rounds striking

    Sparring – 4x 3 minute rounds
    -boxed for all rounds
-got beaten up for all rounds
-snapping out jabs too much for no reason (ie not hitting anything)
    -head movement’s not existent
-got spinning back fisted by Dylan
-Paddy was showing me a method to slip jabs (lean back to right leg, rotate slightly to right lifting up right shoulder (gives something for a straight right hand to bounce off) and them coming flying back with a straight right to knock the guy out)…

I actually got some great advice off Paddy too… ‘Be a c*nt, just get in there and ruin his day’. Basically because I’m a shorty I’ll need to get close where technique and skill won’t come in to it as much.

    WEDNESDAY

    BJJ
Warm ups and guillotine technique with Deputy Admiral Grant, same as Monday.

Did the drilling with Chief Tom and picked up some good tips on how to lock it in more effectively.

Quarter-master General Bruno schooled us on some single and double leg take downs which I’m going to need to start working on if I’m gonna fight MMA. I was trying to be all fancy and technical and getting nowhere, but once I just started going for it I was having much more success.

Rolled for ages just going thru various stuff with the blue belts. Lukaz, who’s name I DEFINITELY spelled wrong, showed me how annoying it is using head control when a guy’s trying to pass. Basically just making sure their head and body remain on the same side and using it to control them.

Bruno spent yonks helping me refine spider guard and just showing me the importance of keeping straight leg control.

I felt absolutely thick after all of that because I got so completely schooled. I don’t like the gi again.

    Weight on 29/3/11 – 91.4kg and 92mm

Decent start. Targeting 85mm and 90kg for the IP nogi comp on 9/4/11. Won’t have any effect on my weight class, but I just want to have a goal to work towards.

I’d like to be 70something mm for my WCB fight on April 23rd and absolutely ripped to shreds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 890 ✭✭✭dartstothesea

If I recall the previous mm's correctly, that's awesome progress. I remember feeling a nice bit leaner doing MT last year, so just out of vanity I'm looking forward to doing more haha.

Not being as tall as the other lad can be so frustrating (just 'cause I wasn't able to get in there like I should've). I guess there'll be tall mother****s in your weight class and all.

<<Baby when the lights go out…>>

    Strength:
    Hang power cleans:
    40kg 3x2
    60kg x3
    70kg x3
    80kg x2
    90kg x2
    100kg 2x1

    Power Cleans:
    60kg x3
    80kg x2
    90kg x2
    100kg 3x2
    105kg 2x1

    Conditioning:
    Prowler:
    160kg 10 trips in 10 minutes

    MMA:
Warm up, takeneek and pad work – 80 minutes (jabs, rights and 1-2s)

    Sparring:
    3x 3 minute boxing rounds
3x 3 minute muay thai rounds
    2x 5 minute MMA rounds

    Conditioning:
Prowler fight rounds w/ bodyweight (90kg):
    3 minutes on, 1 minute off x3
    a) Long strides, walking w/ prowler
    b) Up the pace a bit w/ prowler
    c) Sprints w/ prowler

Yeah… that was a good session.

Power cleans – man I’m weak. These were absolutely crap. All over the place and so slow. No extension, slow elbows, everything wrong!! The 160kg prowler was easy. First time with any real weight on it at all recently so happy out with how it went.

The pad work was good… need to follow my jabs more and throw from my face(elbows high) and twist with my hand as I hit. Moving in and out and side to side/slipping is still a serious work in progress, but I’m just trying to improve each day.

Sparring was great craic. Robbed one of the lads head guards to protect my face a bit and it did a good job. Got absolutely thumped a few times anyway but c’est la vie. I don’t know if the lads were taking it easy on me, or were tired, but the muay thai sparring seemed to be a bit slower paced than the boxing. MMA was quality, loved it. Put this weeks training to use and guillotine Conor, pulled off a north/south and rear naked choke too… Good fun!

Oh and in other news…. 89.9kg after training bitches!!!!. Lightest I’ve been since like April 2007 
