Why would you not fill it out? I mean do you have a real and sensible reason for avoiding doing rather then just to 'mess with the man'?

I'm Irish , I just don't want to partake in the census.

Perhaps the census form should include a tickbox for 'Meh, apathy'.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

First off... you are afraid of giving them too much info...

which is basically just "name, address, job, religion, age, how many dependancies..."

Then you say you just couldn't be arsed?

    Get out of that nonsense...

Just say you were somewhere else and listed on a different households form. Easy. :)

This AH response is something I expected.

All you "I'm not fillin it out cause I'm awkward...etc"
When you apply for a driving license or passport of the government do you say, ak sure I'm not fillin that out?... No you don't.

Besides some of yee are militant in the fact you won't fill it out but going by maturity your mams will fill it in without you knowing :P

Also think of the people that actually go door to door trying to earn a few pound, its not ethical to make their lives a misery just because you don't have the maturity to understand the logic behind the census.

You will become an nonentity if you don't fill it out. Everywhere you go in Ireland you will be ignored. You will stand thirsty at the bar shouting for a pint, but you will not be heard while everyone around you is being served. You will walk up to the counter in the shop to pay for your newspaper only for the cashier to stare into space while picking her nose. You will queue for your dole only for the shutter to get pulled down once you reach the window.

Don't let it be you... fill out the damn form!

I understand the logic perfectly well , I'm not militant , possibly awkward , I'm just curious about the ramifications of not doing the census

Ah, that was because of the census? I couldn't make out why that kept happening last time I was over.

Won't somebody think of the children!

in 100 years when your great great great grandchildren are googling the 2011 census the won't find you if you changed your name or didn't partake!

i suggest having more fun, put information in it along that will freak them out :D

sure they change the information that you put in anyway to suit their purposes...

working in data input for census one year, we were told that travellers couldn't have the religion as protestant, it could only be catholic, eventually after a letter from a travellers organisation the religions were reverted back to what people filled on the form...

Also women couldn't give birth to more than 21 children.

And the rents people paid had to be amended to fit their rules.

What about the men? ...Oh, wait, the census specifically tells us not to fill that section out. BLATANT DISCRIMINATION

It's also an amazing historical record for future generations. *archivist hat*
Looking up all my relatives on the census has been so interesting. I can't wait til 100 years time when some great grandchild realises nanny was a pre-martial co-habiting hussy :-)

Everyone subject to the census, that is to say of twenty years and over, will pay the sum set aside for Yahweh.

So the census is used for planning. Like the way the last government used the information to help their developer mates to build a load of houses that nobody needed - 120,000 of them empty. All owned by NAMA now which we are paying for. The census crowd can fcuk right off from me. The government will use the information badly, FCUK UP, and send us the bill. They'll have to lick my arse for that census form from me.
You do realise that there is a new government from today?

Also, its rather bad form to associate this with the last government. The statistics can be used to hold governments to account.

To answer the OP: of course you don't have to do it. The question is whether you'll accept the consequences of not doing it. The penalties under the Statistics Act 1993:
    44.—
    (1) A person guilty of an offence under any provision of this Act shall be liable—
    (a) on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £1,000, or
    (b) on conviction on indictment, to a fine not exceeding £20,000.
    (2) Where a person is convicted of an offence under section 36 of this Act he shall, if the contravention continues after conviction, be guilty of an offence on every day on which it continues and for each such offence he shall be liable—
    (a) on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £50, or
    (b) on conviction on indictment to a fine not exceeding £1,000.
Section 36 covers the failure to produce requested information. So if you think 10 minutes of your time is worth £1000 plus £50 per day thereafter, throw the form in the bin

Not that I know of. Here's a link to the 2002 Enumerators' Handbook (PDF). Enumerators are told to inform people that it is legally compulsory to participate. If they are asked if anyone's ever been prosecuted, they're supposed to say:
The co-operation of the public in Irish censuses has always been excellent. The census is completely dependent on this traditional high level of public co-operation. The CSO is fully confident that the public will participate equally co-operatively on this occasion.
and that it's a matter for the State Solicitor's Office

What year was that? The 2002 and 2006 censuses have the data about Travellers religion.
