I don't feel like giving all that data to the government , If I don't answer the door and avoid the enumerator will they keep coming back looking for it to be filled out?

    http://www.cso.ie/census/Ques_about_census.htm

The next census will take place on the night of Sunday April 10, 2011 and will count all the people and households in the country on that night.

Why do we have a Census?
The census results are essential tools which are needed for effective policy, planning and decision making purposes. At national level current population statistics are necessary for planning the provision of health care, education, employment, etc.
Regional figures are critical for determining regional policy and for the operation of regional authorities (e.g. Health Boards). The greatest strength of the census is the provision of detailed population figures at local level. These help to identify likely demand for schools and hospitals, areas of relatively high unemployment, the best location for new shops, etc.

    Is it Compulsory?
Yes. Everybody present in the country on Census Night must be included. This is the law.

Don't worry, Mr. Gummer, if any of those enumerators try to reach you a graboid'll probably eat them first.

Have my doubts that anyone is going to be charged with not filling out a census form.
Also, it's kind of hilarious that they say on their site 'It's the law.' rather than actually link to the specific law.

You can always just bs a bit in it. I really can't see them taking you to court unless you completely take the piss i.e.

    Occupation: Ruler Of All
    etc.

(Tho that is very tempting to write down :) )

Census data is used to plan things like schools, local amenities, public transport, traffic planning and policing. It is used by many organisations and bodies, not just the government.

If transport planning types discover an area where a load of people need to leave the house at 7 and there is no bus till 8, they may revise their timetable.

If an area has a load of young married couples, and young children there is an need to plan local schools to have capacity.

The more people fill it out the more accurate it is. The data is aggregated - so the evil government doesn't use it to collect personal information Shure they have all that already from the revenue, mobile phone use, credit card and Internet data.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,261 ✭✭✭Sonics2k

The Government already has most of your information anyway.

All the census is really used for is Area Development, so Schools, roads etc.

Fill out the form, it only takes 30 minutes and you can do it while watching some T.V.

Have you seen the state of the Irish air corps lately?
They would have to fly a civillian helicopter up and shoot you down with home-made darts!

You could fly your balloon over leinster house and sh1t on their cars and theres not a lot they could do to you!

OP Travel up here or across the water for a day. Our census is in late March. Was toying with the idea of buggering off down South for a couple of days myself but I think Ill leave it until the Royal wedding.

    LOL
If one is predisposed to a conviction (well founded or otherwise) that the Government is "evil" why would they take them at their word on this ?

I suppose one could test it out by putting "Drug dealer" down for occupation. :D
If an area has a load of young married couples, and young children there is an need to plan local schools to have capacity..
Young Married couples have to go to school now ?
If transport planning types discover an area where a load of people need to leave the house at 7 and there is no bus till 8, they may revise their timetable..

Thats the theory but in reality I wouldnt be so sure. A local government minister might do more for amenities, public transport etc than all the census figures in the world

Why would you not fill it out? I mean do you have a real and sensible reason for avoiding doing rather then just to 'mess with the man'?

So the census is used for planning. Like the way the last government used the information to help their developer mates to build a load of houses that nobody needed - 120,000 of them empty. All owned by NAMA now which we are paying for. The census crowd can fcuk right off from me. The government will use the information badly, FCUK UP, and send us the bill. This AH response is something I expected.

All you "I'm not fillin it out cause I'm awkward...etc"
When you apply for a driving license or passport of the government do you say, ak sure I'm not fillin that out?... No you don't.

Besides some of yee are militant in the fact you won't fill it out but going by maturity your mams will fill it in without you knowing :P

Also think of the people that actually go door to door trying to earn a few pound, its not ethical to make their lives a misery just because you don't have the maturity to understand the logic behind the census.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

You will become an nonentity if you don't fill it out. Everywhere you go in Ireland you will be ignored. You will stand thirsty at the bar shouting for a pint, but you will not be heard while everyone around you is being served. You will walk up to the counter in the shop to pay for your newspaper only for the cashier to stare into space while picking her nose. You will queue for your dole only for the shutter to get pulled down once you reach the window.

Don't let it be you... fill out the damn form!

Won't somebody think of the children!

in 100 years when your great great great grandchildren are googling the 2011 census the won't find you if you changed your name or didn't partake!

i suggest having more fun, put information in it along that will freak them out :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 109 ✭✭chickenchaser

sure they change the information that you put in anyway to suit their purposes...

working in data input for census one year, we were told that travellers couldn't have the religion as protestant, it could only be catholic, eventually after a letter from a travellers organisation the religions were reverted back to what people filled on the form...

Also women couldn't give birth to more than 21 children.

And the rents people paid had to be amended to fit their rules.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,345 ✭✭✭Dunjohn

Also women couldn't give birth to more than 21 children.

What about the men? ...Oh, wait, the census specifically tells us not to fill that section out. BLATANT DISCRIMINATION

It's also an amazing historical record for future generations. *archivist hat*
Looking up all my relatives on the census has been so interesting. I can't wait til 100 years time when some great grandchild realises nanny was a pre-martial co-habiting hussy :-)

You do realise that there is a new government from today?

Also, its rather bad form to associate this with the last government. The statistics can be used to hold governments to account.
