I think Bryan Dobson's remarks about the Robot Marathon in Osaka, Japan is more likely to cause a major international incident tbh. After reporting on the event he commented "I can't think of anything I'd rather not do than that!"

Japan will obviously be outraged by Dobson's flamboyant remarks about one of their most cherished annual events and will demand an apology while pointing all nuclear weapons available to 53° 19' 16" North, 6° 12' 55" West (Donnybrook, Dublin).

Thank god I built that bomb shelter last week!

they don't have weapons of mass destruction,

only good old weapons of conventional destruction (a lot of which were sold to them by the west),

which are still pretty good at killing a **** load of people.

That happened because all the major world powers had signed treaties to back up particular countries in case of a war. So if two mickey mouse countries have a scrap over some regional issue then before you know it superpowers are fighting each other over something that essentially had nothing to do with them.

Not so sure if countries subscribe to alliance treaties today or even who is one which side. I suppose Israel would be ground zero if such a thing was to happen today and it'd be the West against the Arabs+Middle East. Which side would China and Russia be on cos they'd be big players and no doubt. Stay tuned.

Lads whats happening in the arab world is what happened in the 60's in the western. Just different parts of the world and cultures experiencing it at different times.Kinda like how china is and many asian countrys are going through their industrial revolutions now.

And lads World war one didnt just kick off as of Franz Ferdinand being shot.
There was already huge tensions built before hand and war was inevitable.The main reason following this is because at one stage following the assassination reserves from once side were being transported up a boarder river and troops from the other side began to open fire on them as they thought it was an invasion force.

The larger countries joined in as of a series of treaties etc.

The sovereign defaults that were delayed for the past couple of years, will almost certainly happen this year if oil and food prices continue going north, or even if they don't fall back.

Just how much "demand destruction" can the world create, before the financial sector decide it's time to change the model. Will they wait for China to "pop" first.

I agree, all our anger about wage/social welfare cuts and higher taxation to pay for the bank bailout may pale into insignifigance as prices, esp oil, spiral due to upheaval in the middle east. If Saudi Arabia falls then its big trouble as they are huge suppliers to the west's oil needs.
Libyan opposition fighters were on sky news today condemning the west for its inaction against the slaughter unleashed by Gadaffi's thugs, and see the west as only interested in their oil. I believe that a major ideological conflict is looming and Iran's president may kick something off with Israel to diffuse dissent internally by focusing the population against a common foe.
Our dependence on oil must be downgraded and fast, electric cars and safe cheap electricity is our only hope to keep the train a rollin'
Ireland is smothering its future by a burden of debts that we can only pay if our economy jumps off the floor and starts running very fast, which sadly I don't see happening.

I am very pessimistic about the next few years and I think that the world will be a much more dangerous place very soon for all.

Great saying! As for WW3, I can't see anything of the sort being sparked by localised revolutions in Africa/Mid East. A world war will only occur when you've got two "superpowers" on different sides of a conflict. IMO Gaddafi is much more resilient than Mubarak and it may very well take aggressive action to depose him, but nothing to the extent of world wars or nuclear stand offs. It will more than likely be an internal plot worked by defected and aggrieved soldiers. Surely he can't extend his reign much longer right? As for Saudi Arabia, that could prove more problematic, but the majority of protests here are low key to say the least.

We've had upheavel of far greater consequence in the past. This is just stirring the pot in a tiny theatre in the geo-political sense.

Look at the spring riots of 1967. Look at the fall of communism. every so often there is a seismic shift in political establishment. When it happens in the west we can take note. Tin pot ****holes like Yemen and Tunisia and even Lybia are inconsequential. Hell only that **** loads of westerners go to Egypt it too would be relatively inconsequential.

The only way I see WW3 starting is if China and the USA get a little paranoid.
With 1 billion people in China still under communist rule I can see a revolution coming some time in the near future since history tends to repeat itself and countries like China are still under communist rule even after their so called revolution of 1949 between communists....and communists. If once charismatic person decides they want something other than communism then imagine the people who agree with him since there are 1 billion people there. Which will lead to civil unrest, then economic problems for the whole world, and finally war.

Thats just the way I think it will go.

I cant see world war 3 happening, there is tensions in some small countries but not the main world superpowers, only country I could see causing riot in years down the line is Russia under new leadership

Your actually listening to those clowns, their recent track record in predicting anything has been poor at best. While this Rosenberg fella may be a bit of a chicken little thats not to say that his concerns are completely unjustified.

A WW3 thread and not one mention of the mad elephant in the room - what about North Korea peoples? That guy is madder than Mad Frankie Frasier, and he (by his own admission) is "mad as a lorry".
L'il Kim is fond of the aul postering in a mad attempt to bring 'the other side' to the table for talks. His philosophy seems to be one of I'll scare the fúckers into having a chat. Now who is to say that one day he might just go that little bit too far and before you know it - we're all look back to the economc crisis with fond memories!!

My initial thoughts were that all the current unrest and revolutions could inspire other oppressed people to do the same and as mentioned above this could happen in N. Korea (though how they would hear about world events I dont know) and China and others.

On another note I wonder IF war came to Ireland on a large scale what would happen? As an island we are pretty open. I reckon we'd all hide in the bog and in the hills and it'd be a bit like the old days flying columns(?) craic

I wouldn't expect an allout World War 3 - but I would expect a new cold war like scenario between the West and new Muslim extrememists governments.

This scenario if develops would be very unpredictable and higly volatile as the West is heavily dependend on the Middle East, and extemists in power will have access to more and more deadly weapons, funds and resources (people).

If protests gains momentum in North Korea, millions would be masscred. And China will be compelled to 'scold' them, and eventually arm twisted into interfering with the NorthKorean dictator setup, which in turn will trigger change in China - which could go ape-****, but Chinese are getting rich and probably complacent, and it will resolved less violantly, and result in more transparency there - but would also hit West a bit by more expensive manufacturing imports. West is going to come off a bit worse in this all, but not as bad as the third world nations though. They are really screwed.
