Yep something I sometimes do which can take the sting out of a witty or humourous reply by me, making it seem like I'm all serious when in fact I'm just being careful about wording , some peoples feelings and not to come across as being silly .

For instance I was in two minds the other day weather to use the word 'Gypo ' or Gypsy ' to describe a group of people but in the end didn't use any of those words. Novella puts it so well below

Secondly, I think it's important to be more careful, I suppose, when expressing opinions or making jokes to people you don't know for the very fact that you don't know them, so it's harder to judge a response and you just cannot know what might offend.

    So, no.
Nail on head .Nothing worse than somebody misunderstanding or taking your words out of context even though you (and maybe they) know you were not implying anything ,when any offense is unintentional

I'm less sweary and rude on here than in real life, unless I'm around the family - then I wouldn't say a thing.

    I'm nearly the same.

Constantly trying to nail the funny response, and usually failing miserably and not getting a laugh :(

However, in real life, I'm ALWAYS right. Not one person has managed to post a link to prove me wrong IRL.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,388 ✭✭✭gbee

A bit of everything but nowadays, more like myself.

At one time I was a great troll, haven't trolled in over five years and I'm still laughing.

You can't get away with what one could in the past, Gogole will find you in five seconds, most of us know one another by this stage anyway too.

    Uh, I think I'm
    the same.
Haven't really given it much thought.

Actually this is an interesting question. I was thinking about my posting history yesterday. I started off posting quite seriously and then later on focusing on more humourous replies. I think though I prefer a mixture of the two within the right context.

The boardsie 'me' is no more 'me' than my work 'me' or any other social type situation. It's just an aspect of it. But the defining traits and opinions are mine.

Short answer: No. Long answer: Yes but sort of no.

Philosophical answer: The facade is real. The reality is false.

Whenever any of my friends are around in my house and fail to produce pictures of their sexual conquests, they are politely asked to leave. So yes, I'm the very same in real life.

A bit less serious in real life. For some reason on Boards I'm instantly attracted to a thread discussing topical issues. I don't think I've said anything to a person here that I wouldn't be willing to say to their face though.

I have no idea what I am like, here or in real life, never really took the time to do self analysis.

Others have though and the critics have turned out to be proven gobsh1tes.

In real life, I tape conversations I have with other people. If they annoy me and I can't think of a witty retort, I can spend hours thinking up one, then replay the conversation, pause it at the bit they annoyed me, and give them my sarcastic answer. Just like quoting.

People avoid respect me now because they know I'll always get one up on them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,349 ✭✭✭✭starlit

Yes I do. I act no different to when I am in real life as I do on boards. Fair enough I am shy and quiet in real life but I'm a very private person at the best of times, I might say a little more than normal when on boards thats all but how I act is very much the same as I would in real life especially once you get to know me I'm in the middle of being an introvert/extrovert!

What ever way I come across on boards, its the real me!

I can be funny unintentionally both on boards and in real life so...all cool!

I'm much nicer in real life.

I think I'm pretty similar, I'm very sarcastic IRL, always have an answer for everything or try to make a joke of everything (not necessarily succeeding!) but I'm also quite nice and generally logical. I can be quite opinionated but would express it here with strangers more than with RL strangers but my friends would know the boards me. Does that cover everything?

I frequently add posts like'aw what a feed' or 'oh smell that fart',pretty much the exact same as I'd say in real life.

Pretty much the same IRL, though I have cut down on the puns as they trip off the tongue at the most inappropriate moments.

I'm fairly similar to my online personality. Though I don't follow up one liners with pacman faces in real life :pac:

There's bound to be a difference. The anonymity of the interwebs allows us to indulge in thoughts / opinions / feelings that we couldn't do with the same degree of confidence in daily public life.

Ironically, I have to tone things down on the interwebs. I'm much more rapey in real life.

OP - What's 'real life'? Excluding the internet warrior types who are probably used as human doormats in 'real life'. I assume most of us on here are who we are. Whether I'm talking to you face to face, on the phone or via cyberspace why would my values and opinions change?

I'm aware that there are some very opinionated people on these forums and there are comments that are thrown out there that would probably never be heard in real life unless you're asking for a good smacking. I was just wondering if people here would act the same way and say the same things in real life as they do on these forums or are many of you putting on a separate personality?

In my case, I'm very shy and reserved in reality (I'm nervous right now about making a new thread) but on boards, I notice I'm a lot more outgoing and a bit perverted in a way. Well, I guess I'm that way in real life as well once I feel close enough to you.

Are you putting up a facade?!

I'm the same but much much fatter.

Actually, when you're out in the world and socializing, is that real life as well? There are people who act differently around family and friends, so which one is the real you? Indeed, what IS real life? I don't know about particular values and opinions changing just because you're typing instead of talking face to face but sometimes they may be influenced by the surrounding environment. I don't know what real life is...for some, it may be the internet, but there are many different aspects to a person and although one's personality may differ depending on the situation, real life is...

GAH balls I lost my train of thought.

  • Registered Users Posts: 866 ✭✭✭RussellTuring

I think people have already hit the nail on the head by asking what your real personality is. Few of us act the same around our families as we do around colleagues/college mates/customers etc. I find boards and, in a more general sense, the Internet, to be just another outlet and another aspect of my life.

If the question is am I just as opinionated, sarcastic and at times jovial with people on boards as I would be with people I don't know very well in a social setting like the pub, then I think I am. I like to have arguments with people who have strong opinions that may be the opposite of mine but at the end of the day I think it's nothing to get worked up about.

I'm pretty much the same. Usually opposite moods though - if I'm in a ****ty mood IRL I'm nice on here and in a good mood IRL I'm usually a dickhead on here.

Yeah, I certainly don't intentionally put on an act here - as I said though, how I act will be obviously shaped by the setting. And obviously this setting is different to offline.

For instance, I'm way less serious in real life - because real life doesn't have lots of serious threads. I'm also less cranky towards people in real life - because real life thankfully doesn't involve the same amount of dickheads as online.

I'd say I'm pretty damn unfiltered here, just like "real life". I tend not to be different around different people. Maybe I should start! :D

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
