He might be dead but he is still the most honest (and probably the most decent) politician ever to grace these shores.

Anyways if hitler is allowed to Godwin the thread then Tony Gregory is allowed in here.

Trevor Sargent was the first one I thought of.

After him Luke Flanagan in Roscommon. Took a voluntary pay cut, (believes politicans are paid far too much), a straight talker if ever their was one. He might come across as a bit rough around the edges but by God does he speak from the heart. A passionate, committed, honest public servant. How many of the current sitting self serving TD's/Senators can you say that about?

I heard him compared to that fat slime ball rat Jackie Healy Rae. They might be both culchies but thats where it ends. You would not see him sucking up to FF only to jump (the sinking) ship at the last minute when it became apparent his Christmas list of Tralee bypasses, Hospitals, potholes filled, fences painted and whatever else was not going to happen.

I'd love to see Luke run in the next general election and oust that Gob****e Michael Finneran.

Being fair, it's not likely he knew about that.
I'm not talking about at the time when the woman was a child. I'm referring to this:

Won't do me any favours here but personally I'd throw Brian Lenihan into the mix. He's a man who I don't think is deliberately going out of his way to mislead, lie, muddy the waters etc. In time I think the man will be vindicated when the full truth about who said what over the last couple of years comes out, if some rumours in the financial world are to be believed. He could be happily retired now sippling cocktails by a pool somewhere, but he isn't. He had the bottle to step up to the plate despite his own personal problems and carry on. He, personally, regardless of politics etc has my respect.
As mentioned earlier, I believe Brian Lenihan to be a man of high integrity and decency. I don't think it was fully understood just how much of a mess the banks were in until it was too late. Lenihan was passed the poisoned chalice and told to deal with it.
I have even more respect for him if rumours of him leading a breakaway FF party are true.

Ridiculous, Lenihan continuously misled the Irish people regarding the state of the Banks, 'we've turned the corner' , 'the worst is over' and then later tried to deny he said this!! He also misled his party members regarding his intentions in the FF leadership battle. No Lenihan is not a straight or honest politician.

Joe Higgins would get my vote and unlike many here I do support his policies.

Never met joe higgins, but hear alot of people say he is decent. But is he really? ... Lets just over-view politicians. There is roughly two kinds of people who get into politics:

1, A person who just gets into it to get a plum job / only for the money / everything that comes with it.
    >> Saying what people want to hear, recieving back handers, corrupt ... None of the aforementioned would be shocking from this character.

2, A person who genuinely wants to change things. Make things better and lets be honest, someone who wants the money too. But they have princibles.
    >> whats going to happen tho. A honest man cant make it in a corrupt world that is politics. They'll either change or be eaten alive.

So what is a "politician" ... they're all the same.

    Joe Higgins.

As for Trevor Sargent Well when he said would not lead the Greens into govt. with FF I and a lot of other people took that to mean the Greens would not do a deal with them. He got around that by resigning as leader but he still took a Minister's post in the coalition. Too weaselly for me. Any Green Party member that went into government with FF isn't even being honest with themselves

Straight up has to be Joe Higgins. No time for his politics but I respect the man himself, if not what he stands for. One of the best on the spot orators in the Dáil for sure and I'll give credit where credit is due, he sticks by his own principles it seems.
