Anyone see the alien over Jerusalem? What do you think it wants?

Gas, a refection of life, some sort of aircraft/balloon.

    Or Jesus. Probably Jesus.

The feedback forum is mad for that.

Someone briefly mentioned on a thread recently that someone will disagree with the OP within 6 posts on AH.

I have since noticed this to be surprisingly accurate. On pretty much every subject no matter how water-tight the OP's point is, someone will have to contradict it within 6 posts, or if they can't, make a petty semantic point about how the opinion was expressed.

What are the other unwritten laws of After Hours?

Funnily, at least six posts followed your opening post in this thread without anyone looking to either contradict you or quibble with how you expressed your point.
In attempting to shine further light on this suppossed truism, it would seem you either exposed it as a fallacy or managed to consign an 'unwritten law' worthy of the title to the dustbin of After Hours history.
Perhaps, this was your plan all along.

Can't believe It didn't make the mainstream news. Aliens land and nobody cares for some reason. The human race should be worried!

The mods just love, love closing threads for some bizarre resaon.

If a thread is unpopular it will close itself, trust me. You just need to moderate the trolls.

I always find it funny when the AH mods close a thread. Like, if it's After Hours (don't forget the meaning)- who gives a flying fúck, that's the reason for AH in the first place.

In practice, it should be be the least moderated forum on Boards.ie. But the mods think - because it's the most popular forum - it should be moderated accordingly. One or two mods here are on a total total power trip; thinking - "I've a good reason to close this thread now and I'm going for it". Who bloody cares? It's a 'free for all' forum, where anything goes, and no-one really gives a shít. It's funny all the same, when they do it. If a thread is unpopular, it will die a unnatural death anyway.

I was going to reply to a few threads today, but this biko mod closed them. For christ sake man, grow up!
I think there is too much modding myself too. :)

Take it to feedback? Though, TBH, it's modded pretty well, if it were a free for all it would turn into a cess pit. Particularily with cliques and attention whores.

Law #23146: If there is a thread mentioning the British Monarchy, Army or any other institution within the realm of the United Kingdom certain posters will come on and argue the thread until all discussion other than their own disappears at which point the thread has devolved from it's original purpose.

Law #23147: If a double standard is mentioned Dudess will kick your ass.

Law #23148: Sharpshooter is the only mod allowed to close a thread with a pun. Any attempt by another mod to usurp her responsibility will result in a fine to the tune of 40% of their coke and/or hookers.

Law #23149: This is not the Dublin forum...however all beers will be held in Dublin.

As the poster above stated, i think it's in general very well moderated.
The only quibble i'd have is that any thread that's in any way seen to be sports related, even if it's actually really about a different issue, is automatically closed; the whole Sky sports/sexism issue of recent times is a case in point.
They're letting the Super Bowl related thread tonight go, though, fortunately and rightly so; because it isn't actually really about sport as much as a once a year event.
Don't know if that signals a change in policy or is related to the fact that it was started by a well established poster.

I coudn't be arsed taking it to feedback; because quite frankly I couldn't give a shít. That's the way AH should be, and was always intended to be.

Threads here should never, ever be locked unless they had legal implications, or the OP was trolling etc. That's the whole idea of After Hours. If the members of the board aren't interested, the thread will disappear anyway. It's the members who make up the board. The moderators here never seemed to grasp that idea.

What is the idea of closing a thread anyway? If a thread is unpopular it will die anyway. I just never got it.

I see mods here closing threads simply because they can, and no other reason. Like, who gives a shít?

Alot of threads end up being pointless back and forths between 2 or 3 people, giving the same points over and over again. It's simply clutter. I mean, some threads may be closed unnecessarily, but threads that are just 2 people arguing where noone can get a word in edge ways and noone will give up any ground are better off being thrown out. Some become simpyl people flirting, which gives off a cliquey atmosphere that doesn't let outsiders into the forum, which is bad for growth.

Now, for the purposes of research I went through the last 5 pages of threads, and I can't actually find one that was closed that didn't deserve to be. The ones that were closed have forums to discuss those topics, were troll threads, or just completely retarded.

I don't know why someone would want so much clutter here?

Law #23150: Someone will always have a gripe about the moderation of AH.

So did you invest in XEL, like I advised when I replied to your PM back in November? The price is £3.64 now, but it did hit a high of £4.20. It was £2.30 when I sent the PM, and it's only getting started .:) I wouldn't call that trolling. :)

ah remember that :D, didn't invest in it :( fair play though, hope you are in at £2.30 :)

And somone will always back up the mods, no matter what, like yourself.
For christs sake; there's been hundreds of threads closed here over the last year - simply because they could be - and no other reason. "I can close this threawill".
Like I've been saying; if a thread is unpopular it will disapper anyway, so there's no reason for closing a thread in the first place, absolutely none, whatsoever.
Show me an example of a thread closed that was not justifiable?

The problem is loads of threads would take forever to die, particularily back and forth arguments and flirting. In one thread before I had 25 thanked posts of absolute drivel in less than 3 hours because there was a circle jerk of flirting that gave a clique vane to the forum. If all threads were like that this place would suck. The moderation is used in moderation.

On a mobile now so sorry for spelling mistakes.

Cool, I look forward to seeing it. In the interest of fairness though, only list threads by current mods. Not like old mods matter.

Minidazzler, I could show you hundreds of examples of threads closed for no reason.. It would be comical to see them. I'm going to list them tomorrow on this thread.

Unless this thread were to be locked.....

Laws? After Hours? WTF? I will admit have just come across the thread..(not that I'm just back from possibly self imposed imprisionment)...but outlaws...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,079 ✭✭✭✭Micky Dolenz

You always have someone giving out about the mods. You start a few daft threads that get locked, then all the mods just want to lock things without reason.

And AH modding itself, don't make me laugh.

The past tense of spell is spelled.

The past tense of spell is spelled spelt.

Any decent thread in AH will always be fücked up by some humourless gob****e with a bone to pick.

Law #2345678 In a thread where an OP defines a universal rule of AH, that will be the one and only thread to which the rule does not apply, for the same reasons that the rule exists in the first place; people are contrary bast*rds.

    This sentence is not true.

At least one quarter of the people in the thread will try and subvert what they perceive is going to be the popular wisdom of AH. Sometimes it works out that they get trapped going in circles as AH is a fiercely whimsical place.

Someone posts something about a terrible crime - cries of "torture them to death" followed by a more wordy post involving actual thought, which is met with "You're a bleeding heart do-gooder PC liberal commie-nazi and I bet you'd like that criminal to be given a nice hotel room til they die".

Any scandal and someone will add gate to the end of it. Anglogate or Cowengate as examples

Any thread on immigration will have a Southpark video

Any post with a Father Ted quote will be showered with thanks

And always, posters rush to be first to reply, Post 2 is for thankswhores

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

Unfounded accusations of thanks-whoring (sorry, but I really think much of that is all in the head - there has to be someone who'll post the second reply, should people wait a while so that they're not post 2?)

    Obsession with mods
