Weds 5th Jan, 5 mls easy/moderate around home and up to shelbourne park and down by the riverbank in 41'47 (8'21) Felt a good bit better today but not 100% yet. I should be ok by tomorrow, just in time for work . Heading to the airport soon, back in 9 days though :D, i've a job to do in the south east now!

Hopefully see you there. I've been given the all clear with the christening on the 23rd January (Hopefully I can do both Waterford and Raheny now!). The only glitch will be getting off work, I'll know on monday either way.

Yeah i'll be around alright. Not sure if i'm heading to the game but i'm living just off the holloway rd near the stadium so its no bother to call over somewhere.

Thurs 6th Jan, 10 mls in 79'30 (7'57). Ran up to White Hart Lane and back. Not all that impressive, but felt grand on the run, heart rate pretty low. Wanted to do that run at some stage and my curiosity is satisfied. I'm over the sickness now. Well tired though, was always gonna happen getting in so late last night. Not sure what the running plans are for the days ahead. I'll make something up, it's served me well so far!

Fri 8th Jan, 3.5 mls recovery at 9'13 pace, very slow and laboured, wrecked from adjusting the body clock from christmas back into work time. Was gonna do strides after but felt a little niggle in my left achilles. Core after for 20 mins or so but the niggle slowly became an injury, and sore enough after. Rest day enforced today, felt it slightly walking down to the Arsenal stadium earlier, especially on uphills which is worrying given what i'm reading online. Icing and taking anti inflamm's. I'll see how it is tomorrow, i'll do some indoor cycling if its still sore. In other words, a potential disaster with Waterford next week, that race could be cancelled given what happened Mallow today. Not even thinking about the ramifications for Barca.

Sun 9th Jan, 7 mls in 58'07 (8'17) up to Hampstead Heath and back, great to run on grass for a change. Achilles wasnt too bad, just a dull pain at times but didnt feel it mostly which is a big relief. Should be ok now for waterford. 25 mins core afterwards during the dull manu liverpool game.

Weekly Mileage, 32.5 mls and 5 runs, ok week bar the sickness spoiling the tempo run. Injury seems to have faded, hopefully. Its all set up for a PB next weekend hopefully.

Yearly Mileage, 41.5 mls. miserable position on the 1,000 mile challenge but even teams like blackpool can be riding high on the league table after the first week or 2 :D

Mon 10th Jan, 5.5 mls in 48'30 (8'49) easy. Seems pretty slow but didnt stop it at crossroads, of which there were several. Down to primrose park for 2 laps on the grass, broke in my new Wave inspire 6's, which i'm probably using on Saturday in Waterford. The old wave inspire 5's which served me so well for the last 7 months feel dead so they have to go. I could possibly use my racing shoes on Saturday but not for a half i think. Achilles was ok mostly, i still know its there though but it isnt stopping me from running. I cant see myself running the Raheny 5, 2 weeks after waterford is a bit soon. The 3pm start is a bit crap for me too, i'd hate to be rushing to the airport after the finish. Everton vs Chelsea in the cup that weekend is being planned at the mo and i'm in Dublin the weekend after anyway.

Tues 11th Jan, 6 mls in 48'59 (8'10) with 2 mls at tempo pace, 3 mls at start in 26'39 (8'50) then the 2 tempo miles around the tempo triangle, as i call it near me; 6'43 and 6'41, this was much better than last weeks sick effort, HR more like normal. Did this run just as a confidence boost for Saturday and to test the shoes/achilles at pace. Achilles was ok during the tempo but a little sore after. Not worried about it really. Entered Waterford at long last afterwards.

Know how you felt last week, after dozing on and off all day, went out for just over 5 easy miles this evening (what was i thinking like). My god, pure hell, tight chest, couldn't pick up speed, got back and literally legs were seizing and im now worse than i was earlier - chills, getting a chesty cough. Well done me.

I think il get cover for my class tomorrow afternoon, il see how i feel in the morning. Hopefully if i rest a until the race il be ok.

BTW and don't want to sound alarmist, I would take heed of the achilles - if it's acting up moreso AFTER your run, not a good sign. I'm telling ya. You don't want to end up like I did last year. How it sounds for you is how it started for me and i ignored it until it was too late. Im sure Kennyb3 would agree.

I know trust me there is a nagging in the back of my mind about a possible long term injury off this. But today was the first day it wasnt sore in the morning. I reckon i can get away with it this weekend with icing and anti inflammatories, then take a few days off next week. Put it this way, a long term running injury would not do wonders for me over here in London if you know what i mean.

Thurs 13th Jan, 4 mls easy in 34'38 (8'40) around the rush hour footpaths/roads . Achilles was ok throughout and didnt feel it after. Rest day yesterday did the trick possibly, but i didnt do anything at pace tomight so i cant be sure. I'll definitely be on the start line in Waterford on Saturday anyway, no reason to think it will flare up during the race. Afterwards is another story. Planes, trains and automobiles after work to get home tomorrow. Thats life!

Go team public transport in multiple countries to get home! 2 RER trains, one plane and two buses in Dublin to get home tonight... :pac:

    Sat 15th January.

I was quite fortunate to be able to run this race with it being cancelled in December. Funny i had no intention of racing it back then and the rescheduling fitted in perfectly with my running for a pb attempt, 1'28'31, from the race series half in 2009, one of my softer pb's along with the 3'22 marathon. The 10 mile run on stephens day pointed to a definite pb and i knew something special was on.

Having flown to Shannon from London the night before, i made the trip down to Waterford, 7 hrs trip in total, better be worth it i thought! Did about a mile warm up and off we went. I was thinking 6'40's for the first few but the weather had something to say about that. After about 1.5 mls we were out of the city and onto the Tramore Road. I didnt feel great here for whatever reason even though i was on pace. The HR was far too high, 188 region. 3 mls of 6'38, 6'43 and 6'48 had me almost on target. I followed 3 others and let them do all the work at this point. But when the headwind hit my group fragmented and the pace dropped to over 7:00's, a worrying sign. I spotted a group up ahead and bridged the gap and sheltered again, but their pace just wasnt fast enough. Spotted a group about 50m up the road so made an attempt to cross the gap but the howling gale and rain made made this impossible and i soon became isolated, not what i wanted at all. Pace was quite slow here 7'03, 6'47, 7'04, 6'46. We then left the main road which broke the monotony somewhat. This is where i decided enough was enough, i was running out of miles and the 1'30 pacers were not all that far behind me as i passed halfway in 44'57.

From here i charged onwards up the hill and ran hard down the other side, passing runners gradually until we hit the main road again and the much needed tailwind. The next few miles were poetry in motion, just a matter of picking off one runner after another, next 3 mls 6'16, 6'22, 6'22 and it felt so easy. Never felt so good in a road race actually. The pb was now definitely back on the cards, it was just a matter of whether i would break it or smash it :D

The next 2 mls were slightly downhill, 6'06 and 6'14 , with Rihanna's 'Whats my name' on a constant loop in my head. This happens to me every road race and i have no control over the song, it just happens :o, a change from the rubberbandits at least. The last mile i knew sub 1'27 was a formality and it felt great :p. Turning back towrds the RSC and the finish, i felt cramps impulsing through my calves, but close enough to the finish for it not to matter. The headwind up the home straight nearly killed me and i had nothing left for a sprint finish. I was mindful of the achilles injury from earlier in the week, which thankfully wasnt a factor at all, so i just coasted in with satisfied grin on my face in 1'26'21 for 33rd place, delighted with the run, my hard work since the DCM paid off it seems. All in all, a great race. Probably the 2nd most enjoyable race i've run after the DCM, the food after was excellent.

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/63622775

Met the boardsies after, RK, Meno, Aimman, Claralara, jcsmum and we went for a few in town. Great company as always. I was limping around after the post race cramp, much to their amusement!

Looking forward, Barca is very much on the horizon, i talked to a few lads after the finish and they thought i was mad to have a 3'22 target for there, more like 3'05 they thought. I just havent the mileage done i know and i will settle for a pb before a proper attempt later in 2011.

Week total, 29.5 mls and 4 runs. Didnt bother doing anything today as i was travelling back to London, still a bit of a limp. Great end to an average week.

    Yearly Mileage, 71 mls.

    great race - well done.

Got to ask a boring question - what's your max HR??? Maintaining the mid 180's for over an hours and 20 mins is hard work.

Cheers, yeah i'm fairly sure its 202/203. I was shooting for an average of somewhere in the low 180's throughout alright.

Mon 17th Jan, 4 mls recovery in 36'35 (9'09) Painful stuff, dead from saturday and all the travelling. Threw in a "fast" mile at the end (8'40, lol) to add some respectability to the scoreboard. I spent 14 hours travelling in total at the weekend, thats USA and back ffs and feeling the effects now.

Plan for the week; Tues - 5 mls easy, Weds - 10-12 mls medium long run before the Leeds match. Thurs - 4mls easy/recovery. Fri - Lunchtime intervals on the track beside work, 5/6 x 800 or the likes. Sisters are over Sat so the weekend could be bare. I'd love to do the parkrun 5k on Sat morning, but i cant see myself getting out of bed for it :pac:

Tues 18th Jan, 3.5 mls easy in 30'48 (8'48) down to kings cross/st pancras and back. Took it easy, London eye in view the first half which was mostly downhill. Heading back up was a bit of struggle, still tired from the weekend but not as bad as yesterday.

Today would have been my 2 yr dole anniversary :D

Weds 19th Jan, 10 mls in 83'20 (8'20) up to Muswell Hill via a load of horror hills. Didnt feel great throughout but stuck at it. Happy to finish. Good to get a double figure run in for a change.

^ I wouldnt mind a week or 2 (more) on the dole for a bit of a rest tbh :)

    Thurs 20th Jan
, 5 mls easy in 43'44 (8'45) down to Primrose Hill Park, 2 laps, including the steep climb for the great view of downtown, then back. Any little incline i'm running up these days on training runs is killing me and i feel like stopping to walk, but i flew up them in both the half and the 10 miler, strange. I'm doing a lot of slow mileage these days but it's doing no harm evidently. I'll need to start doing sub 8 min miles before barca i know. Unsure about the lunchtime intervals tomorrow, might just do another easy one, last weekend hit me for 6 it seems.

Summoned the reserves for 25 mins core afterwards.

5 x 800m today at lunchtime on Parliament Hill track in Hampstead Heath beside work. Lovely day for it, blue skies. 1 ml w/u (8'38) then 2'54, 2'55, 2'57, 2'58, 2'58. Didnt kill myself, but i was quite tired nonetheless, legs a bit dead. Still a bit tired but good to do a track session, i havent done one since i decided to come over here in late november. 1 ml w/d then in 8'11. 4.5 mls total in 32'08 (7'08). I'll try to run one of the next 2 days but i doubt it.
