Some serious lack of respect from people in here.

    Honestly, shame on you.

Grow up and have some decency.

Maybe you don't have to respect for the man in question but you could at least show some respect for the posters who have come on here stating they knew him on a personal basis.

My condolences to his family and friends.

I have served with this lad for a long time and now I am waiting for the funeral arrangements. I think there are topics to be discussed but now is not the right time. Please show respect and close this thread now.

Sorry. The discussion should be seperated.

The religious influence on this country over the last few hundred years means we aren't allowed discuss suicide cases and the stigma attached to them. It's a load of sh1te to be honest, and this "hush hush don't offend anyone" attitude is exactly why it's so prevalent in Ireland.

In other news, 2 young 27 year old lads and a 39 year old pregnant woman were killed in a car crash in Monaghan yesterday. We'll discuss that alright - And road deaths will continue falling, (think this year will be the lowest yearly fatality rate since records began in the 60's) . But we won't discuss suicide cases, while at the same time watching the rates spiral out of control.

Sorry to hear about your mate Mak.

    RIP.

We're all in the same boat my friend. Same uniform, same bitching & moaning, but at the same time watching out for each other & having each other's backs when the chips are down.

Serving in the defence forces is a unique bond, and we all feel the loss of one. Regardless of rank or status, or post/bks they served or the circumstances of their deaths, speaking of such I'm reminded of the narration to the ex-COS Lieut Gen Dermot Earley R.I.P. in An Cosantoir.. For Whom the Bell Tolls..
    "Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
    Therefore, send not to know
    For whom the bell tolls,
    It tolls for thee."

Some amount of dickheads on AH today.

    RIP

Although I must say, if a newsworthy thread is to be closed because a poster knows the person in question, with the greatest of respect to said posters, that, In my mind, is not a good enough reason. Either every thread of someone dieing is closed, or none are.

A happy medium would be to lock the thread, and open it again in a day or two perhaps.

    +1.

    I agree completely.

And I know its the job of a journalist to sell news papers. But these headlines are designed to make the reader initially thing one man shot another man in Government Buildings - that would be big news. But using the death by suicide of one ordinary man to sell a newspaper is pretty contemptible IMO.

You think that was the last one?.

I'll be honest about something, if I tried all day I couldn't remember the amount of Defence Forces personnel who have died by suicide in the last two years.

Thats quite scary. Suicidal people with guns in public places

would be a sub editor or editors fault - creating headlines !!

its disrespectful to the families and co-workers in my opinion (and I work in the media)

Well I think these people can live with themselves. Sure to these people tomorrow it'll be yesterdays news, good for nothing better than wrapping your chips in.

In Ireland there is a taboo with depression. It just is something men don't get and if you do, you're considered to be weak, to be sick, to be something less than human, and to not be a man. It is a horrible state of affairs, especially when people are also as unwilling to listen to people's problems than people are talking about them. If you talk to a counselor, you are seen as being extremely weak.

Is this Dr Internet personal opinion or do you have specific qualified knowledge to substantiate your claims? IMO, this is total rubbish? Where's the taboo, Ireland has one of the highest rates of suicides, publically recorded etc etc, so its all out there. The reasons are varied and mostly tragic.

The last sentence demonstrates an utter lack of any care or see any potential value in someone who may be vunerable might be advised to speak to a counsellor.

Ignorance and hearsay is weak, when dealing with weak and vunerable people, surely unconstructive remarks should be avoided at all costs?

Suicides are high in almost every military around the world. And i can understand why due to the more likely chance of being involved in conflict and suffering PTSD. But i don't understand why Ireland would have a high number. I've a few mates in various military roles and they always look less stressed than mates doing 9-5 in offices. I never hear them complain that they've to miss out on a session due to work or anything so i assumed they enjoyed it.

    Anyways condolences.

first. ya have to ask why did the guy do what he did, was he under financial
    pressures, negative equity etc etc

second. you have to ask who's at fault and who's to blame for not changing the system (or even trying to do anything barr make it even worse!!)

OK folks, we are going to leave this one locked. A number of people on here are suffering a loss today and it would be civil to allow them to do so without defending some of the accusations made here.
This is best re-visited at a later date.
    Please PM me for clarification.
