    @Fighting Irish

Cop on. You are completely misunderstanding people's posts and coming across as a bit of a troll. People are saying that AH is not the place that this should be discussed about, because there are people who will make this into a joke and for people that know this person, do you really think they want to see someone joke about it? They are not trying to stop a discussion on it, more moving it to somewhere that a proper discussion can be held.

@ your comment about keeping suicide under wraps, I thought it was pretty crystal clear that the poster was referring to the fact that there are so many more suicides that go unreported, but this one gets a spotlight. It should be news that someone has killed themselves, so the government can see that this is as big a problem as it is and that something needs to be done.

Please lads, he was a mate. Don't act the sack.

Sorry to hear that Mairt, it's a terrible thing to happen and something that shouldn't be open to speculation here.

So we're not allowed discuss it because someone here's knew the guy? And imo, you're a pretty weak person if you can't ignore a joke

So we want suicide to be reported by the news, and when they do report one, we the people decide we shouldn't discuss it?

I really hope that someone close to you doesn't commit suicide so you don't have to know how it feels. You are a tool. I don't care if that gets me an infraction or a ban, I'll gladly take one because you are a complete and utter ignorant tool.

    Condolences on your co-worker's death.

    always tragic to happen.

I just hope some army personnel don't use the death to try to manipulate the public to believe this could be due to the dispute between the government and army personnel concerning payments....similar to taxi drivers claiming suicides were the fault of the government/regulator.

Is there some law that dictates that when something bad happens to a previously anonymous person who works for a relatively benign organisation, some begrudger has to emerge?

SLightly harsh reactions. It hasn't been reported as a suicide and could very possibly have been an accident for all we know. i appreciate that some of you know this man and may know more about the situation but it has not been shared with people outside the army to my knowledge.

Apologies if it came across as harsh but the man died of a single gunshot wound to the head.

As someone trained on 9 different weapons and knowing the weapon in question, the thoughts that someone could accidently shoot themselves in the head with the weapon in question is ridiculous.

Sadly, that is the internet for you - and even worse, some of our own people.

Stupid of RTE and/or the rest of the press to report this. A neighbour's son died in the same place a few years back and they had the sense not to report it. Another family around the corner lost their son and 2 kids lost a father a few years back at this time of year somewhere in Portlaois I think it was. Both were army men but the amount of other suicides in the last couple of years I've heard of is stupidly high.

    Hope he's alright now anyway.

I agree - but who told them !!

Suicide should not be reported (unless its of interest to the general public....ie a public figure).

it is a private matter for the family of the people involved....I dont want to speculate of this particular death is suicide or not...may his soul and the souls of the departed Rest in Peace.

Didn't realise suicide was so rife in the Army! Then again it's pretty rife in this country as a whole.
Christmas time seems to send alot of people over the edge. Feel very sorry for his family.

I honestly cannot get over some of the ignorance and blatant disrespect to this man's life as shown in this thread.

    Repulsive.

Suicide should be reported. But i can't expect a religious person to agree.

Most of what i am saying is about suicide in general, nothing personal to this guy. But then i didn't know him so i couldn't care less tbh. And before people  at me for saying that, millions of people die everyday and do you care about them dying?

Yes but a poster on this thread knew the guy so would you ever grow up and show a bit of respect ffs. How would you feel it it was someone close to you? I wouldn't mind if your posts were even mildly amusing, but they're not.

Millions of people die every day, yes. Do I care - of course I bloody do. They're people, just like you and me. It must suck to have your mentality, really.

Its common courtesy to allow the family of the deceased, along with his or her colleagues, grieve in their own way, without dissecting the poor person's motivations in public, as is happening here.

    Rest in peace.

I dont think covering up the problem helps the problem, its increases the stigma to families who really have eough to deal with and means that those alive may be less likely to seek help because of the stigma around it.

Individual suicides shouldn't be reported, not at the time of the death anyway, but the public should be made aware of the statistics.

Statistics don't reflect the level of pain a family suffers from the selfish act of suicide.

Plastering it on the front page of a paper doesn't either, nor does it help that pain.

    I didn't say that

    Ah sure why not?

Those who wish to mourn the millions of lives which are extinguished every day despite not knowing the circumstance or personality of said persons can have a place to express that.

I have served with this lad for a long time and now I am waiting for the funeral arrangements. I think there are topics to be discussed but now is not the right time. Please show respect and close this thread now.
