Why? Material things will be no good to you in the afterworld. Or as I like to call it, the dark realm ;)

I was at the last three end of the worlds (1986, 1992 and 2000).... cost me a fortune in drink and I lost my 92 job because of that party. Very enjoyable though. Lokking forward to the next one.

According to them, mankind will be entering into a new spiritual age after aforementioned date.
    We're all going to heaven.

Yeah I know it's all a load of crap, but if people are going to harp on about 2012 they might at least get the Mayan view right....

Even Larry Murphy. I'd say he'd have a story or two over a few pints. I bet pints are real cheap in heaven too. Actually i'd say that's what heaven is, that state of initial intoxication when everything is funny and good fun.
Then hell is 3am when people are getting sick and starting fights with your mates and taxis keep driving past you.

Professor, without knowing precisely what the danger is, would you say it’s time for our viewers to crack each other’s heads open and feast on the goo inside?

    Yes Kent, yes I would.

Strangely, any somewhat educated look at the perilous condition many of the institutions that bind together the world as we currently know it, would suggest that a certain confluence of events could, indeed, lead to a seismic shift in a system/balance of power that has, despite seemingly potentially game-changing events, been essentially secure for quite a few centuries.
I've read a number of philosophers/economists/analysts who, some up to 70 years ago, have highlighted somewhere around this time-frame as potentially housing a epoch changing shift.
I have no faith in soothsayers; or no reason to.
Did the Mayans have some divine or other knowledge that lends some weight to their purported prognostications; i doubt it.
Is there any reason pay any more attention to the more contemporary soothsayers/analysts i alluded to; i don't know.
Forgetting about the world as a whole, though, there's no doubt that our own country is heading for something truly traumatic unless something changes soon.

If kinda have two opinions on this depending on when you ask me,
    Ans1)
Yes, North Korea are going to spawn WWIII and we're all going to die. The poles are over 35,000 year over due to shift. The ice age is coming. Massive objects in our neighborhood ect. I've heard about 2012 since 1998! So I've been ****ting it most of my life.

    Ans2)
No, There's always a new Armageddon a few years away as soon as the last one passes. Also I've just been charged an Xbox live subscription that WILL be apparently be renewed next in 2013 so if Microsoft thinks we're going to make I'd think everything's going to be OK :)

I kind of hope we do get WWIII - there's **** all on telly.

Yeah thats right. I know things are ok for many now but our government, banks and the eu are plunging us - an entire nation - into slavery and poverty for life.

Ah yes, the old "The End is Nigh - we are Doomed" is doing the runs again.

I remember in my old school days (late 80's - early 90's) when Global Warming, Greenhouse Gasses, Cows farting (methane) etc were affecting the worlds temperature and Ireland was going to have a climate similar to Spain.

I was so looking forward to growing my very own orange and lemon trees. If I could get my hands on my geography teacher Id strangle him.

    Feck it anyway!

French village prepares for the Apocalypse
A two-year count-down to the end of the world began yesterday for Bugarach, a village in the Corbières hills, east of the Pyrenées. A lot of people believe that the mountain just above the village has been assigned by extra-terrestrials as a place where the chosen few can survive Armageddon.

That may sound like the fantasy of an average cult, but the scenario, based on the supposed end of the Mayan calendar, is all too real for Bugarach, in the Aude département. With two years to go before the fatal 21st of December 2012 -- decreed by the Mayan calendar -- the village is already awash with would-be survivors and sundry new age pilgrims.

They are being drawn by the supposed mystical properties of the 4,000 foot Pic de Bugarach, an outcrop of rock that has long inspired legend, from the middle ages to Jules Verne and Stephen Spielberg. New arrivals, drawn by internet sites, are setting up new age businesses, sending up property prices and upsetting the locals with their rites.

Jean-Pierre Delord, the mayor, sounded the alarm yesterday over what he sees as the chaos that will result if thousands descend on Bugarach to escape judgment day, denoted American-style on the net as 12-21-12.

"I am beginning to wonder what is going to happen as 2012 approaches, when I see people moving in and already reserving their lodgings." Delord told the local press. "It may be necessary to call in the military to control the crowds, like in the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind," he added.

Gilbert Cros, the deputy mayor said pilgrims had replaced hikers on the peak. "This gives us a bad image. We have other things to sell: the landscape and local food products."

The Mayor's talk of Spielberg's 1977 UFO classic is not idle since the director is said to have been inspired by the Pic de Bugarach. There is no confirmation but Wikipedia states flatly that Spielberg dreamed up Close Encouters at Bugarach. As in the film, extra-terrestrials are at the heart of the local "mystery". Many have been sighted in the area, according to videos and end-of-the-world sites on the internet. A huge metal space craft lies under the mountain ready to spirit the chosen few to safety, say believers. "It is an extraterrestrial space base underground. The beings have a human aspect," says an unidentified expert, who quotes a "secret" Nasa study on Youtube.

The pilgrims who have set up home in tepees and yurts around the village are certain that the spot has been chosen as a life-boat for the global "cataclysm" which was predicted by the Maya and recounted in the popular 2008 disaster film 2012. Mareva, a 19-year-old clad in a sari, told a radio station yesterday: "I feel something very strong, as if nature is telling us a lot of things here."

Bugarach's role in the 2012 cataclysm is open to debate. The area, in the old heartland of the mediaeval Cathar sect between Carcassonne and Perpignan, is given to strange tales. The Knights Templars, the Israeli Secret Service, the late President Mitterrand and Nazi leaders are all said to have had a hand in the Bugarach mystery.

The state is taking the threat of a Bugarach rush seriously. The Gendarmerie is preparing its crowd-control plans and Miviludes, the state agency which tracks dangerous cults, is studying Bugarach and the "Apogalypse movement". "The past has taught us that this kind of belief can lead to tragedies," Georges Fenech, the agency's head, told le Figaro.

It's not as simple as you think. 'Global Warming', if it really is happening does not mean suntan lotion and orange trees for us (unfortunately).

What's happening is the North Pole ice caps are melting, ditching billions of gallons of fresh water into the Atlantic, thus diluting its salinity. By a complicated process this dilution can and possibly might turn off the system of ocean currents that transports warmer waters from the tropics to Northern Europe, and keeps our climate warmer than it strictly should be. Bear in mind we're at the same latitude as Canada which typically gets much harsher winters than we do, and we have our ocean currents to thank for that.
