The pots and pans are getting a right hammering. Sounds like something from an episode from Father Ted.

At first sight, the budget isn't anything like what I thought it would be. I was expecting an awful lot worse.

If you want to make more money get a job that is not minimum wage.

What jobs out there are minimum wage these days? Work hard and get a pay raise.
Alternatively, get an education or learn a trade...

    or emigrate... that too.

i do work hard as i appreciate my job. its in jobs where the minimum wage is earned that its hard to increase your pay. and i am in college, second year ucc

    Non-minimum wage earning job.

So if you earn minimum wage you don't have a "proper job", bit of a strange opinion tbh..

If anyone believes the tripe that is coming out of Michael Noonan's mouth must be sterilised. He is suffering from a severe bout of verbal diarrhoea.
Everything is completely negative and offensive minded towards the budget.

just so people know the budget is continuing on RTE2. Can'd be doing listening a a panel of muppets. Noonan is making a lot of sense in his budget rebuttal

Does Anyone know when the changes to the 3rd level grants come into affect? they have changed the distance for the non-adjacent grant from 24 km to 45km which will more than half the grant for people affected.

If I remember you correctly from posting earlier, you're 19. (if not disregard the following) I totally understand why you have to work a minimum wage job. It will be a stepping stone for you and best of luck in your future.

A 60% total rate on higher earnings.... that seriously can't be true.

    Fucking hell.

As well as child benefit reduction..
    http://budget.gov.ie/budgets/2011/Documents/Summary%20of%20Measures%20Combined.pdf
The maximum personal rate of payment for all weekly schemes (other than all personal rates for those aged 66 and over, Invalidity Pension and State Pension Transition recipients aged 65) will be reduced by €8 per week from the first week in January 2011 and proportionate decreases will apply in respect of people on reduced social insurance rates of payment.

Associated maximum Qualified Adult Allowance (QAAs) will generally decrease by €5.30 per week from the first week in January 2011 and proportionate decreases will apply in respect of people on reduced social insurance rates of payment.

There will be a decrease of €8 per week in the maximum and minimum rate of Maternity and Adoptive Benefits.

There will be a reduction of €6 per week in the rate of Jobseeker’s Allowance and Supplementary Welfare Allowance for those aged 22-24.

The rate of payment of Jobseeker’s Allowance and Supplementary Welfare Allowance for those aged 18-21 is unchanged.

There will be a reduction of €10 in the personal weekly rate of Supplementary Welfare Allowance.
    Activation measures

A reduced live register from a more intensive labour activation strategy.
    Children

Child Benefit will be reduced by €10 per month from January 2011 on both the lower and higher rate with an additional €10 per month decrease for the third child. The new rates will be €140 per month (first and second child), €167 (third child), €177 (fourth and subsequent children).
    Rent Supplement

The Rent Supplement Scheme will be reformed in order to control expenditure. This will include an additional €2 per week contribution by certain welfare recipients towards the cost of rent. This is consequential on the reduction in the rate of Supplementary Welfare Allowance.

To clarify, not everyone on minimum wage is a dosser or incapable of getting a 'real job'. My girlfriend, for instance, is completing her degree while working a minimum wage job to pay for it. Also, some people have had hard lives. They were never afforded the opportunities that other people were. I wish some of you right wingers were exert a bit more compassion for your fellow human beings and see this.

I don't believe it's your "right" to have children. If you cannot afford to have more children then stop having them.

Why is it obtuse to plan to have a good job and enough money and security before you have children rather than start popping out kids and expecting the state to babysit you?

I see your point but i think kids arent planned....they just happen...irresponsibly yes.

Actually this budget is hurting single-earners more than families. Families have taken a very slight hit.

A lot of people who never voted for this government do have good jobs and children and are hoping that they continue to hold onto those good jobs.

I doubt anybody (at least not in the private sector) is ever going to get a signed affidavit promising them that they have a job until retirement age.

Increase the PRSI rate for the self-employed,

    Oh, fucking brilliant.

So now I have to pay MORE PRSI... and for what?

Zero fucking benefits for me, that's what.

That can't have been 6 billion, surely?

Doesn't seem to have been too rough?

Also, does anyone have a link to a stream of just the Govt? I'm sick of RTE's fcuking panel banging on.

€8 reduction in socal wellfare comes into effect in january. €10 reduction in child benifit. Airport tax down to €3 (now slightly cheeper to leave the country), petrol/diesel up from tonight. No change in alcohol/tabocco that I can see, Dirt up to 2% to 27%. More people paying income tax. Income levy and pension levy now combined into a social payment, max €250,000 pay for public service, 10-14k pay cut for goverment ministers, presidential paycut from next serving president.

    Hmmmmmm.

Good point. The challenge is how to distinguish between those who deserve it and those who don't.

    They should legalize abortion .

    True.

Far too many cretinous posters around here have been allowed to slip through the net up to now.

It may not appear too bad, but keep in mind that the budgets will only get worse over the coming years.

Re: students working minimum wage jobs - there is no way what I posted applies here. I was certainly not saying anything about minimum wage workers being dossers (and apologies if it came across that way).

I'm saying to complain that you cannot raise a family on minimum wage does not change if the minimum wage is slightly lowered.
There is no reason that full-time minimum wage workers cannot get raises as well as anyone else - skill up and look for new jobs all the time.
thank you, can you shed anymore light on how much i will lose per week from that post?
It really really depends. Do you pay tax now?

IMO it's 2010. 90% of the time kids are planned if you are responsible.
I understand that there are accidents, but to sit back and work a minimum wage job and take your state benefits is unfair to everyone else.
