I just got my Sky HD box (€30 for box & install) and I signed up to the HD package (€5 pm), and I'm impressed with the quality of the HD and the new EPG/Menus. Now I hate giving Sky my hard earned money just as much as the next person but I thought the above offer was reasonable. I then put the old box in the bedroom and use it as a freesat/freeview box. I was surprised you couldn't watch your recordings on the old Sky+ box (ie. on the hard-drive) without a Sky viewing card, bummer !!!!! But............I've also got another surprise, its on the HD box, and its EPG !! It seems I have a double EPG or something, like as if both the Engerlish & Irish EPG are multiplexed, I'm sure this is not normal !!! ie. I've got BBC1 & RTE1 on channel 101, the same for BBC2/RTE2>102. I also have 'Other' Channels on the EPG (which I can record), eg. CBEEBEES, BBC3/4 etc, ...........except for one channel: BBC1 HD, again bummer. When my OH questioned the installer about this irregularity he said: "ah its just a wierd Sky thing atm, it will be resolved in the future" !!!!!

Well I also got my Sky HD upgrade today on the €30 installation and €5 per month offer. Now working fine and I also have BBC HD in my EPG. All working fine and I can record it as normal.
So I'm surprised that older subscribers don't get it.
When my box was switched on it did a software update. Perhaps people need to that?

Is it BBC HD or BBC1 HD you have ? BBC HD has been available on The EPG since the summer (I think)

Its not enough that we pay more for our Sky subs but Irish Subscribers now loose out on

    BBC One HD
    BBC 3
    BBC 4
    Ch5
    Ch5 HD
    Five US
    Fiver
    CH4 HD
    ITV
    ITV2
    ITV3
    ITV3
    ITV1 HD
    ITV2 HD
    ITV3 HD
    ITV4 HD

I wouldnt mind but our beloved government transmit all our channels to the North and yet we get nothing in return except BBC 1 NI, BBC2 NI and BBC HD

Time to swap my Irish subs to a UK Subs.

You can get most of those channels on sky, they just arent on the main menu but on the other channels option.

    BBC One HD
    BBC 3
    BBC 4

These could be added with a deal made by Sky and BBC Worldwide
(a la BBC 1 and 2 NI and BBC HD). Entirely up to the BBC.

    Ch5
    Ch5 HD
    Five US
    Fiver

Not a Sky issue. Five do not want to broadcast to Ireland or appear on the Irish EPG. Five is available off the EPG on Sky as it's FTA.

    CH4 HD

Again, up to the broadcaster (C4).

    ITV
    ITV2
    ITV3
    ITV3
    ITV1 HD
    ITV2 HD
    ITV3 HD
    ITV4 HD

Blame TV3, not Sky. TV3 have prevented ITV allowing carriage of UTV on the Sky EPG. Same issue with rest of ITV's bouquet of channels.

The issues usually lie with the broadcaster, not Sky.
If enough people leave Sky, it may compel them to make new deals with the BBC and C4 to add the rest of those channels. I don't see ITV - or especially Five - doing a deal to appear on the Irish EPG any time soon.

I'm pretty sure that the BBC would allow these on the Irish epg, but BBC Worldwide would expect payment from Sky for them. In which case it's really up to Sky to pay for them (hence reducing their profit from Irish subscribers).

They could' of course, increase the subscriptions to pay for them, but must assume that they'd lose more subscribers because of the increase, than gain because they're available on the EPG.

When Saorsat kicks off, no-one in Britain will be able to watch RTE etc for free, and yet many here expect to be able to watch all the British programming, via Sky sub or FTA. What's the problem? Get Freesat+ and ditch Sky, save money!
The Freesat HD boxes will probably be capable of receiving Saorsat in Ireland,as well as Freesat, what more does anyone need:confused:

Or Sky lose enough Irish subscribers to warrant coughing up. Assuming the Beeb - through BBC Worldwide - allow it to happen.

If you are happy to ditch RTE etc pay a friend in the uk to pay for a sub there for you and have the card posted over methinks.

Thay have no reason for it to not happen. BBC Worldwide can receive money for their channels to appear on the EPG or they could carry on and let people watch for free with absolutely no return.

how will the freesat boxes handle the seperate dish which will be required for saorsat given it will be on a different satellite? can freesat boxes handle more than one dish(i'm pretty sure they can't)?

Eh, yes, but who is going to pay that money ? The BBC can't justify spending public money to have their channels listed on, what is after all, another country's EPG. The reason BBC1 and BBC2 NI are there is because of a deal with BBC Worldwide and Sky, who obviously felt having 1 and 2 made the take up of Sky more attractive. (It's along similar, though obviously not the same lines - no encryption - as the RTE on Sky deal.)

Also, I presume it's not an inconsiderable amount being paid at present for BBC 1 and 2 NI. Enough not to make it financially attractive for Sky to add to.

Sky should of course. I have always stated this. To expect the BBC to pay would be rather stupid.

Some of them can handle DiSEqC switching, so more than one satellite position.

    Well, Hello.
My name is Aidan and I live in an extremely rural area in the ROI, I have a freesat SD receiver and I get
    BBC1 NI
    BBC2 NI
    BBC1 Scotland
    BBC2 Scotland
    BBC ALBA
    BBC1 Wales
    BBC2 Wales
    BBC1 England
    BBC 2 England
    BBC London, Yorkshire, Oxford etc.
    BBC Three
    BBC Four
    BBC News Channel
    BBC Parliament
    CBeebies!
    CBBC and so on...
    That's only some BBC channels.
Also I would like to add freesat is growing all the time , adding more channels. Also I think it's adding more HD channels aswell.
I would like to add that the quality of these channels are superb for SD.
I have a SD box you will get all the other HD channels with the HD box. I shall be purshing a HD freesat receiver soon because I will be able to get new HD channels when they add them! Also with the HD receiver you can also use BBC iPlayer.
    Aidan!.
