TopNotch I won't get upset if it doesn't work out because I know we have tried our best. As I said earlier we are still in talks with the companies. We are trying to sort it which is more than I can say for most people

to be honest most people would shut down that stretch as the bus is a far better service cheaper and usually on time and most likely costs the taxpayers a lot less than some pipe dream of a railway.

The bus was twice the price until last week and still takes 30 minutes longer and has dodgy punctuality. The Waterford Rosslare train rarely if ever was late probably one of the most punctual in the country

Bus Eireann were forced under contract to reduce its fares to be no more than the rail fares

I was talking about Rosslare to Dublin busses competing with the train

P.S. if you want to embed a Youtube video on boards:
    Take the URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY0WxgSXdEE&ob=av3e
Copy the bit after watch?v= http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY0WxgSXdEE&ob=av3e
Put that between the Youtube tags:

Thanks Chris - found this info very useful ! Can posted Jpeg images be brought up directly on screen also, rather than as a link ?

And would it be worth stickying this type of info so it can be referenced easily?

To insert a JPEG, get the link to the JPEG and then put the image tags at either side.

    link to image.jpg

I'm sure this is detailed in the main boards FAQ, so we wouldn't be stickying it here.

Just trying to catch up with the digital generation - thanks for the info ! :)

Shutting down the Rosslare-Dublin line would be ridiculous. Although the timetable is far from perfect, loadings generally seem to be quite good, so much that the 16:30 Dublin-Wexford was originally worked by a 22000 3 car set but had to be changed to a 29000 to give greater (standing rather than seat) capacity. The 7:50 Rosslare-Dublin had complaints overcrowding recently. None of this sounds like the line is a candidate for closure. Just becasue theres a frequent bus service doesn't mean the line is suddenly going to die. Similarly the service frequency on the Dublin-Belfast bus is as good, yet that line does well in numbers too, even after the Malahide debacle.

That said I'm sure Rosslare-Dublin could do with a better timetable.

As for the bus service being cheaper I understand most Rosslare line rail tickets are on the day saver scheme which means in many cases fares are cheaper than the bus.

as with all the commuter services on that line, most passengers get off at Bray and Greystones.

There have been reports of the 7:50 Rosslare-Dublin being standing room only after Wicklow. I know someone from Arklow who gets one of the earlier services into Dublin who claims there are usually people standing after Greystones. This indicates that the above is not neccessarily true.

+1.......closure would be ridiculous indeed. This railway line is in a category of its own from a scenic point of view. Some of its unique features, in the Wexford area, are shown by these pics from the 'Sea Breeze' trip 09.

A view from the train of the quays in Wexford - almost surreal - cars and train alongside each other.
Next the Crescent Quay as viewed from the train.
Then Rosslare Strand Station and a view across the Slaney.

It's mad seeing trains crawling at 5 mph along Wexford Quay right beside the road. :D

it's a bit mad alright and slow but it's one of those oddities that I think is worth keeping. Its a fairly unique situation I'd say

Yep, unlikely to be something that could be changed anyway. Can't fence it off as it would block access to the quay, and relocating it is a no-no.

How long before this turns to this? :(

The price of that Rosslare development should have been the building of an overbridge and the elimination of the LC. One less gatekeeper for IE to have paid these last few years. But Wexford County Council didn't take the long view...

The maddening thing about looking at lines like Patrickswell is that IE wouldn't even be upfront and lift the line - even if the panels couldn't be laid elsewhere they could have been sent to scrap back when metal prices were crazy. Instead there's just an alignment mouldering and rusting.

What are you aims / hopes if you do establish a crp on the Goery - Rosslare section?

since you have a business plan you obviously know what rolling stock will be used by company 1. without giving too much away will this be sourced in Ireland or abroad?

This is excellent news for Save the Rail to even have gotten this far. It goes to show what a little people power and some hard work can do :)

I appreciate the sheer doggedness, but you are not coming up in a Company Search on the Companies Registration Office page..

Check again, in the CRO we signed off on all the papers last week and have sent everything in.

We aim to improve services on this line, for example we are in talks to have more train services, trains to meet the ferries, catering trolley on all services and proper information for the public.

they have stated it can be sourced both in and out of Ireland, which they choose will depend, i presume, on the best price they get

How about affordable catering, 1st class, longer trains, Fastrack, and trains meeting ferries?

    AS STATED ABOVE:

Trains meeting ferries, catering trolley on all services (to be fair the prices on the trolley are reaasonable) rather than longer trains we are trying for more services..............

I disagree about prices on the catering trolley - if you consider €1.60 for a can of minerals, €5.65 for a can of lager or €4.99 for a sandwich reasonable you're earning too much money. 1st class??? i.e. somewhere quiet to relax or get a bit of work done? Longer trains so that you don't have people standing on top of you from Wicklow northbound (sometimes Arklow)! A civilised waiting area in Connolly - out on platform 5 - I have suggested it to Dick Fearn numerous times but I would get more satisfaction from talking to my toes. I wish you luck but would not be remotely optimistic that anything will be achieved until CIE/IE is wound up.

The CRO don't always get everything online that quickly....give them a chance!
