Just bought some bottles of Jennings Sneck Lifter from Redmonds as part of 4 for 10 deal, anyone tried it before, I'd never heard of it?

Got a delivery of 14 different beers from drinkstore this afternoon. This evening I tried Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale & Anchor Liberty Ale. Both incredibly nice. Hard to chose between the two.

Had a couple of them in The Abbot's the other night.
    Nice stuff.

I was in Berlin at the weekend, and had dinner and a number of beers in the Weihenstephaner restaurant in the Hackescher Markt. Particularly enjoyed the Dunkel and the fest beer.

A similar sweet flavour and a bit heavy but better than the cans of larger they usually sell.

That would of been a bonus all right but happy enough with my Duvel glasses and I also have a couple of unmarked chalice style glasses.

So just back from Bratislava and what I've been drinking is mostly

Zlaty Bazant - It's decent without being spectacular.
Zlaty Bazant Tmave - It's a dark beer and I quite liked it although it got a bit sweet after having a few of them.
Kelt - Didn't think much of this although the GF liked it.
Krusovice - It was drinkable but not great.

I also found a Belgian Beer bar (Cafe de Zwaan) which has a very good selection of belgian beers and in there had

Delirium Tremens - Lovely. It's been on my list to try for a while and I'll definitely be getting it here
Delirium Nocturnum - It was nice but I felt it had almost too much going on to enjoy it properly.
Gulden Draak - This was very nice. Not quite as nice as the Delirium Tremens but very tasty
Tripel Karmeliet - Found this a bit sweet for my taste but still a good beer

Had a bottle of St. Peter's stout last night, lovely taste to it but I'm pretty sure it cost me €3.99 a bottle so probably won't be buying it again. http://www.stpetersbrewery.co.uk/

    Currently Drinking Shepherd Neame's

    Autumn Blaze

Not bad at all compared to some of their other stuff. A bit of Hoppiness and the roasted and Bitter description on the bottle is spot on too. So far the best Shepherd Neame I've come across but that is not a great boast. Think I'll go back for a few moer of these though.

Will be sampling the "Tapping the Admiral" later

I was blown away by Brewdog's 5AM Saint, iconoclastic amber beer.
These guys seem to be able to do no wrong these days.

I wasn't crazy about their beers to start with and now I love them.

    Either:
    a. I've gotten accustomed to their taste and I now like them.
    b. Their beer has improved
    c. The first beers I tasted were a little young in the bottle but now they're releasing them a little more mature.

I really have no idea which but think their beers are better made with each batch!

Fuller's Golden Pride last night - fantastic rich sweet strong (8.5%) English ale. Described as close to barley wine by some (not familiar with that myself).

Brooklyn's East India Pale Ale the night before - possibly underwhelming on its own, but very nice with some Indian food! Maybe a good "session"/party beer too (like their "lager" that was actually a hoppy ale, according to my taste-buds...).

Your poor taste-buds have been starved of proper lager, 'cos that's what they're supposed to taste like ;)

Got a few bottles of Avalanche by Fyne Ales of Scotland in Devaney's , Dundrum last night, a tasty ale of medium hopiness, also got a few bottles of Hofbrau Original which I hadn't tasted before either, its a very decent lager, would love to see it available in bars.

I'm fairly sure any beer-specialist would have it. The Bull & Castle has had it on special in the past.

    Hi Beernut,

I should have said in regular bars, when I'm in Bull and Castle there are so many good beers to choose from I wouldn't necessarily buy it, Budvar tends to be the only decent beer in regular bars if you don't drink Miller/Coors/Budweiser so it would be great to have a few more quality lagers available.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 12,122 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

It sure would. Bear in mind that every time you settle for a crappy one you're making that less likely to happen.

Well had a few drinks this week in London. But tonight drinking Hobgoblin from a can!
Last night had a few Deuchers IPA which was great from the cask.

Pint of Galway Hooker in the Bierhaus, Cork on Wed. night (a fine, refreshing, hoppy ale), followed by a Cooper's Sparkling Ale at home with dinner (like a strongish fizzier English ale).

Last night - Affligem Blonde (easy-going Belgian ale) with dinner and afterwards a Guinness Foreign Extra (Guinness' finest - strong, chocolatey, expresso-ish, roasted-malty - lots going on but smooth and all nicely balanced - close to what the original "stout porter" might have tasted like? Maybe it's sweeter than the Irish dry style? Hopefully Beer Nut will enlighten/out-geek me here ;)), with some strong dark chocolate afterwards - mmmm... :pac:

    All fine beers imho :).

Got it in one! Guinness brewing records only go back to about 1800, with Foreign Extra showing up in 1824, but they show that from there up to 1917 Foreign Extra and Extra Stout (aka Double Stout: the "stout porter") were brewed to the same gravity: about 1.070 - 1.080, for 7-8% ABV. I'd say the only real difference was hopping: Foreign Extra would have got a few handfuls more for preservation purposes. With the war and the massive tax hikes, beer gravities plummeted throughout the UK and never recovered. Guinness Extra Stout dropped straight away to under 5% and has been hovering around the 4-5% ABV range ever since, but Foreign Extra stayed exactly where it was at 7-7.5% ABV. It's a living fossil of a beer. And damn tasty.

IMO Special Export (the 8% ABV version made for the Low Countries) is slightly better, but not by much. Not enough to pay extra for it in Ireland when you can saunter into the Storehouse and pick up Foreign Extra for €2 a go.

Quite off topic, but saunter is a far underutilised word!
I raise my glass of Cider (Cidre Doux du Coteaux Nantais) to you.

It most certainly is. It's also used slightly ironically as what you actually have to do is go up to the admissions barrier and tell them "I only want to go to the shop" so they'll let you through without a ticket. Last time I did this the salesperson from whom I bought the beer had difficulty accepting that I actually liked the taste of Foreign Extra, as she herself hated it. Behold the marketing power of Diageo!

    :D

Reminds me I must saunter into the shop 50 metres away and get some Special Export!
