You have to look at it in context. The 'Supertrain' branding was a 1970s concept, when the mk2 carriages were brand new and certainly were 'super' compared to the rest of the carriages then, locos were painted to match and the 071s were only brought in 1976. Even now the 071s seem to be a pretty good loco for their 30+ years.

i always thougt ORANGE was a strange choice....id miss the old 001s though :-(

I once saw a piece (can't remember why it was on) on the news about the person who came up with the livery; apparently were inspired by their cat! How true that is I don't know.

I think the Supertrain livery looked fantastic on a 001 with Mk2s, lined up really well. But yes, the new Mk2s in the 70s were amazing compared to some of the rag-bag coaches still trundling about back then.

In the interests of maybe adding a few photos to relevant threads, I intend shortly to take a few pics, starting with the 'Enterprise'. I thought Connolly would be a good place, as there is bound to be a variety of trains and I can catch a Dart in handily enough. What's the story about hanging around there for an hour or so, security wise etc ? Any other tips ?
Hopefully there may be a 071 there too ! :)

I've done it a few times for about an hour or so. Never had any trouble.

A recent RPSI bulletin included this very interesting YouTube clip by Ciaran Cooney, from the October Best of Both railtour. Particularly like the Newcomen Jct section, and the turbo 'sounds' at Enfield!!! :)

Given the ride problems do we want to know how bouncy they'd get at 200km/h? :D

Thanks, glad you like it! (Yes as the username implies I created www.eiretrains.com as well as the videos).

Here is the latest one, this time of loco No.082.

I saw 081 in Navan today, WOOHOO! I asked yerman at the level crossing what time they go by, he said they usually leave the mine at half 12 everyday. I'd pay E500 to get a go in a GM loco!

Get a pair of overalls and an IR high visibility jacket and pose as an IR maintenance employee, you might be able to bum a lift off an engine driver somewhere where they are carrying out track repairs. :P

I suppose "commuting & transport" is a broad reference for a forum, but this kind of stuff really leaves me cold. Apologies.

Well we tried to get a dedicated railway enthusiasts forum but there wasn't enough interest.

Well, the thread is titled '071 class' which refers to a popular diesel locomotive. Locomotives play a primary part in rail transport, so what is the problem with such discussions ?

They don't play a part in modern day rail transport in Ireland anymore? So this is effectively a history lesson and pointless. By all means spot your trains and enjoy yesteryear. Ive nothing against it, but I'm allowed question it.

The two "premier" services on the rail network here use 201 class locomotives (Dublin->Cork and ->Belfast).

The 071 class in question does pretty much all our limited rail freight.

Yes indeed you are allowed to question it, but transport has a past, a present and a future and IMO if the discussion here is irksome to some, there is no obligation to engage. Why don't you start a thread of your own, with subject matter that interests you ?

I am seeing too many people calling history lessons in particular "pointless". That is a dangerous mindset.

When I saw the name of this forum, it was called "Commuting and Transport", with no caveat or limitation as to what is being transported. More than people are transported. If the 071-class JT22CW locomotive is still moving goods, it is transporting things. This is contemporary and not (yet) a part of history.

Not to mention that track laying and so on would get pretty dicey in some parts of the network without 071s now that the 1x1s are basically withdrawn (with the except of some shunting) and the 201s are too heavy to go everywhere.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

im sure a railfan section would be popular, if only with the anti-trainspotter fraternity...:D

Must be some really light rails and infrastructure, if 18.7 tonnes per axle is too heavy. (1X1s and 071s were/are 16.8 tonnes per axle. Interestingly enough, the GSR's 800 class had 17 tonnes on each axle, with adhesive weight of 51.2 tonnes.)
