    Taking over the AIB, crikey!
Will that cost us too, if so how much approx? Serious question.

Why in gods name pay 3 Billion for something worth 600 Million!

Never got the Collins hero worship.

No - the saddest day since Collins was shot was when Ireland were beaten by France in the World Cup playoffs.

I only stopped crying last week.

It is not what it will cost but the liabilities coming with it. The AIB was a far bigger bank with bigger problems than Anglo Irish Bank.

Ireland as a nation has died tonight, expropriation is just around the corner and tomorrow people will awake to the stark reality of just how bad things are.

    Thats scaremongering.
Everyones money is state guaranteed up to a certain figure.
    (Which I think is €100,000)

Much better persons who are deeper into these financial areas should be able to confirm the exact figure.

I'm leaving my accounts with the AIB right where they are. I'm not worried.

The state itself is bankrupt and can't guarantee sh1t. The safest place for money is in an offshore bank now.

Would you care to enlighten us all as to how that will happen?

Do you not realise that the country already owns a 19% share in AIB?

At the end of the day ask yourselves, what is money worth if you don't trust it!

When the trust in money had evaporated the numbers mean nothing.

No, the state is not officially bankrupt yet, we are in hock certainly - there is a difference.

In fairness in any best case scenario the Gov will end up owning above 70% of AIB.... This is old news for anyone in the know...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,007 ✭✭✭Phill Ewinn

David McWilliams on VB, it has been leaked to the FT this evenin that the gov have purchased 70% of AIB for €3bilIion! AIB only worth 600m!!

On twitter. What did the gov spend? 6.45am tomorrow news will out.

If the state is going to own a majority share in the bank, wouldn't that make deposits more, not less, safe?

    ROLMFAO

How do you see that working?

This is Ireland's largest internet forum.

I do remember the queues of people on a bank run for Northern Rock after Liveline. Where there was no issue at all.
Boards.ie has the potential to access more people then RTÉ radio, well purely because hundreds of thousands of office workers have access to it during office hours but not that many listen to radio in work.

So all I'd say is if an OP is going to start a hysterical thread then better have their facts right.
And not like that thread a few weeks back "my mate works in BOI and there are queues of people withdrawing what they have". I'm paraphrasing there.
    That's how you start panic

Me, I have my money in AIB and it's safe there.
And the rest in Rabobank, guranteed by the Dutch Central Bank.
I opened that account six years ago when Rabobank had best saver interest rates, now they are terrible.

    About two-fiddy.

Most people knew that AIB needed a further €3bn in capital, all they've done here is a share swap.

Day to day banking will carry on BAU, just as it would have done two years ago before the banksters scared the government shítless into giving them all our taxes for the next decade or so.

600 million won't recap Aib.... The gov is paying 3 billion to recap and taking a 70% share. Regards if they bought Aib at Market cost they would still have to recap the bank.

The most telling five words from that VB programme (McWilliams):

    Anglo is not a bank

What need you, being come to sense,
But fumble in a greasy till
And add the halfpence to the pence
And prayer to shivering prayer, until
    You have dried the marrow from the bone;
    For men were born to pray and save;
    Romantic Ireland's dead and gone,
It's with O'Leary in the grave.

Yet they were of a different kind,
The names that stilled your childish play,
They have gone about the world like wind,
But little time had they to pray
For whom the hangman's rope was spun,
And what, God help us, could they save?
    Romantic Ireland's dead and gone,
It's with O'Leary in the grave.

Was it for this the wild geese spread
    The grey wing upon every tide;
For this that all that blood was shed,
    For this Edward Fitzgerald died,
And Robert Emmet and Wolfe Tone,
All that delirium of the brave?
    Romantic Ireland's dead and gone,
It's with O'Leary in the grave.

Yet could we turn the years again,
And call those exiles as they were
In all their loneliness and pain,
    You'd cry `Some woman's yellow hair
    Has maddened every mother's son':
They weighed so lightly what they gave.
But let them be, they're dead and gone,
They're with O'Leary in the grave.
