    Probably not many.

Although I have done some half-baked online research into the topic before, and it seems harmless enough. It's almost like a very tongue-in-cheek parody religion.

I was surprised to find that quite a few guys on here were into Levey Satanism before. Not my cup of tea at all...the dark lord and all that jazz kinda missed me by when I was young - like an obscure Finnish rock back he was.

Fair enough, I am not very au fait with the ins and out of satanism.

As far as I understood, it was 'do as you will' kind of creed unlike the wiccan crede of 'do as you will as long at its harms none', and there was actual worship of deities in the form of Lucifer and stuff going on.

But hey. What do I know? Please enlighten me

Just the fella you want to bring home to MammyAnton_LaVey_photo.jpg

    Satan.

    Lemme think.

Isn't he that reddish guy with the horns and fork and smoking shoes that causes all the woe in the world?

If so, then you're in the wrong forum -- I think they've more time for him here.

As someone who went through their adolescence listening almost exclusively to metal and has been well immersed in the subculture, there is/was a massive element of anti-religious and sometimes, pro-satan sentiment or whatever present -- from the overall image and aesthetic of Black Metal (the corpse paint & upside-down crosses) to your average run-of-the-mill bands who just limit it to discussing some topics in their lyrics.

Of course, looking back now, I can see it's just something that young people or teenagers happen to identify with, along with all the other forms of anti-conformity. To be honest, I find the whole Satanism stuff pretty damn cheesy. Bands like Akercocke, Deicide, et al. might write decent music, but what they write about is nothing more than poetic fiction which speaks to impressionable teenagers, who are looking to identify with something anti-mainstream.

As you mentioned, it also becomes something teenagers like to use as a 'shock value' on certain others. “I'm a Satanist; your Christian beliefs are inferior to mine!” etc etc. Just like with the people who identify as being part of the counterculture; Satanism is just another set of gestures that provides entertainment for the rebels.

To label oneself as a “Satanist”, is to me, a little superfluous. What particular values does Satanism espouse that aren't followed by plenty of people already? I personally see it as self-indulgent entertainment. Harmless stuff, I guess. We were all young once.

Black metal hasn't influenced me most black promotes paganism and theistic Satanism.
I don't tell anyone apart from people on the net "hey im a Satanist are you shocked?, yeah? well job well done then"

I'm not a card carrying member, but yes I find their philosophy not entirely at odds with my own. I always thought there was a certain irony to joining an organisation founded upon individualism.

La Vey Satanism can be basically summarised as "Act however you like, just don't break the law." It is about pride, dignity, self-improvement and indulging that urge to be cruel to those who irritate you. There is a great deal of melodrama and showmanship to Satanism, but one must remember that they are very honest about that. They understand the psychological benefits of ritual and suspension of disbelief, they're just honest about their use of it, unlike theistic religions.

On occassion La Vey's writings can seem to be getting a little mystical, with reference to Satan as an extant primal force rather than a metaphor, or dark rituals having literal power. I've not read in sufficient detail to quite explain it, but I would image it is just an example of the afformentioned melodrama.

Yes I wear black pretty much all the time. I also have a fondness for long coats, but only because cloaks are no longer popular. Those classy ones with a metal clasp at the nape would be ideal. Alas for long dead fashions.

This is the current leader of The Church of Satan, Peter Gilmore. No it's not Orson Welles. La Vey Satanism is a pretty complex philosophical, moral and social system, an accurate grasp of which I would say is beyond the majority of teenagers. If you think we are talking about the juvenile theistic Satanism theatrically deployed by metal bands then I'm afraid the thread topic has gone a little over your head.

Nope, that's The Devil. La Vey Satanism argues that Satan is man's desire to assert his pride, will and independence, the antagonist of the repressive, cowardly and hypocritical faiths of the world. It transcends individual representations of it in the various religions. Satanism is far more appropriate here than in Christianity forum, as it is explicitly non-theistic.

Philosophical Satanism does exist, it's called capitalism/ me feiners. :pac:
Anywho, it's a pretty redundant pseudo philosophy/religion. He just plagarised aload of stuff from Nietzsche and added some silly histrionic rituals.
I am not a philosophical Satanist, mainly because if everyone adhered to its principles society would fall apart. The current state of this country is a prime example of this.

You're "your own brand" of a secret oathbound religion, are you? Are you even old enough to be a wiccan?

    sigh

Guessed as much. My wife is a Wiccan and yes we do have a mutual "Do not rant at each other" policy. At times I think shes nuts and she thinks Im a Vulcan . Shes quite well known in 'those circles' and has to spend much of her time fending off teenagers who want to latch onto her to piss off their parents. Wicca for all its nuttyness is a very solitary and gentle system/ belief/ what ever.

Nope, not at all. Being a fan of the band Akercocke (who are all fully grown adult men and identify themselves as Satanists) I do understand it is considered a complex philosophy by its followers; a code to live by, and many probably resent the fact that it has been misrepresented by some particular metal bands with a penchant for the melodramatic and theatrical.

Be that as it may, I still see it as a redundant pseudo-philosophy; entertainment for the rebel culture who want to differentiate from mainstream beliefs, identity, etc. Nothing wrong with that, but like you said, ironic that followers would join an organisation based on individualism, and label themselves as such. Do Satanists meet up and compare notes from the The Satanic Bible?

But hey, to each their own. I’m not knocking it as an art form, because the lyrics and iconography (pentegrams, etc) are all great themes in an artistic sense, where metal is known for focussing on darker subjects. For the same reasons, I can look at religious themed art and appreciate it too; I just don't have to buy into the whole package.

You weren't banned for mentioning satanism.

I find Satanism of any kind to be completely naff.

LaVey satanism isnt a religion technically, but i do find it quite silly and selfish. Its not very original as it plagarises Crowley quite heavily with the 'do what though wilt' stuf' and the definition of magic being just 'doing stuff'. but it verges into the dumb when it gets to ritual magic.

It seems he took individualist and existentialist philosohpies and called it satanism just to attract attention. like catholicism its all style and no substance

    Not my bag baby.

Not meaning to offend anyone but dressing up in black with make-up looks silly in my eyes. Don't get me wrong, I would never judge the whole person by the way they dress. I just try to put it to one side and talk to the person behind the trench-coat and eye shadow.
