    Hi Aeil,

have a look back over this thread, some good info (including hills) in it. Basically, there's a bit of a hill upon leaving the Park at 9 or 10 miles, a sharp 50m hill around 17m, then a slow gradual hill along Clonskeagh, and the "worst" hill is at Roebuck Rd. Nothing is too bad though, its basically a flat course (if not pancake flat).

Thanks for the help guys.I had started this as a new thread and its been moved here so i hadnt even seen this thread. Its not that hill's scare me too much but i dont have a clue of the course and dont like running "blind".Im very excited,my first ever marathon, one of my life goals is to complete one.I might have overtrained for this because i got bad tendonitis a few weeks ago but back to full health now and cant wait:).Running is addictive:).

If you go to the marathon's facebook page, they have a video of the route taken from a motorbike (I think)

Hi Aiel, Here's a route profile I set up previously. It's the 2008 route (so slightly different start-finish) but the elevation profile is correct. Should give you an idea what you have ahead of you.

Am quite sure that this comes up all the time, but just a quick question for the pacers please. I'm aiming at sub 3.20 ( and that might be a push after 3.25 last year). Should I risk going with the 3.15 group and possibly blow up by going too fast for my own good, or try to pace myself?

My original plan would have been to ease in at 7.45 min miles for the first 2 or 3 and then go 7.30 for as long as I could. I'm now starting to wonder if a better approach would be to hang on to the pacers and get minutes in the bank for the hardship late on. Cheers.

Banking time is a really bad idea in the marathon. I liked your original plan much better.

Best way to run a marathon is steady all the way. If you feel capable of running 7:30 miles for the whole race, then certainly you should go with the 3:15 pacers (who'll be running about 7:27 miles). But if you were planning to run 7:30 miles, and expecting to blow up at some stage and start hanging on for the end, you're not running smart, and should start slower.

You should have a fair idea at this stage how your training is going, and what your chances are to "possibly blow up". Ideally you'd be pacing your run so this isn't a factor.

Cheers.

Diggy im not a pacer but face the exact same dilemma for Berlin marathon on 26th of this month.. Its a very difficult decision..

i've run 3 marathons to date and have run all 3 in negative splits ranging between 3 and 8 minutes.. Like u I go out conserative and gradually speed up..

My pb is 3.21..Im hoping for at least 3.15 in Berlin( if things go well I could b closer to 3.10 ) and after alot of thought have decided Im going to gamble and go out harder than i would usually b comfortable with..

I will let u know if it works or goes pearshaped in a couple of weeks:)

Cheers Liamo, do let me know how you get on and best of luck with the gamble :).

Ideally you'd be pacing your run so this isn't a factor.

cheers, I fully agree about running steady, I probably should have explained it better. I tend to find that if I start at 7.30 pace then I feel under pressure early and really struggle in my races. It takes me a ridiculous amount of time to get going. Once I'm well in my stride I do feel pretty confident of 7.30's all the way through. The 'blowing up' part referred to going at that pace prior to the easing in period, usually about 2 miles. Cheers for the advice.
Banking time is a really bad idea in the marathon. I liked your original plan much better.
Thanks TFB, was wondering if it was a silly thought alright.

Personally, I'd go for it, stay with the pacers from the off. I can't see how running at 20 secs faster per mile for the first two (instead of running two @7:45 pace), would affect your lactate levels or anything, especially since this is your PMP, and if you are comfortable with this pace, there's more to be gained by hanging on to the 3:15 pacers. Best of luck with it!

The pacers will struggle to hit exact pace for the first mile or two due to congestion, so these will likely be slower than target pace anyway (which is likely to be around 7:25/mile. Why don't you do 8-10 miles at 7:25/mile over the next few weeks and see how it feels? If it feels ok, then run with the 3:15 pacers, if it doesn't, then stick to your own pace. The pacers can't make you run faster than your achievable marathon pace (except for the last 400 yards!). They will keep your pace consistent, and maximize your chances of hitting your goal.

Finally registered for this and booked the hotel so no turning back at this stage.

Struggling a bit with training after a summer of 10k's and two weeks of R&R in Croatia - will be doing well to crack my target time of 3:29:59 but looking forward to the day and the weekend anyway.

Does anyone know if hotels are flexible re: early breakfast (around 6am) and late check-outs? Can't get the Tuesday off so have to head for home after the race

I emailed the hotel I'm in (Maldron Cardiff Lane) and asked about an early breakfast and they said it won't be a problem and have "dozens" of runners staying with them that weekend. I'd say most places will be decent enough about leaving cereal/fruit etc out for runners if they asked for it.

Hey Krusty, cheers for that. I'd forgotten about the congestion (have been doing smaller races this year). I'd really have little problem doing 7:25 min miles over anything up to about 15 miles, but I haven't trained at that pace for my LSR's so I suppose it's still unknown if that pace is achievable for the whole race.

I ran a stupid race last year and was in complete opposition to all the good advice I've received in the last 2 days. I ran the first 5 miles at 8 min/miles, then went up to 7:00 min miles till mile 23 where the arse fell out of my trousers and I shuffled over the line in around 3:26. As you said , the consistency of the pacers could well help me run a far smarter race. Cheers. :)

doin DCM nd it'll be my first marathon so have couple of queries bout the negative effect of doin the extra 6.2 miles and the positive effect of the race day marathon atmosphere and pace setters..
basically do these opposites balance each other out

also i'm lookin for guidance on target time from experienced marathoners not on mcmillan calculator.

    done my 3rd 10miler in 75mins,
my target half marathon is 1hr40mins
my first 16 miler in 2hr20mins nd 18miler in 2hr40mins
as ya can see my final miles really get the worse of me or is this normal for training runs
my target for DM is sub 4hrs but my secret goal is sub 3hr37mins cos thats what my friend got last year in his first marathon..
do ya think the latter time is achievable or will i run myself into the ground chasing this time. it's basically will i go wit 3:45 or4:00 group

Adriana Enough Numismatist - the plan is to run a consistent 8 minute mile pace throughout. There may be a +/- 10 second deviation for crowds at start and the hills etc. but apart from that its steady all the way.

do you take any calories on during long training runs. it may be a case that you are just running out of steam a little bit towards the end of these. personally i think its important during the race to be taking in 100 or so calories(ie a gel or energy drink) every 5 miles depending on your intensity of course, but if you dont start early on doing this, the dreaded bonk will creep up suddenly and you'll be draggin your knuckles in the last couple miles. i took a gel every 30 to 40 minutes last year and found it was just about right for me ( in saying that though i was hoping for a sub 3 run and missed it by a minute and a half) but everyone is different i suppose.
the positive atmosphere certainly will help your frame of mind but wont fuel ya if you have nothing left in the tank... hope this helps

Disregard what your friend can do. This has absolutely no bearing on what you can achieve and shouldn't be part of your motivation for your first marathon. Rather than looking at doing the extra 6.2 miles, I would advise you to look at your training strategy.
    16 miles in 2:20 is: 8:45/mile
    18 miles in 2:40 is: 8:53/mile
I presume you are going out fast, and slowing down as you spend more time on your feet. Your theoretical targets are: 4 hours (9:10/mile), 3:45 (8:36/mile) and 3:37 (8:17/mile). So you are probably heading out on your long run at a pace that is equal to, or faster than your planned race pace. You should consider running your long runs at a pace significantly slower than your planned race pace.

I would suggest that you run with the 4:00 pacers, and if you feel strong, then pick up the pace from 20 miles. Heading out with the 3:45 pacers you could blow-up at 16-18 miles, as per your previous long runs and struggle to the finish. So I would do the following:
    1) Forget about your friend's achievement
    2) Forget about running the distance in training (whose advise was this?)
    3) Run your long runs slower so that you are getting more time on your feet and run them at a consistent pace
    4) start with the 4:00 pacers
    5) Re-evaluate the training program/strategy you are following. Are you following a training program?

Remember: The pacers cannot make you run faster than the pace you have trained to/faster than your current ability. What they will provide is consistent pacing, so you are less likely to get your pacing strategy incorrect, thereby make it more likely that you will achieve your goal.

my preparation for LSRs is pretty lame..i jus carry money nd pop into garage every 8 miles or so to buy water/luco sport nd off i go again so that could be a big downfall

doin DCM nd it'll be my first marathon so have couple of queries bout the negative effect of doin the extra 6.2 miles and the positive effect of the race day marathon atmosphere and pace setters..
basically do these opposites balance each other out

also i'm lookin for guidance on target time from experienced marathoners not on mcmillan calculator.

    done my 3rd 10miler in 75mins,
my target half marathon is 1hr40mins
my first 16 miler in 2hr20mins nd 18miler in 2hr40mins
as ya can see my final miles really get the worse of me or is this normal for training runs
my target for DM is sub 4hrs but my secret goal is sub 3hr37mins cos thats what my friend got last year in his first marathon..
do ya think the latter time is achievable or will i run myself into the ground chasing this time. it's basically will i go wit 3:45 or4:00 group

Ardsberg, you haven't really given enough info (weekly mileage, general fitness before you began the program etc etc) for someone to give you a reliable prediction but on the basis of what you have said I'll give you my thoughts for what they are worth although I would stress that there are a lot of good coaches on boards and I am not one of them! As you will probably already know a lot of programs suggest that you should run your LSR's at about 1 minute per mile slower than goal pace which in your case would indicate a goal pace of 8min/mile - 3:30 marathon. I however think a minute is too much to try and take off your LSR pace especially when you are adding on 6 miles. Your tempo runs and half marathon time if you manage it would certainly point to a sub 3:40 marathon at some point in you running career however I always hate to think of anyone potentially setting themselves up for a disappointment especially on their first marathon . A target time of 8:37, which corresponds to 8:12 min/mile based on 26.5 miles, is a serious clip. Personally speaking I really think your focus should be on your own race and not that of your friend and in that respect I would prefer to see you targeting a 3:45 at best. I firmly believe that any marathon completed is a good marathon and a sub 4 hour marathon is a particularly good one especially for a first marathon. Although I think it is not unreasonable of you to think you could keep up with a 3:45 pacer certainly for a good portion of the race I do say this with a word of caution as I know nothing about you but on the other hand you have some good runs done and you have plenty of time to bang in two or three twenty milers. The most important thing is that you enjoy it (safely) and that you don't allow an unnecessary disappointment to spoil the experience. The nutrition comment is also very important. If you are not already using them you should find a gel that agrees with you and consider using as many as one every four or five miles if you can stomach them. Krusty Clowns advice is good advise and raises a valid concern about the fact that you slow down towards the end of your long run although hopefully this will improve with a few more long runs. The danger of a 3:45 pace is that you risk a blow out which is horrible when it happens however if you stick to the the three thirds rule hopefully you wont go too far wrong. Basically you should feel like you are holding yourself back for the first third, then running at a steady but comfortable pace for the second third and so being able to take the strain of the final third without a significant drop in pace. By the way just to explain this strategy it doesn't mean you run three different paces but rather you try and pick a pace that you can more or less maintain throughout. Post your 20 mile reports over the next few weeks and you might get some more guidance. I'd be interested to follow your progress.
BTW, I'm doing my twelvth marathon in Dublin and would take your hand off for a sub 3:40 which in my case would be a PB.

Anyone ever done training runs on the DCM route between Chapelizod Gate and Milltown?
Am planning to do this early enough tomorrow morning, I'd assume that'd be a better option than during the day?
Is the traffic much heavier around Crumlin/Walkinstown areas later in the day?

I often do it between Chapelizod and Terenure, Sunday's are obviously much quieter and easier to do it but if you're doing it before 9am you should be ok traffic from Rialto onwards can be pretty heavy.

Only just realised that I'd not posted here so far.

Onto the most important issues though, does anyone know what pub we're going to afterwards yet? Want to see if I can find a hotel that's not too far away so as not to overwork my legs too much afterwards.

Pacers are in the Conrad again, so I'd guess the hotel bar?

Post your 20 mile reports over the next few weeks and you might get some more guidance. I'd be interested to follow your progress.
BTW, I'm doing my twelvth marathon in Dublin and would take your hand off for a sub 3:40 which in my case would be a PB.

Done my 20miler in 3hrs5mins.. 2 10mile routes at exactly 1hr30mins wit 5min break in between to change top(got pissed on) nd take on fluids/calories..felt good nd was in line wit my pace i planned..few hills that were killer but that shud stand to me..
i'll see how the half marathon goes nd i'll know how i stand then

Hoe about a bar with a bit of life in it? Kehoes? O'Donoghues? Somewhere like that?

Market Bar? Nice and roomy, plus people can eat (very tasty tapas) if they feel like it. I know I'll want to stuff my gob a few hours after the race!

I approve of both of those suggestions, Market Bar gets my vote as it does food and has loads of room. Bit more of a trek from the finish line though.

I'd have thought that any bar full of sweaty post-marathoners (only some showered pacers!) will have plenty of 'life' in it.
I vote for anywhere with seats (and food?), not too far from the finish line. I suppose at that time of day things won't be crowded anyway. An early decision is good, means people are less likely to get caught up in other arrangements.

How about this? Give it to Sunday evening for people to post suggestions, then do a poll?
