That looks like the one I have seen before.

That logo was used in the Saorview epg green button test earlier this summer. (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055933065)

Or a plausible logo. I didn't realise till I read the edit that the logo was IN the screen shot. So I went back to LARGE image Byte scanned and cleaned up the screen part. It's unlikely Walker or the Box supplier is customising the EPG graphics. So people with MHEG5 on DTT need to keep an eye out to see does a logo appear on that EPG as shown.

The logo is embedded in the software on that particular box I would imagine. Its not an MHEG5 generated menu. That is standard EPG data being collected from EIT.

Probably is a modified 1040 CI from Vestel.

    Thanks STB.
I have updated my blog post to reflect those thoughts. I can't find any DTT boxes on Vestel's sites, but I see there are re-badges to brands known locally in UK and Italy, since at least 2007 for some PVRs with HDMI.
The on screen EPG shot can also be entirely custom with manufacturers own design of logo, using ordinary DVB information and nothing to do with any RTENL graphics or MHEG5.

saorview.com was registered about a week after Apogee suggested Saorview as a possible name for the DTT service. On the ball there Paul ;).

saorview.org, saorview.net saorview.info, saorview.biz were registered on the 19th Jan less than an hour after I started this thread, that was fast

    saorview.tv, saorview.me, saorview.tel, saorviewtv.ie, saorviewtv.com, saorsat.ie, saorsat.com, are all registered to RTÉ .

I am surprised someone was able to register saorview.ie, I thought you had to verify your company name for the ie domain.

They probably don't need it now as the service is likely to be called SaorviewTV based on the LCN names in Digital Aertel TV schedule pages Saorview TV 1 - RTÉ1, Saorview TV 2 - RTÉ2 etc. and that new logo.

I thought they were calling it Saorview not SaorView TV, Saorview TV sounds rather kitsch, and Hiberno like the way most Irish people call Sky, Sky TV, still at least they had the imagination to avoid using the word Freeview and the confusion it would create.

It's still harder than .com or .net
board.ie had to have a company first.
for techtir.ie the process was simpler.

    This from .iedr
    Category 11: Discretionary Name

    Requirements:
    ...
    • Where a company or a business applies for a name that relates to a product or service that is not yet in the public domain, the applicant must submit information showing that they have invested significant time, effort, or resources in the product or service that directly relates to the proposed domain name.
    ...
    • Where the applicant is a natural person: Together with information showing their claim to the proposed domain name, non-trading individuals applying under the discretionary name category must provide adequate documentary evidence confirming their identity. Acceptable documentation would include a copy of the applicant's passport, birth certificate, driver's license or Irish revenue/social welfare document showing PPS number.

With the renewal date for saorview.ie being Jun 2011, could it have been registered maybe Jun 2009 by an agent for RTÉ - Thomas O'Reilly (not wanting to attract unnecessary attention or distract during the commercial discussion process)? Maybe RTÉ were working on this backup plan in parallel with the slow commercial DTT negotations and following the failure of the 8 month long Boxer talks. We first publically find out about Saorview six months later (last Jan) with the deal done with Teracom on certification.

The first two Saorview logos we are aware of don't include the word "TV". The lastest logo appears to be Saorview TV with iedr renewal for the domain next Jul, could have been registered this Jul (about the time of the Joint Committee discussion with RTÉ), could be part of the revised plan? The Saorsat domain renewal is next June, possibly registered this June just before (?) the revised DTT and satellite plan was submitted to the Dept for approval and before anyone could get to cyber-squat.

I hope that has cleared things up. :D

It was then. But might not be now. Time will tell. When the official info campain starts. That original one hasn't enough Joss Sticks and Whale song. Probably an in house quickie till a Graphic Designer was found and paid a five figure sum for a suite of logo-types and styles.

RTÉ's graphics department are well capable. Current RTÉ Two idents look great.

No in house. They did have a competition for the contract all the same

not sure if this graphic designer tried for the contract but here's some mocks.

Given how Irish Domain Name issues are nearly strictest in World, cybersquatting isn't going to give you any money on a .ie for sure!

Maybe they they did own it all along and following last week's discussion they revealed it's true ownership or did the discussion prompt RTÉ to get it transferred to them?

Locked means it's harder to move it. Helps prevent cybertheft.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,493 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

    Found this on .iedr.
    34. My domain has a status of “Active - Locked”. What does this mean?

If your domain name is 'Locked' this simply means that it is not available to be transferred to another billing contact during the 'locking' period. It does not mean that your domain is unavailable and you are free to make amendments to your DNS as you wish.

The domain will become unlocked when the IEDR issues an invoice to your Registrar for the domain and the fee has been paid (Invoices are issued on a monthly basis).

It is perfectly normal for newly registered/recently transferred domains to have a 'Locked' status, this is due to the IEDR's billing cycle.

    Hi
I have just been to the IFA show in Berlin where the last Saorview logo featured in the Cush's earlier post was shown in connection with a pretty basic looking Saorview (and also labelled on a poster as Soarview) set top box. There was no sign of a corresponding DVR - they had very many DVR's for a wide range of European DVB-T(2) providers, many with hybrid IPTV offerings. Unfortunately I didn't have a camera with me, nor was there any printed material available.

    Vestel showing Saorview receiver

Could it be the Walker receiver discussed here, watty mentioned here there were no DTT receivers on their website recently.

Did it look like the receiver in this post and here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,460 ✭✭✭✭watty

Vestel make/made many Black Diamond, Bush and other well known brands.
(See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vestel). However while their website shows no set-boxes of any kind.http://www.vestel.com.tr/foreigntrade/index.html, many well known brand Freeview (UK DTT) setbox and PVR are made by Vestel.

I don't know why I can't find Vestel DTT boxes on a Vestel site. They definately make them. But possibly only other people's badges like HTC used to do with phones.

Yes- Watty that was the logo used. The "Soarview" was in some blurb hanging overhead the box. Apparently this box is also approved for the DVB-T serivce commencing soon in New Zealand.

It actually looked a lot plainer than the box in the posts. Really sorry that I didn't have a camera with me.
