    Hi,
I'm starting science in september, I'm thinking of doing chem101(physical chemistry) as I don't want to major in chemistry later. Is this difficult? Like, what would be the most difficult topic wavefunction equations ,paulis exclusion principle etc?

What do I need to buy for the labs, just safety glasses and a coat? How much are the lab-coats please?

Also I want to get a locker, what date does everyone que up,and do I need to wait until after registration? I want to get one in the science building...

    Thanks for the replies :P

It's difficult enough but it's easy to do well in should you put in some work.

Lab coats are roughly €30 you will need a howie one which buttons across your chest as opposed to a doctors style one.

Lockers are given out on the first day of lectures. Demands is very high so you'd want to queue up as early as 8am to get a good one. It's worth it though as you get to keep it for 2 years (even more unofficially) I did that last year and have mine kept aside for this year.

Just a quick (possibly silly) question.

I know the entry requirements for the course but are there any specific entry requirements for the individual subjects?
Like would you need more than a HD3/0C3 in Maths to take the full maths subject in first year?

No, but it's recommended that you'd have taken HL maths in the leaving to be able for full maths. I go an A1 in OL in the leaving, thought I'd give full maths a go but switched to maths methods after 2 or 3 weeks.

Well I'm going into first year science again but I won't be doing poxy maths so all should be good!

I mainly want to do Biology but Chemistry seems pretty much essential to give you most options. I'm not sure how difficult Chemistry will be though.

It's doable if you put the work into the labs and the MCQ's. I went into both exams with 33% this year and got a high 2.1 and a 1st between the two papers just by paying attention.

I didn't do chemistry for the LC and I managed fine after a little hard work. Congrats everyone, hope you all love the course!

If any of the incoming first years need a hand with picking modules don't hesitate to send us a pm. It can be a little confusing but I've been in your shoes.

Ah right, that's grand. I did HL for the leaving alright, just didn't do as well as I'd hoped.

Also, for all of your delectation because it's a CHHOOOOON.

Hey, starting in Sept. also, just wondering what the story is with taking Maths, as in, do I have to take it? I got an A1 in Ordinary, having dropped down from Higher in April..

Would appreciate if someone would PM me :) Thanks!

Full maths could be tough, but there's no harm in giving it a go. If you find it too hard after a few weeks you can switch to Maths Methods which you should pass easily with an OL A1. :)

Do you have to take a certain amount Maths? Was hoping I could just do Physics Chem and Bio..

Maths methods,at least, is necessary for certain modules in second year as far as I know..I remember I wasn't able to do geography :(

What were the points for the course this year?

465 I think? Open to correction on that.

Nearly certain you've to do maths or maths methods as Bajingo said

Hi guys, I'm going to be starting science in september and I can't wait ! I just have a few questions that I hope you can help me with.

First of all I'm not sure whether to do maths or maths methods, I got a C1 in Higher Maths so would it be too much of an ask for me to take maths ? And sorry for sounding ignorant but what exactly is maths methods and is it similar in any way to leaving cert maths ?

Secondly I'm hoping to specialise in either neuroscience or molecular medicine, what is the demand like for these choices and how is it decided which course you get as I'm sure some are more popular than others

Thirdly what is the situation with buying books in first year, will it be expensive and is there anywhere that sells college books second hand ?

    Thanks in advance :)

I got a B3 and found full maths to be difficult, granted I know realise with some work in it I would've got on ok. Maths methods is essentially the leaving cert course again if it were only to include matrices, calculus, discrete maths and alegbra and nothing else with some small additions.

Neuroscience and Molecular Medicine are two of the most competitive courses to get into along with Physiology, Biochem w/ Immunology and genetics.

Book wise the library has you covered. There's no real need to buy books unless you want them for personal preference.

Also when it comes to texbooks you're able to find some of them online and there's always electronic copies floating around which tend to get passed around.

First teaching week is from the 27th, so you'll have lectures from then.

Registration for continuing science students is on Monday, October 4th (A-L are 9.15am-12.30pm, M-Z are 2.00pm-4.45pm), from here. :)

Wonder if it'll be the same cluster**** as last year when somehow they seemed to be caught out with the number that show up meaning I had a wasted journey to and from Dublin and had to go back the following week. If only they'd had something like a list of who and how many people would be registering.

When will we find out out timetable and the like?

Bit weird having lectures before registration is it not?

We got the provisional timetable back in march when we were choosing our modules. I figure we just go by that and are assigned labs when we register.

Are we able to do modules which add up to more than 60 credits, or is that the limit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 AliceXD

Thirlled I got TR071 but I see it's possible 1st years can opt in evening language classes... do you think it's possible to handle the science work as well as a language? Or will the work be way too much? Just don't wanna give up on my LC french completely :p

No 60 is the limit. You'll likely lose the interest to do more than 60 as the year goes on.

While it's possible the language classes are a bit of work and are on later than most lectures. I know someone who stuck with them but most freshers drop them after 3 weeks or so.
