Can anybody clarify this for me? In the SF exams, does which moderatorship you get depend on your overall grade or just the grades of the prerequisites for that moderatorship?

I asked about this when I was considering dropping out a few months back, it's the overall grade and should a contest between two students arise for a place it goes to the student who on average preformed better in the 4 pre-requisite modules.

2 weeks until course offers! Anyone know what time the offers are out at? I thought it would be 4pm like the results but it doesn't mention a time in the yellow book. Hopefully it will be early like the results because I'm getting impatient!

I completely forgot about this..I forgot we're in a competition this year..

..i'm not sure but it's by email anyway and this year the admin were quicker with posting the results online than on the board so I would say before four..

It's by email? I thought it was a big list on the tcd science page! Hopefully it's early anyway, I hate waiting :(

I just thought I fell into some drink/Oxegen-induced time warp there for a second and you were talking about Leaving Cert. results...:pac:

Can I ask, what're all your plans after this degree? A Masters? Graduate Medicine maybe? What're the most popular choices to major in?

By and large it varies from person to person. From my experience two types of people take the course, those who want to use it as a basis for something else such as grad medicine, grad veterinary or grad dentistry or those who want to pursue science who will go on to do masters phd's etc.

Biology based specialities seem to be the most popular with molecular medicine, neuroscience, physiology, genetics, biochemistry and immunology and zoology being the most popular and thus most difficult to get into.

  • Registered Users Posts: 255 ✭✭JC06

Craguls is spot on about the people that do this course. Alot of people that I've talked to would like to do another course after it like vet or medicine and the rest probably would like to do a postgrad. In a way, this is a good thing, more options :) I would probably like to do a Phd after I graduate. The most popular courses seem to be molecular medicine, neuroscience, physiology, biochemistry and immunology, genetics and zoology. Everyone this year seems to have microbiology as their back-up!

Does anyone know how this offers thing actually works? I mean, lets say someone has molecular med as their first choice and zoology as their second but they don't get molecular med, will they get zoology ahead of someone who has it as their first choice if their overall grade is higher than the person with it as their first choice? Or does it work a different way? I'm confused about the whole thing :o

I asked in the course office awhile back when I was considering transferring to direct entry science in UCD. Supposedly it's your overall average and then it comes down to the specific modules that best incorporate the position. But if you're ahead of that person anyway it's like the CAO and you get the place.

Oh and hope you end up with Genetics! (At least I think that was your 1st choice...)

Thank you! Why did you want to transfer into science in UCD? And what kept you here? :D
So lets say someone got 69% or whatever and they missed out on their first choice, would they automatically get what they have 2nd, ahead of someone who scored less but has that subject as their first choice? Hopefully we'll all get what we want anyway, still can't believe 34% of the year have repeats

The two years general thing really gets to you when you only enjoy one of the three modules you're doing!:P UCD science starts specialising after 1st year so it seemed like the answer to a lot of problems at the time. I stayed because there's a large chance I still may try for molecular medicine next year too. 2nd year seems more interesting now anyway!

Yeah that seems to be how it works just like the CAO but with a different way of separating people instead of random selection. 34%?! I wonder if it's higher though with the new structure of 10 exams though?

It was near enough to that mark last year wasn't it? It's a huge amount then..didn't one of the lecturers comment on how bad a year we were?!

Also, micro is my first choice but if there is loads of people going for it second choice..there could actually be competition!

I'm so nervous for Friday :( Only got 52 so I don't think I'll get genetics. I heard that over 80 people have micro as their 2nd choice, not sure how true this is though!

Firstly, dont give up on genetics just yet, ive heard of people getting into physiology with grades like that and that is a popular course as well..

Also, I dont like the sound of 80 second choices for micro but i'd say it could be that high for a lot of moderatorships..

..plus with the high fail rate a lot of the competition is gone for first round..

27% of first years have them.

Can't believe how massive the figures are.

If you recall the state of the class facebook page the month before the exams you'd be less surprised. Granted no one in physics was still asking what modules were on each paper the week before the exams.

  • Registered Users Posts: 255 ✭✭JC06

The JF facebook page was surprisingly active compared to the facebook page for us 2nd years! I can't believe how high the fail rate is for this course. Hopefully competition for places won't be so bad now because of it :) Anyone looking forward to going back? :P

34% sitting resits is historically fairly normal. When I was in 2nd year 2/3rds of the people sitting physics had to resit the exams. They changed the whole structure of the course after that, bringing in a lot more continuous assessment (there had previously been effectively none bar labs).
In my 3rd yr physics class 50% of people didn't get enough to progress into 4th yr. And there are no resits in JS, you either repeat or drop out.
Even this year in JF MSISS I believe out of a class of 42 I believe only 8 don't have resits!

I'm so so happy, can't believe I got it!

Cheers :D I was surprised how many people went for..it still hasnt filled there's about 9 places left..

I think genetics filled..there was only 14 places wasn't there?..so congrats on getting it!

  • Registered Users Posts: 128 ✭✭CJTobin

The following courses have places left:

    • Biochemistry with Cell Biology - 3 Places Remaining
    • Biochemistry with Structural Biology - 10 Places Remaining
    • Botany - 13 Places Remaining
    • Chemistry - 13 Places Remaining
    • Environmental Sciences - 3 Places Remaining
    • Functional Biology - 8 Places Remaining
    • Geography - 14 Places Remaining
    • Geology - 10 Places Remaining
    • Microbiology - 9 Places Remaining
    • Physics - 7 Places Remaining
    • Physics and Astrophysics - 5 Places Remaining
    • Zoology - 4 Places Remaining
Bear in mind that some courses are known to accept over and above their quota, Geology being one, and Microbiology (possibly) being another.

Could anybody tell me what the asterisk means on the results sheets? I've looked, but can't find any indication as to what it might mean. Thanks!

Seems to be a problem with my module choices for SF.

    I've chosen 8 biologys, chem 1, and geography 2.

I've since received an email saying that i have to apply to the head of Geography discipline to ask for permission to take this module as i never took Geography in JF.

I don't really see the problem here?

The SF handbook does not indicate that JF Geography is a prerequisite for any of the Geography modules listed for SF.

Quite annoyed that i have to send an email to the head of Geography explaining my reasons and interests in this module.

    wtf?

Who is the head of Geography? If it's who I think it is she seems fairly sound so I wouldn't worry about it. I think you're right though, I don't remember seeing any prerequisites mentioned.

Tbh with you mate i haven't a clue who it is.:pac:

I wonder if she means contact the freshman co-ordinator of Geography?

If so, then it's the one listed in the SF book.

You're correct about not seeing any prerequisites as there aren't any. Geology says you must have GL101 from JF to take any of the SF Geology modules which is fair enough, but to find out that you have to ask for permission to do Geography in SF having not done it in JF is a bit of a strange one. Even more so when the handbook doesn't say this.

    Absolutely baffled.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,986 ✭✭✭Craguls

I was also under the impression you could only do a subject if you took 20 credits in it? Hence why a lot of people groaned about the lack of a 10 module or maybe this is for schols....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 381 ✭✭GlasnevinRed

Quite annoyed with myself. One repeat to do. (Microbiology) :(.
Hopefully should still be ok for Chemistry as it sometimes doesn't fill.

I may be wrong but I think it's a mere formality. Some of my friends last year wanted to take up Geology in SF instead of Chemistry but were told that because they hadn't done Geology in JF they'd have to talk to the head of Geology before it being confirmed.

Apparently it was just a case of asking them why they wanted to do it and if they'd be willing to put the work in to catch up (if needed).
