Where can i get a roof rack for my landie?
I love the Patriot but at nearly 1000 including ladder its just a bit to much to spend.
Thule roof bars are tooooo dam ugly
What else should i look at?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

The cheapest is probably the traditional galvanised box section steel type. Bearmach do one for £185 plus VAT and delivery, the ladder is extra. That price is from Paddocks but Jonathan Crozier does Bearmach stuff so if you collected from him it may work out cheaper.

Yes and No...it was done by Foley but it was my own donor vehicle (crewcab 130). Not bad for a 23 year old car (1987). Very popular in commercial ballooning circles...just like my 101's were :-)

Thats very very nice. Colour, wheels, tyres, engine and spare wheel arm are perfect, if I was picky (I am) I would get rid of the becon. Was it as good on the inside ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 144 ✭✭bumpydog

It was fairly standard on the inside plus a number of extras i.e. Eberspacher heater, 5kW inverter, DVD etc. Would fairly comfortably seat 13 people although, like all Defender rear seats, not suited to anyone who's too tall.

I'm sort of on the lookout for another Defender. I would be mighty tempted with the Overfinch 90 that's for sale but too costly at £17k sterling for a 15 year old Defender, irrespective of the goodies and 350bhp. I should have bought Simon's 90 50th earlier this year!

    I recognise that reg!

I am nearly sure ye guys brought myself and my brother for a spin from Strandhill airport one eve after you landed beside our house the eve before in south Sligo, probably 15 years ago though!

Ye had to get a basket rescued with a digger after it landed in a field also

The Ionian Blue metallic paint was done with many aerosol cans (over aerosol etch primer)! The end result was fairly good. The Rioja Red was done professionally (inside and out) by a company that Foleys use.

I had an email from the new owner today and he has done further work i.e. two new axles with vented disks, new bulkhead (see before and after pics below...big job!), sequential lpg (I installed single-point), TD5 dashboard (see pic), NAS auto console, heated lumbar seats, led lights, carpets etc.

The main positive thing out of all this is that *IF* he ever sells it, I get first refusal to buy it back!

Defo before that, I was still in school.

A1RUP was there, I think it was on a Range Rover at the time.

There is photos at home, I'll try and dig them out

You have a better memory than me then!! Would it have been this particular Range Rover Vogue SE "The Beast" taken around 1993/4. It was a 300hp 4.6 built by Ray Webb at V8 Developments (same chaps who built the engine in my Defender).

    Hi,
I'm looking to buy my first Defender ..budget 15k, as a daily driver with some light off road use. Which model is the most sought after when it comes to resale ??? 90...110.....commercial..... station wagon ...color, options ??? Any advice much appreciated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

15k should get you a decent late Td5. Most useable is a 110 station wagon but they are dearer and are €948 road tax (as will any other if you're not using it for business)

If you don't expect to carry a lot, a 90 is a handy vehicle especially off road. 110 hard top is probably the most practical.

Have you driven one before and could you live with it, it's an acquired taste but addictive! That sort of money will also get you a Discovery 3 but the road tax will be higher.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 193 ✭✭Donkeygonads

I've been checking them out for a while and I'm now in a position to make the move .... the tractor ride does'nt bother me as I've worked abroad for a while and had an equally basic pick up truck with a bumpy ride. Yes, there are plenty more comfortable, more practical, more reliable faster, more fuel efficent SUV's out there ...... but the Defender has its own unique history and unmistakeable adventurous spirit ...... space is'nt a factor so I prefer the look of the 90 than the 110 ........ so I'm thinking a 90, TD5, station wagon in black or Silver ......... they seem very rare on the Irish market so perhaps a trip to the UK would be my best option ?

The rear seats in the older station wagon models were facing each other ........can you relace those with 2 forward facing rear seats ????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

The reason 90 SWs are rare here is they incur big VRT and road tax but there's plenty in the UK. I have a 110SW but avoided €3300 VRT as I owned it 6 months before I moved here, I put up with the extortionate road tax.

Forward facing seats only came in as standard with the Tdci upgrade. If you do a google on Exmoor Trim suppliers, you'll find prices on forward facing seats, they do 2 types, a simple basic one and one that meets current regs (but big money!)

    SL370448.jpg

this is when i had her on the other tires

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 193 ✭✭Donkeygonads

Nice 90, the wheels are tyres really make it ....... must be baltic in the winter time or do you have to have your fingers jammed in the heater outlets ????
What does the County version give you etc ...... or is it just a spec name for a commercial ???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

County is a spec level that includes leccy windows, alloys, central locking etc on later ones. These may have been specced separately on a non county spec, no two Defenders are alike

    Hey all,

I've been looking at Master/Slave cylinders online and for my TD5 the offer two, one being a dearer AP Lockheed one? Are these off another jeep or just a better product?

Probably just a different maker of spurious parts. I've a britpart slave cylinder on my land rover and I've not noticed any difference between it and the genuine one :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

As Landyman says, the dearer part is the quality OEM part, the other a pattern part by Britpart, Bearmach or Allmakes. When it comes to clutch and brake hydraulics and safety critical parts I usually avoid Britpart and buy genuine. Some won't touch any of their stuff at all which is a bit daft as they supply Land Rover with parts, if you want a swivel housing for example only Britpart do them.

I'm on my hols at the moment in the North York Moors, this place is green lane heaven! :D

Drove Rudland Rigg the other day, 13km of rough track right right over the top of the moors with a steep rocky low 1st decent off the end. Think I've done around 150 miles over some of the back roads around here, really is a nice place to visit.

    Automotive porn! :D

That's a Tomcat which is an older version, Bowler went on to the Wildcat and now the Nemesis. Any of them can be made road legal like that one is (shame it's a rattly diesel, 4.6 V8 sounds much nicer :D). Both QT (who now do the Tomcat/Wildcat) and Bowler will do you a bespoke road legal one for driving to Tesco

Looking at €60-100k for a new competitive rally Nemesis but you can DIY with a kit like the one in the ad which is very well specced. For a lot of rallies they have to be road legal to get between stages.

Quite what the VRO here would make of I don't know, "honest, it' a 1979 Range Rover" :)

Hey folks, just watching QI there and heard that my beloved Land Rover Defender holds the world record for the highest altitude instance of a car. I'm not a petrol-head/piston-head/motor-head (:p) but if there was ever a motor vehicle that I would love to own its the Land Rover Defender! They are so cool! Just visited the Land Rover...they are so cool.
