Hi all - just back from the park..5.1m in 49 minutes...god its warm out there!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭iceage

Iceage i wouldn't risk it if injured. You could do more damage in the long run ( pardon the pun ). I tried to keep running with shin splints and ended up having to take 4 weeks off with a suspected stress fracture in my lower left leg.

Thanks I'll pass that on Elvis, he's got the shinsplints.. I've just got old legs! :) Went this morning and did a 5 miler in a reasonable time I think all things considered. Started to really enjoy it about the 3.5 mile mark. Sunday is definately a go I reckon gonna spend the next few days resting, stretching and preparing.

Come 2PM Elvis will be back in the building ( sort of )

My injury is coming along very well and pain is gone, now just light discomfort sometimes. Going out this afternoon to do a light jog ( not a run ) and stop and go with stretching along the way to see how it all holds up.

I'll do move stretches this evening and ice tonight and a decision will be made in the morning when i wake up and see how stiff my ankle is.........

Got my entry pack for the 10 miler yesterday!!!!

Guys - I need a bit of advice...

I have always liked to know I have a distance in the bag - so 2 weeks before the 5m I ran 5m on my own and I ran the 10m course 2 weekends ago...its purely psychological - but it means on race day if I am having a hard time I can HONESTLY tell myself I can do this...

If I continue to follow this through to the half marathon (which is my goal for the year...) am I right in thinking I woudl want to give my legs 2 weeks to recover before I repeat? So if the HM is on 18 September - I would need to runthe HM course w/end of 4 September?

    Am I mad?

If you think you're capable of running the HM course on the 4th, why wouldn't you be capable of running it on the 18th?
    Yes, you are mad. :D

Hi all, the training is going well for (some of) you I see, and like me, others have had a bad patch.

I havent ran in over a week unfortunately.

Was planning to go for a 4.5 last Thursday only to discover my 6 year old wasnt feeling well. Anyway to make a long story short, the poor guy was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and we spent 5 days in hospital, only getting back yesterday!

So needless to say my training has gone out the window. I am worried now, will I make the half on 29th Aug? Its less than three weeks away. Im planning to go for a 5 miler tomorrow evening and possibly a 8/9 miles on weekend. I will then only have next weekend to get to 10 miles in prep for following week. Will I be ready?!

If your not just do another, the great thing about Ireland at the moment is that there are lots of races. I was planning for Longford on Aug 29 until injury hit. I am only back today and i could at a push finish it but would i be doing myself justice for all the training and hard work..............no

So i'm refocusing now on Waterford on Dec 11.

There is Dublin Sept 18 and Galway Oct 2

If you feel you'll just be finishing then i personally wouldn't bother, i need a time or or running pace to focus on and if i can't do it i just won't.

Oh and i hope all is ok now family wise !

I just found out from next April my fan club will be growing by 1:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 765 ✭✭✭yungwan

Yea I see your point! But I was never setting a goal on time fr myself anyway. I ament a fast jogger as it is, so I will be happy to just finish and work on my time on subsequent events.

I just want to know if it will be possible to finish?

Oh and congrats on your news!

Yungwan - sorry to hear about your little one - hope things are improving. I think you shoudl head out tomorrow and see how you go - there are loads of HM options if you dont think you will be ready in 3 weeks..maybe choose another one as was suggested - Dublin is mid September and might just give you a few weeks more if you think you need it.

    Good luck tomorrow!

    Elvis - congrats..a little elvis running round...cute!

Folks I'm wondering is my pace terrible??

I was out in the park last night and I noticed that I was being over taken by anyone I came across, fair enough every one that over took me looked very fit and well into running. I have only been running since april but over the 12km's a ran yesterday I did not over take anyone myself.

Over the 12km's last night my average was 6.40sec per Km,, I'm tracking it with runkeeper on an iphone.

I've done 10km in 58mins before and I know I have that in me but I'm comfortable at my current pace and really enjoyed my run last night.

I think based on that pace, I will complete the HM in 2hr20mins,, will I be last??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,197 ✭✭✭elvis jones

Well a gentle 3.12M ( 5KM ) yesterdat at lunch and it went well. I stopped 4 times along the way to stretch and shake out.

Time was 29 min which was slow enough but i feel good today and no pain in my ankle at all. I iced it last night and more stretches today.

I hope to do 5 on sat and take it from there. I might be back but its going to be a slow come back. Only a few short races ( 10Km ) until the end of Sept when i start to build up to Waterford.

I'm only going to do a max of 3 sessions a week with a lot more cross training to save my ankle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

You'd be far from last, based on last year's results there'd be about 700 people behind you, maybe more.

If you've only been running since April you've got a lot of improvement to come. Keep up the training for the half, and maybe after that do some things to improve your speed - intervals, strides, fartlek sessions - and possibly target some shorter races.

Eh i did mine in 2:20 and i was far from last. How do you know those out running were only doing 5KM or so. You have to learn to run against yourself and forget all around you.

Also on race day your pace will be better as its race day !

I could have done a lot better time in Clontarf but conditions where awful, the 1st have took 1:04 but there was a sand storm on the beach on the way back and thus my second half took 1:16.

I work in miles so thats 10:40 ish a mile, nothing wrong with that over a long distance.

lol! People are always passing me out!!

Like RayCun said its not a speed thing at the moment. I only started out in Feb so I'm going to spend a year just building up miles. Next year if I feel like it, I'll try and work on speed. I'm amazed I can even run as far as I can at the moment. Next year there will be some newbies out there and I'll be passing them out :D

Yungwan hope the little one is ok and not too stressed by it all. Hope the running you is giving you some perspective and a bit of head space...and thats what's important. You'll have plenty of opportunities to run plenty of races.

    Congrats Elvis!

Thanks guys,, exactly I'm just trying to get my miles up and that should be my main focus. But isnt it amazing how quickly you can get your distance up? 4 months ago I would have never ever thought I'd be running 12km.
And what a great past time we all have :D

Oh yeah and you don't miss it until your injuried and can't run ! You hate others for doing it :p

Dow you wont be last..I will be behind you/ with you I reckon!!

Seriously you are doing amazingly well if your only running since April...I am running since May 2009 (couldn't run 100m when i started) and last year I set a 10km as my goal - which I achieved in August 09, this year the HM is my goal...

If its any consolation everyone was passing me in the park this evening...I try to ignore them and just race against myself...

    Cheers fungirl and dolliemix.

He is good, we are adapting to it well, injections etc, thank god.

Went for a 5 miler yesterday, quite nice, bit stiff at the 3.5 mile mark (as usual) but kept it up. It was good for clearing the head actually.

I am hoping to complete the HM as planned on the 29th. I know it sounds very scabby but I dont want to loose the €65 Ive paid for it!! I already lost money on a 10k I coildnt do because of a chest infection, so I am determined to do it. If nothing else I will use it as experience.

Goin to aim for a 8.5 miler on Sunday, dont know where i am going to do it though! Must get mapping!!

Looking forward to a well deserved glass of vino tonight!! ;)

Where are you doing the HM on the 29th? Well done on the 5m and good luck with the 8.5km.

What do you use to map - I am using mapmyrun. Its good but as I do most of my LSR on the Pheonix park it doesnt allow you use an existing map and edit it and then save as a new map - so you have to start from scratch each time..its a bit annoying.

Yea I use mapmyrun too, I find it good, it isnt 100% accurate but its fine.

Im doing my half in Galway on the 29th. Its not going to be a great one for me but Im going to do it anyway... I might even do another half before the end of the year if I feel good after it! Nothing like the post run glow to convince you to take on another event!! Silly us!!

    Hi all,
Hoping to do a half marathon this year and trying to decide between Dublin and Kilkenny. Has anyone here done either of these races? I'll probably be doing the race on my own so would like to enter a race with a nice friendly atmosphere and not too crowded..
Also, at the moment I'm running maybe twice or three times a week and long runs about 8-10km.. is it feasible to train up to half marathon level in 5 weeks?
    Any advice would be appreciated,
    Thanks

Oh God, I am so pissed off.... agh!

I mapped my run online last night for 9 miles.

I wanted to do it all on backroads around home, so I decided to do a 2.5 mile route and back as well as two off shoots of a mile over and back.

Basically I did them all bringing me to 9 miles, or so I thought.

Went online there again just to double check my run and I was under by 2 flipping miles. I had actually left out part of the route.

I am so annoyed, I havent outdone my 7 miles by much at all, its so frustrating. I actually only did 7.7 miles or something. FFS.

I feel like I will never get to 10 miles never mind 13.5 on the day!!

Hi Passoto. I just finished Week 2 of Hal's 15k training program. Are you doing the Novice Plan? So far so good.

What's the 10 mile race in October in Waterford?
