Nicely put @Typsygypsy!!

Sometimes we all wish we put in a little more effort!!

Doing a 10 mile myself tomorrow, but just my own LSR before I go on a night out with friends!! (Probably not the best idea a week before my first half, but whatever!!)

Have NO idea where I am going to do this 10 miles, sometimes I wish I had a fancy gadget to measuremy distance, so I could just run aimlessly for 5 miles and turn back! I have no park or anything never me really, and main roads are out! Everyone I know would pass me and beep their horns or ****e on about it next time I meet them (rurual bloody Ireland) and backroads generally dont do 10 miles! Ah Ill figure something out. please god I finish and hip holds out!

Thanks for the good wishes..am feeling a good bit better today (i.e. dont feel like I could fall on the floor at any minute :)) and half thinking I might give it a lash tomorrow if I feel any better...its a pity to come this far and not do it..although I would be much more upset about it if this happened before the HM.

Just be careful. You might feel great when you are well rested in the morning, but it would be a different story after a few miles!!

So how did everyone get on ?

I'm still trying to get out for my 4 miler!!

I reckon by the time I get back I'll be put to shame with all the wonderful achievements of todays 10 milers!

Well done to everyone in advance :)

So how did everyone get on ?

Did the 10mile today - not happy with it in terms of time, but really proud of myself for finishing.

Was actually a terrible race for me.

Not used to running in the sunshine - in fact never had. So I was very uncomfortable with the sun beating down on my face and after 1.5miles had to stop running. I was disgusted to be honest.

Picked it up again after 2miles, but it was really on and off until 4miles. Had a splitting headache too at this point (dehydrated maybe? Although I had drunk loads of water the night before?? 2 litres? Is that loads - I don't know.)

Was well fuelled for it in terms of pasta night before and boiled eggs and coffee with toast this morning. Had no tiredness in the legs or anything, was just the sun which was a killer.

After mile 4 I really felt myself improving. Had taken a lucozade energy shot at this point and was feeling comfortable bar needing the toilets.

Went to the toilet between mile 4 and 5 - 10mins wasted there but needed it! Had to wait for a toilet, lol, I wasn't that long IN it!

First 4 miles took me an hour!!!!:eek: Was terrible and I was really thinking about jacking it in then, but got through the last 6 in 55mins so I'm glad I persevered. From 4 on it was a bit windy and the sun went into hiding too so that made it better on me.

Felt physically sick at the end, woman at the end wanting to take my photo - I managed not to get sick all over her. Got some paracetamol off the Fist Aid guys and headed off.

Time on clock was 2.15, my chip time will be 2.05 and minus the 10mins for bathroom (I know you can't really do that but I am :D) it comes in at 1.55.

Not impressed by the time but impressed by my own resilience.

Bring it HM!!

hi all, Guessed we were in for a warm one yesterday. Each time we went up chesterfield avenue i really felt the heat!!!! Not enough water stations, going to look at bringing my own fluid on board for the future. Hills tough enough and throw in the heat. Had hoped 1,27 not to be but coped well 1.30. Hubbie and kids dead proud. Must say I am now concerned over half marathon, extra whopper of a hill, jesus are we sadists or what. Must say fab race, fab organization, I stupidly tore of my number at the end. went to get goodie bag, fair dues I was looked after, brain cells not working in the heat for sure.
Well next stop; the half oooo my god!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all - woke up feeling pretty ok so decided to give it a lash..."ran" it all - slow jog might have been more accurate!! Anyway my chip time was 1:50:30...but god it was hard!!! Its slower by 4 minutes than I ran the course on my own too weeks ago but given how sick I was earlier this week I am not going to beat myself up. The heat was terrible and I agree there werent enough water stations ...will bring my own next time for sure!! Also forgot my sunglasses and found the heat near Ashtown gate really bad..hills were not so bad..satisfied all in all....roll on the big one...:eek::eek:

You're tougher than you think you are! Well done :) You'll probably blow away your time for today with your first 10 miles of the half.

Thanks!

Feeling strange after it - very tired and a little bit of a sore throat. Would expect to feel like this if it was cold!

Have to really get the finger out and start training for the HM now. No backing out!!

Went to the race today with my wife, Mrs LeoB, she posted above. She done GREAT

Have to say I was personally delighted to see Cathriona McKiernan race. She was so accomadating to the many people who got photos of kids with her after the race. A real Irish sporting legend.

Anyway, well done to you all who competed. It looked one tough race and you should be proud of yourselves for finishing or just making the effort to take part.

Water stations seemed to be the biggest issue from what Iheard afterthe race so something for the organisers to look at for future events.

B.T.W Well done to the organisers on putting on what was a very good event.

I was too exhausted to post here yesterday, and I did a detailed report on the log, but suffice it to say that 10 mile absolutely creased me!
I had a very similar race to Peanuthead
I started out at an unsustainable pace and really felt the heat of that sun, overheated and ended up with a headache by 1.5 miles that took a while to shake off, had to slow down considerably to get over it. Didn't get my confidence back til about 5 miles (exactly when the niggles kicked in), was comfortable enough up to mile 8 when I got all excited (good song came on) and took off - terrible mistake, by 9th mile I was spent. The last mile was pure agony. Time was just under 2 hrs which was so far off what I had hoped for. But I learnt several lessons:
- you cant expect to run a ten mile race well if you've never run more than 7 miles
- driving from Galway to Dublin and back (with children) on the same day as a ten mile race is a stupid idea
- Dont bother even trying to run with friend who is nearly twice as fast as you, even if she says she wants to take it slow, you'll still try to go too fast
- holidays and birthdays are no excuse for being lazy in the weeks before a race and you'll only regret it later
- choose race day attire carefully because chaffing suck

Anyway, I finished it, and thats enough to keep me smiling. Onwards and upwards.
Time to get serious about this half marathon - just realised that we are running UP Khyber Road (really? seems unnecessarily cruel to me... as if running 13 miles flat wasnt torture enough). But Im looking forward to it.
Well done everyone out there yesterday, it was tough.

On the positive side you've gone further than you've ever gone in your life, and you have learnt a lot from this which will make your experience at the half-marathon better. Well done :)

The fact you turned up and took part is the achievement. Your finished and you've attained a personal goal and run further than you ever run before, that was the goal. Don't forget the goal...WELL DONE! :)

Times.......For any of us that enter and finish on time(our times) or faster, thats a bonus. Don't beat your self up cos you didn't hit your expected time, there are many variables, time of day, the weather/heat, the crowd etc..I get hyped by the numbers of people at a big run, and I prefer to run long later in the day..but on my own or with one two friends I'm on the mark always.

Well done to all of you, you turned up. Thats the achievment. :)

Is it possible to run Dublin half marathon if I've only run 10 miles so far?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

Yup, just be consistent with your training between now and then and you will be fine.

Well done to you all who ran the Park 10 Mile last Sunday.
If you're keeping going with your training for a 1/2 or a Full Marathon, please see the link below for group training in South Dublin.
So much easier then slogging out the miles on your own.

Kind of feel like the countdown is on now in a big way!

Feeling the pressure of this half and have thought of a way to get my training in in a sneaky way.

I'm signing up for the adamstown 10k and some more races along the way too - going to try sign up for one every week until the half - not for competitive reasons just to at least get me out there.

I also took up the boards deal for the 8weeks of fitsquad which I start tonight so wish me luck there - have a feeling I'll be dying tonight!

Well done yungwan you did it...! Try not to worry about Sunday take each mile as it comes - I bet you will be fine (you can quote this back at me / throw it back at me in 4 weeks time :D)

Yungwan, is it the Galway half you are doing?

• Closed Accounts Posts: 19 MrsN

Hi, I hope I am posting this query in the right place. Apologies in advance if not. I am training for a half marathon which will take place in 2 weeks. It is my first attempt at 13.1 miles. I have been increasing the distance of my long runs every saturday by 1 mile per week. I did 10miles last saturday and hence I am due to run 11 miles next saturday. The half marathon is the saturday after. I am anxious to get the 11mile distance covered to boost my confidence but I am worried that it is too close to the actual race. Can anyone advise me please?thanks a million

• Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,368 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

I'd give the 11 mile run a miss. If you've run 10 miles comfortably the race day adrenaline will help pull you over those extra 3.1 miles. Before I ran my first half the furthest I'd run was 10 miles and I pulled out one hell of a performance on race day.

Is it Dingle you're doing?

• Closed Accounts Posts: 19 MrsN

I appreciate your advice. Its the coastal charity challenge in Mayo. I may give 11 miles a miss so. I hope I can cover the distance on the day. Are gels necessary for a half marathon or will some jellies be sufficient?

Have you tried either in training before? I definitely wouldn't try gels in a race if you've never had a gel before.
