Must admit I'm looking froward to seeing the times as well, more for what they call the race rather than anything else :)

Hoping to do a half marathon this year and trying to decide between Dublin and Kilkenny. Has anyone here done either of these races? I'll probably be doing the race on my own so would like to enter a race with a nice friendly atmosphere and not too crowded..

haven't run either of them (yet, doing Dublin next month), but there were about 8000 entries in Dublin last year. The first half is on decently-sized roads, but it will still be quite crowded. It has a good reputation for being well-run though, and is good value.

    Back training official today.

3 or 4 miles at lunch to get back on the road. I'll do that twice more this week and get out for a long run sat or sun, fingers crossed about 8 miles.

I'm starting swimming lessons tonight as well. I'm hopeless at swimming and if i want to do a triathlon next April i'll have to get in the water !

Still aiming for Waterford in December and a few 10KM as well. The 1st one i'm looking at is Portarlington on Sept 25th.

I'm off playing golf in America for 10 nights at the start of Sept so who knows how much running i'll get it. But there will be a lot of walking and some swimming ( oh and EATING )

    Thanks @iceage!

Yeah, I know it is about self belief as well as anything else.

I have had so many set backs in my training I sometimes doubt myself!

Cant believe I have been training for it for the guts of three months now though. I am already setting new aims for myself for 2011, so that must be agood sign, although I have no idea how I will get on over the winter, I loathe rain!! haha

Does anyone else feel like they have to have an aim for ther running to keep motivated?

    Hi

I haven't been running that long to be honest and as I said before in my last post, the most I can manage is 6 miles.

Ran for about 3months last year then had to give it up. Got back into it in June this year, so haven't exactly been going at it forever, but the thing is, although I love the achievement of completing a race and doing it in a good time, I don't think I enjoy running and am only doing it as a means to lose weight really.

Does the enjoyment of running come in time or do I just need to find something else?

I think if you get rid of the notion that you "HAVE" to go running, and treat running as something you "choose" to do, it becomes easier. Whilst I always use an event as a motivation to go, I have stopped getting hung up on times etc and just enjoyed the time to myself.
I think after a while your body enjoys it oo, like when I havent been out in a few days I long for the buzz of it and the fresh air.

If you really are not enjoying it maybe you should try something else. its not for everyone after all.

9 times out of ten I don't enjoy the actual running part. Its the buzz at the end, the sense of achievement, the small improvements, the feeling fit and the clear the head time that does it for me.

    +1

Crossing the line in a time your proud of is great as well and knowing that all those hrs on the road have finally paid off ( and not just on the waist line )

4 at lunch today and went very well, i dropped my pace from the madness of tuesday and i finished strong with no aches or pains............i is back:cool:

Golf tomorrow and 7/8 miles on sat with a cycle on sunday.

I'm just going to focus on the 10KM in Portarlington until Sept 25 with my longest run set for the day before i go to the states, thats going to be 10 miles so i'll be well on track for the 10KM and i'll switch focus then to the Waterford half in Dec !

    Hi all

Elvis well done - welcome back!

Yunwan - keep going you will get there!!

I have had a bit of a setback - dont think I will be doing the 10m on Saturday - woke up with a horrid sinus infection yesterday and I am sick as a small hospital today...am well fed up - if not better from self med tomorrow I am going to the doc but doubt unless theres a mini mericale that I will be fit to run Saturday....disappointed...:(:(

Peanut head some days I enjoy running some days I dont BUT I always feel happy afterwards...like Youngwan said try not to think of it as something you HAVE to do..

    Thanks for replies and advice.

I've finished exercise now before 10mile on Sat. To be honest haven't done much and am expecting to jog first 6m and then handle the remaining 4 between fast walking (same pace as my jog, lol) and jog.

Just did a spinning class yest and some weight and toning stuff today. Might swim tomorrow.

What should I be doing tomorrow, drinking a lot of water and stretching? What should I eat?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 765 ✭✭✭yungwan

Aw sorry to hear that Fungirl. That is so crap, I hate when your body just gives up and theres nothing you can do. When I am sick with sinus and cold I dose myself with Berroca and Paracetemol. Usually works for me.

Peanuthead, if you have managed 6 miles jogging you should manage most of the 10 miles on the day, definately. The crowd will keep you going for sure. Id say you will make it to at least 8 miles if not the full 10. Dont give up at 6 because you think you should!

Got my 5 miles in in the flaming rain (have I mentioned I hate rain!!??? lol)

5 miles in the rain is like 10 in dry weather imo. But the endorphins kicked in around 3 miles and I was actually smiling in the rain!! Weirdo!

Slightly concerned about an ache I have in my right hip when running. I have had it every time I run recently, but I only have it when I run. I dont know what is causing it, but it actually doesnt feel muscular, more my hip itself. Im only in my 20s! This couldnt be right!

    Fungirl,, speedy recovery to you!!!

Completed 17km this evening in the LASHINGS OF RAIN!!! Delighted with this as I'm going to miss the 10mile this weekend as I'm on a well deserved holiday for 2 weeks!!!

Hopefully I can get out to do the odd 5k to 10k while I'm away. I'm not planning on anything longer until I'm home and then its only 2 weeks until the HM  But after tonights run I have the confidence that I'll get around the course.

Think I actually liked the rain this evening as well yungwan :p !!!

You should be doing no exercise at al in my view. Save the energy for tomorrow. Drink plenty of water and get a good healthy carb filled main meal in ( pasta or rice ) and get an early night.

The others around you will get you through and just remember tomorrow afternoon you'll be posting here saying i finished a 10 miles race

Hi all, I disappeared off the radar there for a few weeks, had a heap of broadband issues and got super lazy, between my holidays and a massive party weekend (which included my mother in laws 60th and my 33rd - am I really 33?) So got VERY little running done. And here I am on Frank Duffy 10 mile Eve wishing I had put in a bit more effort these past 2-3 weeks. Anyway, whats done is done. My longest LSR (3weeks ago) was 7 miles, but oddly enough Im pretty confident that I can finish this thing tomorrow. I'll be slow, and Im not even going to try for a time, goal for tomorrow is to finish by running - thats my only focus, dont walk, dont stop, dont collapse and die - if I can acheive that Ill be happy.

Best of luck to everyone doing the 10 mile tomorrow, or any other races, LSRs, or whatever your challenge is this weekend.
