I have to laugh at this being called a 'support' thread. The most ignorant clique i've ever enter. Not even a 'hello' back when I wrote on the thread. Maybe I should have said I'm running Triathlons in record time to get any kind of acknowledgement. Thx alot. Pack of licks.

I think you complete a triathlon and not run one as per the 3 different types of events in them;)

    Oh and get over yourself:)

I've been running the last few days and don't seem to be improving at all :(

I've actually noticed a real stiffness in my calves, even though I've been stretching. Are they over-worked? Haven't ran the last 2 days in case this is the problem, was going to get back into it tonight.

    Dot how is the injury.

Read your other thread, i wouldn't focus too much on Aug 21 or Sept eh 18:D

There are other races and having suffered from shin splints i can say it takes time to work with them and listen to your body !

    Hi All

Just back from my week in Cork and managed to keep the training going - 7.5km on Tuesday - then Wednesday I ran in a local 5km...which turned out to be 8km:D:D - dont ask!! The did 8km on Friday. No long run at the weekend but between the hills and all teh cycling I was doing I reckon th elegs need a rest!
Collected my race number for the 10m in the park this evening.

    Hows every one else going?

Dollie - sorry to hear you are injured..

    You'd be a day late!

Opps, must change the date in my phone so...:D

Training wise I'm back on track. 3 x 5kms over the week all around the 25min mark and a 12.5km yesterday 1hr22mins. I really needed a good week as I had lost a bit of motivation so delighted with that,, roll on next week!!

Thanks guys, I'm okay, leg not quite so sore, but still not right. Bit of a pain in the ass doing all the palaver (4 stretches for 2 mins each, ice, voltarol) twice a day. Going back to physio on Thursday evening so hopefully get gently back in to it next weekend.
Quite fed up & grumpy though!

Very little done over the last 2 weeks. Just some cycling and stretching and a little swim in Cork last week.

I'm off to the physio today, i've improved so fingers crossed i can start back lightly ( 5 miles tonight:D ).

I'm starting swimming lessons tonight to get ready for a triathlon next year so i won't be running as much now which in turn will help me but still have to do a bit when i get back for the half in Dec !

Dom you should get your hands on a form roller from www.irishfit.eu its like a massage at home on your lower leg. Stick it into you tube and you'll see what i mean. I have one ordered.

Out for a short 3.5 on Sunday to test the leg(lower right calve muscled bunched about a week ago) Stiff and a bit tight but not what I'd call sore if you know what I mean. Plenty of massage, no running and rest since the incident. Going again tomorrow for another wee jog, HM on Sunday so looks like I might be in with a chance to at least attend, and hopefully finish.

Mate of mine whos a proper runner taken a knock recently with shin splints completely out of the blue is gonna give it a lash as well I believe. So we'll be able to keep each other company at the back hobbling over the finish line. :)

Iceage i wouldn't risk it if injured. You could do more damage in the long run ( pardon the pun ). I tried to keep running with shin splints and ended up having to take 4 weeks off with a suspected stress fracture in my lower left leg.

Build slowly and find a 10Km you can do at the end of sept if you can and go from there.

From what you said on the other thread i drove from Laois to dublin for an 11am HM and was ok and even drove afterwards but it took until 8PM that night until i was back to myself 100%. I then got a chinese and ate it in about 30 sec:D

Stay over the night before if you don't like early morning drives etc. But if you like your own bed i'd drive that morning. Oh and try to rope someone in to coming with you as someone to drive home might be needed depending on how you feel.

Thinking about doing the Dublin Half - are there any dreaded hills?? I train indoors and despite putting slope setting on treadmill it's NEVER the same as actually facing a real hill!! Still haven't registered cos unsure if able for it. Anybody know what the course is actually like??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

There's a map up on the marathon site
The first half - that red line - is all flat.
In the second half, there's a downhill at the end of Wellington Road, then uphill on the Kyber. Then there are a couple of little ups and downs, then the Lower Glen Road is downhill into the glen, and back uphill until you get to the Ordnance Survey road.

get off the treadmill, onto the roads, and include a hill or two in your runs. How far are you running now?

Thanks RayCun. Had already checked the site but on paper everything is flat!!

I'm doing about 3 10km runs a week, and some leg work and swimming. Some days feel great and could run for longer (but don't have the time) and other days struggle to do 5 km. Total lack of consistency. Have done some half m. before but the last one (in March) was a bad one and left me feeling unconfident. Hoping by doing this I'll get back into my stride (albeit a very short one - I'm 5 ft. nothing!!).

Maybe take a look at following a half marathon training plan, something like this

And really, try to get some miles in outside. Running on a treadmill is better than nothing, but its not the same thing
