I was wondering do any of you have experience with moderators on larger fullbore rifles. basically are the good for the gun or do they cause problems later on down the line with the barrel. etc?????

i'v had a mod on my .223 now for about a year with no problem..reduced recoil and sound
also had one on my 6.5 that was again recoil and sound reducing and probably increased accuracy
and same goes for my .308, i picked up a t8 for it this week and it works great. i was just up the mountain with it an hour ago and it just makes the shooting of a large caliber very comfortable

No harm to the gun as long as they're fitted and used properly.

First step, get the gun threaded properly and get a mod with the correct thread size.

Little bit of grease on the threads helps.

Never leave the mod attached to the rifle in the safe/during storage. If you do this, you will have rust problems such as a pitted crown and maybe having the mod stuck on the gun if left long enough.

If the gun has a bipod, mind that when folded up the legs of the bipod don't touch the mod, this is only important if a. it happens and b. you intend taking a shot in that position, as the pressure of the legs on the bipod will throw the shot off POI.

Take care of your mod as directed by the manufacturers.

I have an ASE ULTRA mod stainless steel on my .223
I also have a reflex mod Parkerised on my .308

The Ase is dearer but i think If I was buying again i would go with another ASE, I got a good deal on the Reflex, but they are more cumbersome than the ASE.

Both make shooting without muffs easy and I do believe have greatly reduced my groups.

Is there a % ft lb reduction on impact of game when using moderator?
If so what is that % (e.g. 10%)

    Tanx.........cc30

have a remington vls 223 and a remington bdl .243 both with ase utra northstar stainless suppressor's, very accurate, had the reflex t8 aswell a bit bulky but done the job no problem, just light spray of wd40 and as said already take it off the gun and grease treads, bought my first 223 with t8 nearly welded on barrel got it off but as already said pitting on top of barrel, happy hunting.

Just to throw my tupence in here, a copper grease works best. Has a higher tolerance towards heat if i'm not mistaken. Still clean it off and replace with freash application from time to time.

Okay, not tupence worth, but you get the idea.:D

I've heard great things about PES moderators.

I had a T4 on my 223 though. T12 reflex mod on my new 308.

Psst, John, you're a mod. Never apologise. Say it was a purposeful omission to encourage new posters. We'll keep this between us. ;):p

An Ase Utra S7 on a .308 - Great mod, great results with little to no difference in POI out to 300yds with it on or off.

T8 on 30-06 and .243 - Good on the .243 and 30-06, but difference in POI on 30-06 was 7" at 200yds. Never really use it now.

Wildcat on .223 - Great mod, and very little in difference in POI with in on or off.

best grease is HFE grease(not sure trade name) for heat and Lube,we use it in work all the time on ovens that have moving parts; but at $125 a tube use yer copper/bronze grease ~€15 and a tin has so many uses :D

God I love my lube ;)

We regrease ever 1/4 if that is anyhelp. There is such thing as over greasing, just a lite swap to create a film.

Just not a big dawb, wipe off excess.

Thanks for the replies lads, heard stories of barrels pitting from the use of moderators, guessing from what ye said its probably due to disregard of the rifle.
Some locals complaining about the noise,
    so i think ill invest...

You will never go back, after firing hundreds of rounds through my .223 in the past 8 months; when I fired the .308 a few weeks ago I near deafened myself "ringing ears"

So I got a mod on her, now no ringing, also Tight groups.
I pulled a shot in this pic I reckon ;)

lads would a mod on a 223 reduce the noise by much, would it be louder still than my 22mag without a mod

If you are getting your rifle threaded; it's a great time to get your crown worked on.

And it safes on costs, as threading & crowning can be done in one sitting.
In fact I'd recommend a recrown on all factory rifles, especially the cheaper brands or if teh crown looks pitted

The noise you hear is the sound barrier being broken "sonic boom"
I have a .308 and .223 and they bought sound on a par with hyper velocity .22 or high velocity .22

I can't tell you about .22mag, never heard one.

I can tell you that getting a .223 modded makes a HUGE difference when you're behind the rifle. PSHHHttttt instead of BANG!.

I rarely hit anything Poulo, that explains the unfinished sound :D

The rifle will still be loud down range. I was a crash test dummy for this once, behind a nice rock, can't remember how far away, it sounded like an un-moderated HMR and still hurt my ears.

your being modest now john, i'v seen the pictures of your success ;)

were you spotting for someone o'ing a rifle or was it an accident that you ended up down range of a bullet.

i had a magnum before the .223 and a mate of mine has a .17hmr and i would say the .223 with the mod on is p pinch louder than them but not much.

It was curiosity to be honest. We had heard the rifle would still be loud down range, so after talking it to death we decided to find out. It is. Not the cleverest thing to have done hearing wise.
