So now we're judging people on where they've travelled to?

Not a lot of people know this but I'm not a fan of the place.
    Not a fan.

Don't we always? I know people started treating me with a lot more respect once I mentioned in passing conversation that I'd been to the Isle of Man.

In Australia now, (Perth last week) ( but in Melbourne right now) alot of what the OP said is both accurate and way off about the Irish over here. Alot of the backpackers are pure knobs, full of liberal commy bull**** beliefs and spending there days drinking and smoking weed (I kid you not )

I thought and hoped hippys were dead but sadly are still alive and kicking in hostels throughout Australia. For the experience and crack we stayed in Hostels for a few nights and it was both depressing and great fun, the general dirtyness and noiseness forced us out to Hotels in the finish. It was far from cultured and I have far more time for the genuine Emigrant to Australia than a whackjob hippy backbacker type who has overstayed his WHV for about 2 years.

It's a cyclical thing. It used to be London and America where the ambitious, adventurous and hard working would go for a J1 journey to get some cash and garner some new experiences along the way, then it was Australia.

In the wake of 'ambitious, adventurous and hard working' inevitably comes the hoard, followed soon after by 'that lot that ruin it for the rest of us'.
At the moment 'that lot that ruin it for the rest of us' are busy ruining the reputation of the Irish in Australia, and you know who they are, the lazy self entitled 'ya roish' brigade that spend their days drunk on a beach and ring mummy and daddy every couple of months to cry about not having any money (because they wouldn't do a tap of work if their life depended on it) A summer abroad used to be a character building experience, now it's an extended holiday for the characterless.
'Ambitious, adventurous and hard working' have already moved on to South America, no doubt once a trail has been blazed you know who won’t be far behind.

I've a brother settled in Australia for the last 5 years and he loves it. He had been well travelled around asia, india, america and central europe but went to australia as a chartered engineer for the work. He's on sebatical treking through south america at the moment.
I think that sums it up.. It's a great place to live with a good job but not for experiencing a different culture. That's why my brother is probably in the back end of Peru right now.

I've no interest in the place till I can get a good job there.. I want to have a car and nice apartment there. Before that, i'm heading off 'travelling' around s.e asia first and then n.e asia. Teaching English as a backup. I even have it on my mind to learn some conversational japanese to get me by if and when I reach tokyo.

I went through Europe/North Africa during college and I always wanted to do "Oz" so when I finished my degree and before I started my PhD, I went to Australia, alone, for 6 weeks for a holiday. Not for a party, not for the craic, but to see all the amazing things the country has to offer. If that makes me a C U Next Tues, so-be-it, but I had a brilliant time and the time away from Ireland gave me a chance to make some important decisions.

Exactly, sometimes alot of people go to a place for a reason.
Where else can you snorkel with a whale shark, loung around a palce as amazing as Coral Bay, camp out on a completely unique place like Fraser Island, have an amazing sail around the whitsundays

It also makes you mad in that you wonder why other countries can have a functioning government/electorate

    so I could say

    "I'M NOT WEARING ANY LOLZ@!@!"

Yeah, I never got Australia. Never appealed to me in the first place, and why you'd go halfway across the world with a group of Irish people to hang out with other Irish people is beyond me. I have friends who met other friends of mine randomly in Sydney/Melbourne.......what's the point, like? What are you learning? People think I'm mad for having gone to France/Belgium alone because 'it's boring' but I would rate speaking a different language and meeting new people above hanging out with everyone from home in a sunnier setting.

why do people get so wound up about this? Its one of the few countries we can go to and work where they speak english. Id probably rather work in spain for a year but the reality is that there are no jobs, the money is not good, and my spanish isnt great. I spent 2 years in oz and nz and had a blast. Didnt get to know any irish in oz because most of them didnt want to know you when they heard the accent in case they get accused of only hanging out with irish! Wonderful country, nice people in general and was made feel very welcome at every job i had there. Oh and ive been to south america, lived in canada for 2 years, etc. if that makes my credentials any better, which some people seem to think are important! Just dont let it annoy you that other folk are having fun down there!

I think it's the attitude of some people who have been to Australia that generates the hatred for those who have spent time there. I'm sure there are loads of people who have been and never act all self righteous about it. But i have come across a few who try portray their year as some sort of pinnacle of human life and that you haven't lived until you do what they've done over there. I've one mate who won't shut up about the place everytime i meet him. Funny thing is that he forgets that i've been there and was actually kicked out after 6 days and banned for 2 years. I'd rather have that experience that the rest of his 359 days there.

I think that is equally applicable to anyone who's travelled, its not universal but there's definitely a group of people who think they are better than those who haven't travelled to different countries...

In fairness though, they set a goal, saved up the money, headed off out of their safety zone and broadened their horizons. They are better than those people who never quite did anything but repeat the same week over and over for 20 years.
