I'm going to play this. Timesheet not up yet. Have never played scratch cups before so going to get stuck into a few this summer and see what I've been missing out on.

Thanks for the heads up on the timesheet Whyner. I'll get onto our office and get them to open it up ASAP on Monday.

Anyone playing Carlow in 2 weeks? V early weather forecast is exceptional, can't wait myself!
Put my name down for it (foolishly?) this morning...
Draw will be made tomorrow and on their site. Should get in (off 4) so would have 36 on this Saturday anyway, whatever about the Sunday! Love playing Carlow and haven't played it much recently so I hope I sneak in.

Strokeplay. Overall winner is the lowest gross score on the day. There will also be net prizes.

There will also be net prizes.

Not always. Only prizes for best 3 gross scores last Sunday in K Club.

I think we'll keep this thread going rather than starting a new one for 2010 because it's nice to have the history....?
When guys are posting up details of Scratch Cups - maybe at their home clubs or maybe they've rang up somewhere or seen a flyer - can ye please post up the handicap cut-off's too (where known). They are not always standard and it's important to guys around the margins to know if they are eligible to enter or not.

As a very quick pointer to guys who have not played in any/many scratch cups yet I'll write a brief description (which will probably be wrong because I haven't played in many either!).
There are 4 different kinds, based on handicaps.
Senior Scratch is usually from +handicaps up to 4
Junior Scratch is usually 5 to 9 handicaps
Intermediate is usually 10 to 18
Minor is usually 19+ (up to 28?)
Sometimes you can play in these competitions if you are outside the limit but the most you will be allowed is the upper limit... this I'm not exactly sure on. Sometimes a club will run a few of these on the same day... other times you may only have one of these on at a time.

The winner is the person who shoots the best gross score.
There is usually also nett prizes (the same as most regular club competitions).
Often they will be held over 36 holes (on the same day, sometimes senior scratches are over 72 holes on a weekend with a cut after the Saturday). If they are over 36/72 holes, for handicap purposes each 18 hole round is treated separately so even if you play badly in one round you can still get cut in the next.
They are great value, often times much less than a single green fee for maybe 36 holes with the chance of a good prize (& cup) and the course should be set up beautifully off the back tees.
You might meet some boardsies there!

Just re-posting this again as it might encourage some more newbies to play scratch cups.

How are scratch cups doing? Generally speaking, are they still going strong?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 447 ✭✭NoelAPM

looking forward to 1 of these in the near future! still a few Kinks to work out.. haven't played in a few years ;)

Some are going ok but I imagine others struggle due to basically being able to play opens in most courses practically all the time! Maybe they have lost something on the way...

From what i've seen they're still going strong. Castle sold out on a Friday, Roganstown got over 60 playing in theirs at 40 euro a pop, Headfort was booked out (as per usual) in double quick time and there's a hefty waiting list, early signs for Lucan look promising with a good few slots already snapped up with weeks still to go.

Even the likes of Baltinglass last weekend was snapped up. I rang them on the Friday to get a time for the Saturday and there was only one vacant slot (for one player) available.

Why €40 for the Senior, but just €25 for Junior?

Have recently been given a handicap and GUI number but haven't yet recieved a GUI card.

Is it possible to play in Open comp's i.e. scratch cups, at other course without the GUI card? Is there ment to be a password with the GUI number or will that come when the card arrives?

I have no idea when the card will arrive as admin at my club is lax to say the least. Handicap sec was going to leave it in the office for me.. then decided to post it to me. So far he has done neither.

Not a question for this thread: BUT
You will need your Golfnet card to play Open Cmpetitions at clubs other than your Home club in most cases.
When you log on to golfnet.ie for the first time your password will be glofnet. You will be asked to reset it.
You Handicap Secretary is most likely doing the job on a voluntary basis fitting in work and family committments between maintaining the 600 or more handicaps at your club. If he is not up to scratch and you feel you can do it better run for Committee next year. It's the only way to make a difference.

County Louth Junior Scratch is on the same day, also 18 holes. Not sure which one I will play in. I hear Baltray is the older course and is harder. Anyone played them before?
