my newest tip....PACR is absolutely dead during exam weeks, your choice of pcs

If you're going to be living on campus, you could do what a number of us did on our first night living in our apartments and go knock on every door in your building and say "hi" to the people and ask them to join you in going around knocking on the doors. It's how i met my best friends here and its good fun at the same time :D

If any of you get river apartments, the ovens dont have details on the knobs so just turn the left one to ten o clock and the right one to 8 or 9ish. Also if any of you get Avoca 10, the grill shelf has been destroyed beyond repair from previous years, the only way we could get it to work is by laying down baking paper.

*checks comment for grammatical errors for fear of michelle's intolerance of my bad (yet accidental) grammar

Also quick sandwich idea for a quick filler inbetween lectures

Tiger bread (one euro per loaf in tesco)
salmon - for the lacto-peski-vegetarians like myself :D (3.29 last time i saw in aldi)
    butter - (grab from home ;) )
tabasco sauce - (1.12 in tesco)
    grated cheddar (1.25 in tesco)

Butter two slices of tiger bread
    Add grated cheese handful
    add two slices of salmon
and a couple of tabasco sauce on each slice

Leave in a preheated grill for 3 - 4 min till cheese melts - DELICIOUS!

If you're living off campus and walking to college every morning ... always, always bring spare socks. I squelched my way through most of November.

I will accept that! Though I would like to blame my shift button that lately seems to pick when it wants to work and when it doesn't! :P

Definitely agree with the spare socks idea!!

As regards meeting people, it really is impossible NOT to meet loads of people! I'm from Maynooth (here 12 years), so I was quite lucky I didn't need to sort out accommodation etc. There has been times when friends who commute have stayed in mine, no bother at all for the majority of people. It means everyone gets a chance to have a few drinks and not worry about travelling home.

Food on campus can be really expensive, so bring it with you or head home if you live close enough. It's the easiest place to spend unnecessary money, I'll buy this bottle of water for €2, despite the fact that it's free at home!

Simple things can save you lots of money!!

Anyone commuting from Dublin know if Irishrail do a 5 day student ticket similar to the bus one, and if they do how much does it cost? Website is anything but helpful.

They don't. There's a three day one for about €11 I think and a 7 day one for in and around €20. Absolute farce that there's no five day ticket.

Yeah it's an absolute joke alright. I guess it's too much to expect sensible public transport in this country.

For anyone living in Meadowbrook, Beaufield, Cluain Aoibhinn or any of the estates around there you might see the odd student on their walk to college hopping the wall the lines the back of the South Campus.

They are taking the infamous short cut, there are a few ways to take this but I myself find walking down the Canal a bit and then hopping the wall the best option but you do have to hung a wall for dear life and jump about 2 meters but its well worth the risk of your life to shave off 3 minutes of your walk into college.

    The short cut

If you decided to do you study in the reading room remember in January wear as much clothes as possible as it is freezing but in May wear as little as possible as the place is a sauna and a towel is required during this period as per rules listed on the door. ;)

They're bringing in paid parking soon

Don't park in estates, unless there is ample space. If you park in front of someone's house, they may get very grumpy!

If you're planning on driving, and want to park on campus, you should try get there before 8.45 to get a parking space. They are terribly limited after that!

It says €6 single there. If that's not it, give the coach operators a ring maybe.

Nah, don't park in the estates. It's way dodgier and you'll have to walk for ages to get to college. Don't park in Aldi carpark either. I think they clamp people for longer than one hour and stuff.

Get in early to get a good spot. For the past two years, it's been really hard to find a spot after 10AM every morning, EXCEPT for Friday. There is loads of parking on Fridays for some reason.

If they're bringing in this paid parking scheme, I'd say we'll see a lot less cars on campus, and with the added benefit of another car park (apparently), it should be better this year.

What's Maynooth like for getting a part-time/weekend job? Would it be too much hassle to get one in Dublin?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 113 ✭✭itchyblood

You might find some work. Then again, it is a small town so there isn't loads of work. You should look in Liffey Valley as well, seen as it's only 10 or 15 mins away from Maynooth.

Not sure if this is the place to ask,but how do you choose your three subjects for first year arts?
Is there any possability that there'd be no places left in certain courses?

Try to have picked what you think you might want to do by registratrion. As far as I know/remember there are enough places for everyone, no first come first served, especially seeing as registeration is done in alphabetical order.
If you are not sure of your subjects, you can move around and try others for up to 3 weeks (I think), and once you have decided for definite you can change them/keep the ones you want. :)

Does anyone know what time the Mature Orientation begins at next week?

I am guessing it will be 9 but just thought I would ask here before ringing the college to make sure.
