We get a few posters on here asking about the local pubs, shops, trains, etc. So, I thought I'd start at thread where we could all this stuff in one handy place. I'll get the ball rolling.

    Travel

    1. Trains

The easiest way to check trains going to/from Maynooth is from this site:

    http://irishrail.ie/home/

The last train out of Maynooth is 23:15-ish every day except Sunday.

    2. Bus

The following buses go from Dublin city centre to Maynooth: (linked to timetables)

    66
    67a

    They leave from Pearse Station

    Taxis

Maynooth Cabs are the cheapest taxi company. Located just off main street, they have a flat rate of 6 euro for travel between any two parts of Maynooth.

Tesco is 24 hour, always good for a midnight wander :)

no meeting place like dunnes was when it was 24 hr but still...

also, get your photos printed here...cheapest place-if you print 150+ photos they're only 5c each. pretty sure it's the cheapest in maynooth :)

Any buses to Dublin Airport and UCD?

More importantly, cheapest place to buy drink? :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 152 ✭✭masherella88

SU on mondays-it was €3 drinks all day

shop-wise...tesco, aldi, lidl...the roost off-licence and the mill might be worth checking out too. maybe, i'm not too sure, aldi is where i bought mine-close to campus so didn't have to carry it back so far :D

Afraid not :( You have to go into Dublin first. 16a or 41 to the airport, 3 to Belfield (code for UCD)

You can get the 67a or the 66 to Liffey Valley shopping centre and there is a shuttle bus from there to the airport, that way you're not backtracking. Its called the flybus, departs every hour from the N4 footbridge there at liffey valley.

    Monday Nights

    SU for cheap booze

    O'Neills for a 'night out'

    Caulfields for Jazz

    Tuesday night

Used to be LA, but now kind of do whatever you want night. I wonder what Mantra will do? I usually stay in with cans and a DVD here

    Wednesday

Brady's (downstairs, nicest pint in town IMO)

    Thursday

Roost, but Caulfields has a good buzz with a 50's and 60's Rock 'n' Roll band

You could be their prison b*tch or whatever the rugby version of that is :)

    Accommodation

Kingsbry, Meadowbrook, Beaufield, anywhere with the word 'Newtown' in it is quite the walk for a nine o'clock lecture. Houses are grand but not great. Rent is reasonable enough, should be definitely less than €90/week. A house in Griffin Rath Hall/Manor would also be far enough as well as Maynooth Hall but these houses are very new, less than 3 years old. On-campus is quite expensive but I believe it's a good meeting ground for first years. Old Greenfield is about as rough as you can get and it's not even that bad. House typically hold 5 people so be awful careful if you see a house in Kingsbry that holds 7, I made that mistake and it was so cramped because those houses are teency. Make sure you're on an official registered list of tenants in case things go belly up with your landlord, just have your bases covered. That's all I can proffer for now, other people's 2 cents can be deposited below ;)

Do the 09/10 timetables go up online before the semester starts, and if so, how early? I have two children and childcare to think of, so the sooner the better!

    Thank you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,195 ✭✭✭✭Michellenman

I know the first years ones weren't up before we started last year. You'll get it on your orientation day though which is about a week before the semester starts.

Do you need to play rugby for a club to give it a go in the collage?, cause ive not played for years but wanna give it a go again

No you don't. There are 3 teams; 1sts, 2nds and Freshers. The 1st team would be all club players and play in division 1, the 2nds would be a lot of people like yourself and beginners with a few experienced heads thrown in and they play in Division 2 and finally freshers are first years so it just depends on that year but generally there's a good mix of beginners and club players, the freshers have reached the all ireland final 3 years in a row and lost :( (Waterford and Carlow are the big teams).

Training is every Monday at 6 (on the Astro turf) and matches usually kick off at about 2 on Wednesday (matches don't take place every week). Even on the first Monday of college there should be some form of training (last year it was strip tip :D) on the Monday so check it out.

Hey i'm heading into 3rd year accounting & finance. does anyone know if 2nd counts towards my degree? or is it just your 3rd year marks?

    Thanks!!!:):)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,352 ✭✭✭funky penguin

Just 3rd year, isn't it? But if your second year marks are better, they're taken into account or something? I suppose I shouldn't really answer....

theres free tea every day in pudgin hall at 11 and most wensdays in the arts block.

    LEARN WHERE THE AULA IS!!!
it annoys people directing traffic at your graduation, that you have been here for 3 or 4 years and you still dont know where the aula is.

I know someone already posted looking for a start and finish date for a course, but the reply link only showed the finish date for the first year. How would I go about finding out the finish date for the end of the course. Its three years. Would it be admissions I'd need to ring?

There is only 1 rule about the split between 2nd/3rd year marks when it comes to your final degree mark, but it does not apply to all courses. It's basically a) optional split, or b) just 3rd marks count for your degree.

You can CHOOSE to split your marks 30% 2nd year to 70% 3rd year if your marks in 2nd year are better. Or you can go 100% 3rd year.

    C'est ca :)

Go to tutorials when attendance counts towards your grade! Might sound obvious but it can be so easy to think "ah, it's only a few percent". At the end of the semester you'll be raging if you fail because of this!

If you commute get a locker. Well handy.

Also, invest in some Milk Thistle. I swear by this stuff. A few drops in a glass of water before you go out and again when you come home and POOF no hangover! Got me through the torture that was first year €3 monday SU nights followed by 9-6 Tuesdays. Ugh.

I know from experience that bridge is a bugger, and from looking at last years timetable looks like I'll be over and back 10 times a day, anyone reccommend getting a bike and going round by Dunnes, or is it not worth the bother?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 108 ✭✭internetaddict

I went up there for college open day and I walked over bridges 5 times including my train station bridge. The worst one is the rickety one by the train station. They make me all shaky. Roll on September. I figure it might cure my vertigo though

I reckon it'd be fairly pointless considering you're not even supposed to be allowed cycle on the South campus in case Jim or whatever his name is catches ya and it'd take way longer. You should try liven up the walk by counting your steps across the bridge. It's great crack I think I managed around the 140 mark one day

Or go to tutorials always, like you're supposed to. That way the departments don't decide that nobody wants them and then cuts them out altogether. Because then you hear crowds of people moaning about the lack of tutorials. Some people want and need them regularly, not just three or four times a semester.

    Hello good Sir/Madam,

Yesterday I manged to purchase myself some Milk Thistle from the local market, due to your excellent recommendation! I used the product in question last night although it was quite perplexing to remember to take when you come in from a night on the town filled with shenanigans. It was a fine investment that will do me well over the coming weeks, thank you so much once again.

    Yours faithfully, xochillixo.
