Well that's just depressing for all of us 'normal' girls :( We're not even allowed on the tv now?
Isn't it more about too much skin being revealed rather than the woman being considered too fat though?

'Too much skin' is a euphemism for 'too big boobies' in this instance.

Nope I dont. Gorgeous face but figure wise no. Doesnt do it for me. Too big for my scrawny undernourished bony arse. Not pushed on bewbs much beyond a C cup for a start. Plus if she's a size 12, I'm a 6'4" hunky bastard who women cant resist(I'm not, just in case there was any confusion :D). I'd say 16/18 more like. And again bang on. Like I said contrary to the fashion industry's and too many womens take, men like me who like the smaller woman are actually a minority. Way more go for that woman's look. And more go for bigger again than go for smaller IME.
I noticed that as well, I kept thinking, how stupid this is that they wouldnt show her ass, which is probably just as nice as the rest of her.
Exactly. Usual "plus size, we love you" BS in play. She's in a very subtle way reinforcing the skinny stereotype, while apparently thinking she's making a difference(she's seems well clued in so I doubt she is TBH). Thats even more insidious IMHO. Like the "normal" women dove ad. The biggest size in that lot was a 12. Tops. I smell publicity stunt TBH.

The "too much skin" thing is BS as far as I'm concerned. She's wearing a coat/dress/shirt thing for half the ad! If they were really concerned about "too much skin", they wouldn't allow half the ads on the telly these days and the girls from DWTS would be made cover up more.

A size-16 lady flashing the flesh in an ad? Drool, Fap, Approve
A size-14/16 lady on Boards? Ew, You're too fat, A drain on society! Disgusting. You should lose weight. You're not healthy. You don't care about yourself.

American size 12 is a size 16 in Irish/British sizing.

Yep we'll show the bits that most skinny women dont have(bewbs) without surgical help, but cover up the bits that dont "fit".

I don't get it, where does it say it was banned because she's a plus-sized model? (God I hate that term, fashion's "plus size" is reality's "average" =/)

I think that is often the issue with models. Models are not meant to be attractive to men. They supposed to are attractive to women. Not sexually, perhaps appealing is a better word.

When models are involved the target market is nearly always women. Therefore the industry often reflects a womens ideas of what a beautiful women is, rather than a mans.

It would explain why often models have smallish boobs.

Yeah, but I think others are arguing the "too much skin" excuse is a smokescreen, seeing as there's never such a fuss over slimmer women (but also with big boobs) showing too much skin in ads.

    They don't, apparently
A source at Lane Bryant said: 'The cleavage of the plus-size model, they said, was excessive, and we don't think that's the case.

Just a cover up for not wanting her on the tv! Wasn't there a Dior ad where Charlize Theron stripped down to her nip, walking away from the camera? No complaints about that as far as I'm aware. There are countless ads on the tv for all sorts of underwear/perfumes, models walking around half-naked and you don't see them banning them.

Last one I remember them banning was Eva Mendes for CK because they showed a nipple. Maybe a bit of an over-reaction but fair enough.

Whether you find her size attractive or not, the point is the ad would be shown during Dancing on Ice, probably more flesh shown during that!

    PS. She is hot.

I think I should help inform the debate by letting you know that the model in question (Ashley Graham) is in this photo, third one in from the left.

    Ashley Graham and some friends

Fox agreed to air this but only if it is an edited version and they also gave a date of its airing (28th during American Idol) which is a bit odd for an ad, perhaps they only plan to show it once and no more after that.

ABC deny they rejected it and claim Lane Bryant are only after publicity but I don't really believe that. Whatever is being said still isn't the full story by all parties involved surely?

The brunette you ringed at the top. She has a very pretty face, redolent of Eva Mendes.

Sorry. By 'third one in from the left' I meant 'fourth one in from the left'.

    Obviously.

Seems to the same con as ever. Look at her without your hype eyes and she's quite slim.

If they want to put real curvy women on ads, they can find them anywhere, they don't have to use nominally different, Benetton "big" women,

In fairness, she has no real say in how the commercial is edited.

Besides which, she's stunning looking face-wise, and with a nutritionist and trainer (i.e. relatively easily) she could lose a fair bit of weight, and model for somewhere like Victoria Secret and/or be one serious pin-up.
That she hasn't done that suggests to me that she's happy to be "plus-sized" and proud to model as suchl.

There's little insidious about that, tbh.

Actually thought it was Eva initially. WTF is wrong with a woman resembling a woman? But that's it I suppose, the mainstream media and fashion rags pressurise women into looking like Celery sticks. I think most men like a woman to resemble a woman. ''God created woman and gave her curves.'' I suppose the media/fashion industry is merely catering for the discerning creep, who prefers the 11/12 year old type figure.

As you say it depends on your eyes. Objectively by comparison to catwalk models she's enormous(not hard to be). Compared to the average woman, she's taller with a bigger frame(very wide shoulders) and has the old fashioned hourglass thing going on. So she's still an outlier. Then again all models are going to be. You'll never see the day when Jane from down the road is on billboards, unless as an "ironic" thing. Subjectively I would find her "big", then again I find Nigella Lawson gorgeous in the face, but too "big" for me.
    davyjose wrote: »

True enough, but the editing is interesting. "Here's to bigger women, but we'll edit out the "bigger" parts".
Besides which, she's stunning looking face-wise, and with a nutritionist and trainer (i.e. relatively easily) she could lose a fair bit of weight, and model for somewhere like Victoria Secret and/or be one serious pin-up.

Yep she's very pretty, but she would have to drop a serious amount of weight to model for Victoria's secret type work. She would have to drop from an 18 to an 10 or even an 8. She has a much bigger frame for a start. Completely different body type and would be even dafter to attempt than the women already at size 10 eating 2 carrots a day, which is crazy as it is. No way would it be "relatively easy". So thankfully she and women like her havent tried and can still work in the biz. That part is good, even if its advertising hype. Even if it's advertising hype at least there's some movement in the right direction, as 10 years ago she wouldnt be doing this ad. So that bits good. The more the merrier.

Very much so. Most men, the vast majority I would reckon prefer a woman like that. Or even bigger. Thats been my experience anyway. Even when guys say they're into some famous skinny woman, they go out with the complete opposite and its not down to lack of choice. There are skinny women all over the place.
I suppose the media/fashion industry is merely catering for the discerning creep, who prefers the 11/12 year old type figure.
Maybe, or because most designers would be gay men, they prefer that look? Then again a lot of gay icons are curvy women so I dunno. I dont buy the line "clothes look better on skinny women" either. Yes, they do if they're cut for them. As a scrawny type I would look ridiculous in a singlet compared to a well built muscle guy and he would tend to look ridiculous in a suit unless it was very well cut for him. It could simply be fashion. A fashion that has self perpetuated with the collusion of designers and indeed women who buy into this. Like you said most men favour a very different size. I don't and would tend towards the thinner (fit not skeletal) woman. Its a personal preference. Maybe like attracts like? Or its just individual personal choice.

Meh, the model is probably just going to go out and lose a sh1t load of weight now anyhow.

Exact same thing happened to Sophie Dahl, started off as a plus-sized model and was all about being comfortable in your own skin then when she became famous she lost all the weight.

Obviously she wasn't that comfortable with the extra pounds.

There is also the possibility that when she appeared on the radar, the increase in her profile led to offers of increased work and earnings. This may have come with the proviso she drops the pounds. There's a lot more work unfortunately for the 'skinny's' than there is for the + sized girls. So money, financial security etc, may have been a stronger influence on her weight loss, than her own personal body image. Just a thought though, we'll never really know I suppose.
