Plenty of crap too but when Madonna's god she's very good.

I like the Natasha Bedingfield cover of Ray of Light better mind you:p

Have never heard that version, will YT it later. I just dont rate Madge at all. I see you have the Kinks in there too so you're not all bad!

Hmmm, probably mostly new wave and synth pop. I have a full set of Now albums.

I also listen to good music though. Well, my last.fm listings are in my sig so "good" is publicly debatable.

Have you watched Synth Britannia ?

I don't think its down to thanks, only ones I tend to thank regularly on this list are dlofnep, Wibbs and AARRRGH. Regularly tend to completely disagree with some of the others. The rest could go either way

You wouldn't have to though, they would be thanking you. And even people who disagree with you could be thanking you.
Though I do tend to post in the same threads as nearly all of the above. Maybe down to quoting each other?
    Dudess wrote: »
Think that's what it is - general on-thread engagement.

Thing about that is, I would imagine it's pretty expensive to run a query on the database to find that out. I don't think that info is held anywhere explicitly i.e. I don't think there's a table called Quotes where you can find out that information, instead you would have to go through all of a user's posts to find out who they'd quoted. That's a lot of posts.

It could be down to the number of times you've both posted in the same threads but again that's a lot of threads to get through, though I think that information might actually be held somewhere so it could be a factor.

I'd say it's more than likely down to some combination of the following:

    - who thanks you (determines who is on your list)
    - who you thank (determines whose list you are on)
    - friends
    - last X profile visits
    - subscribed forums
    - percentage distribution of your posts (i.e. 50% in AH, 10% in Humanities, 40% in Feedback)
    - threads you've both posted in

Thing is, some of that stuff is too much work to do (unless it's already done elsewhere) for a feature that's not a feature. Unless the guys are using this as a learning exercise for some future features (such as forum recommendations).

On the other hand, I can't believe I've put this much thought into something that's probably based on the sum of the position of the letters of your username in the alphabet. On Good Friday. Is that what Jesus would have wanted?

Will the equation used be revealed?

    I'm thinking:

Times they visited your Profile X Times you thanked them

That's where my money is ..

    No, excellent, thanks!

I'll even watch it before that eight part BBC documentary on bread narrated by Tom Baker (Bread: A Loaf Affair)I've managed to acquire.

No I'm not being sarcastic. It was on BBC4. It had lines in it like "From the exotic thighs of ciabatta to the mainstream baps of ordinary bread".

    It was a points system.

If you are user A and I'm calculating the matching score for you with user B:
    • 3 points for each time user A thanked user B
      • Excluding buddy list
      • Excluding ignore list
      • Excluding any user B who hasn't been active in the last 6 months
    • 6 points for each time user B thanked user A
      • Excluding buddy list
      • Excluding ignore list
      • Excluding any user B who hasn't been active in the last 6 months
    • 1 point for each time user A replied to a thread started by user B
      • Excluding buddy list
      • Excluding ignore list
      • Excluding mod & admin forums
      • Excluding threads over 6 months old
    • 2 points for each time user B replied to a thread started by user A
      • Excluding buddy list
      • Excluding ignore list
      • Excluding mod & admin forums
      • Excluding threads over 6 months old
    • 1 point for each time user A PMed user B
      • Excluding buddy list
      • Excluding ignore list
      • For mods, excluding PMs to co-mods
      • Excluding PMs over 6 months old
    • 2 points for each time user B PMed user A.
      • Excluding buddy list
      • Excluding ignore list
      • For mods, excluding PMs to co-mods
      • Excluding PMs over 6 months old

The points were added up and then adjusted to a 0-10 scale. 0 was 0 and 10 was the highest number of points by any person you matched with.

If you got no-one with more than 0 points, you were told:
I'm afraid we don't have enough data to find good matches for you. Perhaps you would like to flirt with Tar?

The interesting thing from my perspective was all the people complaining "I got all men!" or "I got all women!". If you got all men, you probably don't interact much with women and vice-versa. If you want more men/women in your list, start talking to them! :)

Most notably why I was matched with users who have sent me abusive PMs :)

    + 1

I think the top person was a random / done on different criteria.

So, even though it may have all been an april fools thingy. The points system you worked out actually does pair you with people you seem to share views with/talk to/engage with within the walls of boards?

If that's true then I'm off to ask Sharps out on a date. :pac:

Meeting "women"/"men" here doesn't count. They may not be the sex they claim or the age or even human.
