He split the county in two.
    That's a fact.

    saved the country
that's an opinion. And an ill thought out one at that.

Ah now lads come on. It was all going to be a bit of fun! Lets not start one of these threads again!

Are we that short of talent that we actually want to claim Terry Wogan? The Brits can have him, and Graham Norton too.

I disagree with the Collins bit.
Those not aware of well recorded historic fact will not know of the mess Dev placed him in on purpose and more importantly - why!
Dev was a two faced sod!

    Stop learning history from films.

    Give me some credit!

Historians have put forth after much study, that De Valera deliberately put Collins in this situation knowing that if he came back with an unacceptable treaty, it would seriously damage the reputation of Collins and weaken whatever political kudos he had in Ireland - therefore removing any potential threat he may have been to de Valera at a political level.

He does it in jest and you know he's not serious.
Wogan used to do it with full venom and you knew by his tone, he was serious.

Many years ago when living with me mammy, she used to flick over to listen to the gobschite and what he might say.
The treacherous leach would rant about the Irish, forgetting where he actually came from and where he started in the business.

Don't let my Mum hear you talk ill of jer dear Terence, she is a confirmed TOG. (Terry's Old Geezers for those of you who never had the pleasure of his Radio 2 breakfast show)

On a serious note, I wonder how much it would have cost the govt to pay off everyone's mortgage and if it would have facilitated a recovery of sorts at a much lower cost to the exchequer while benefitting a hell of a lot of people.

The thing is, we can't afford to lose all the money we've given to the banks - we are relying on the fact that most of it can be recouped. We aren't just 'giving' the money away, it all still needs to be repaid.

Paying off everyone's mortgage would have bankrupted the country as there was no way that the money could be recouped.

Everything needs to be paid for.

I see "make up words" man, David McWilliams pointed out today that Britain are still paying off loans borrowed to finance WW1.

I thin WW1 and WWII loans were finally paid off about three years ago, nicely in time to spend 24 gazillion bailing out RBS.

Seeing as how is was officially a British traitor doesn't than automatically make him an Irish patriot?

He was only granted British citizenship so they could hang him for treason.

His trial was great, it was a case of him being sentenced to death and then charges made up to justify the sentence.

He certainly was no Irish hero, that's for sure.

Just on that question, I'd say Terry Wogan a few times.
I remember a LOT of Eurovisions and he real spitefully knocking not just the Irish song entry but the person doing it as well ...and thats besides knocking our country for choosing it.

Ok some songs were absolutely bad but he should/could have been more professional about his words about it/us/the singer.

Wait, so he doesn't fawn over the fuckawful songs we field into the eurovision and you're convinced he's a *gasp* traitor?

    Jesus fucking wept....

WWI debts paid off in 1934, WWII debts paid off in 2006. Germany are still paying their WWI reparations though.

He might as well have been, being as his ancestors blew in from Yorkshire in the 17th century, according to the "Who do you think you are?" programme. Thank God he went home.

..and the only time that he was funny was when Father Ted's holiday caravan got wrecked.

Weren't he and his family informers, tipping off the British when they were living in Ireland?

Hadn't heard that before. I've only heard of his DJing career.

    I just don't like politicians

I think one of the main problems with Irish politics is that far too many ministers remember where they're from...

“I will not be accused of seeking to cause treason to my country,” he said. “I find that beyond the pale.”
    B Cowan

Sooooooo, does that mean his loyalty is to The Pale and so to Her Majesty in the UK?

Fraudian Slip methinks (yes I know... freudian - fraudian)
    ;)

That's it lads, I've only read this much of the thread so far but there's hardly going to be a more genuinely ****ing bat**** crazy post in this thread than this one... Or is there?

They can keep him as far as I'm concerned.

Mary McAleese is a traitor IMO. Utterly in thrall of the Vatican, and a traitor to her gender and to all European ideals of free speech on the basis of her comments in her speech in Saudi Arabia.

    Thanks. :D

If one is going to fcuk up, one might as well do it right! :p

    - there again if one poster bothered their arse to actually read my posts about Wogan, I said Wogan could have been more professional about his choice of words, not just what he was having a go at! I admitted we let thru some absolute junk!

    - Speaking of screwing up... Whats with all the multiple posts? One after the other.
The "Edit" button is there for use, not as a word function in the Chinese Propaganda Ministry!

Roy Keane walked out on his country.
Michael Collins split his country in two.
Stephen Ireland walked out on his country.

There's something about Cork. I'm going to say all of them.

Ah now, Keane only showed a bit of back bone.
Collins got us the best we'd get.
And Steve's granny died........twice.....give the poor fella a break.
