"Phat" PS3 error 8001050F thread

It's very strange, makes me wonder if this is all setup by Sony to disguise the fact that the older phat systems may be nearing the once thought to be untouchable door, that opens up homebrew possibilities and other avenues of acquiring games. Of course they don't want this to happen, so is it not possible that this is not affecting slim models purposefully because the option to install "OtherOS" has been removed, closing the door on geohotz exploit.

Recently Ubisoft revealed that they will be running DRM servers for there future pc titles, meaning the end user will need an internet connection to play the game with the original game disc in the drive.
If Ubi's servers are down, or down for maintenance, end users will be unable to play games until the servers are back up again.

Is it a possibility that Sony may be implementing DRM on there servers to combat what may turn into pirating PS3 titles, but are only targeting PHAT models? Hench the reason why even single player offline mode titles cannot be played. That's just ludicrous, I mean come on, who is going to believe the reason that was given (dynamic trophies). I certainly don't.
It's definitely a possibility that they may be considering to have yet another safe guard in place.

I realise that information has surfaced explaining the differences between chipsets in launch PS3's and phats, pre-slim PS3 outlining that the phats with a particular chipset are unaffected by this "Back to the Future" bug.

I call bs, I think Sony is hiding something, and I refuse to believe that such a minor problem as an incorrect date/time would halt the giant that is Sony, who it seems have the longest standing security system in console history.

By the way for anyone that agrees with digital distribution and DRM solutions here's a the reason why people are against it.

I think I discovered the issue. At roughly the same time this started occuring last night, I was showing my gf Nobi-Nobi-Boy.She wasn't confused by it at all and found it pretty normal.*
This caused a collective WTF moment from every ps3 on the PSN and they all forgot how to tell time.
I apologise for the inconvenience :(

    *this is actually,quite distubingly true

But this doesn't affect digital titles only, hard copies of games don't work either. So should people be against having internal clocks in systems now?

My Slim was working fine last night after all this started.

I don't see how this is just going to fix itself tomorrow, the dates in machines still wont be right if indeed that is the problem. Very worrying that a feck up like this could happen from Sony, could be very expensive to put right and possibly compensate everyone.

I read it as a problem with Sony's DRM as well? Thought it had to do with the online authentication system.

Yes but they'll be set to a date that actually exists as opposed to 29/02/10 which doesn't exist. That's what's screwing things up. The Internal clock is set to that but the OS knows that date doesn't exist so it doesn't know what to do. Hence the date setting to 31/12/99 and 01/01/00 on some people's consoles.

If it was a Sony DRM problem the Slim's wouldn't be working. It's an issue with the internal clock in the older PS3 models (the same thing happened to models of the Zune media player and Blackberry smartphone). Everyone's PS3 will be fine come 12:00 GMT, and maybe Sony will need to release a firmware update to make sure it never happens again.

I think the DRM talk comes from people who like to wear tinfoil hats and say the CIA orchestrated 9/11. It has nothing to do with online authentification either. The error in the date has just put a spanner in how the trophies in certain games works. This will happen whether your PS3 is online or not.

I know it probably won't make a difference whether I turn on my 80gb Phat PS3 or not but I'm not taking the chance. I'm going to wait for some more news from Sony.

It makes no difference if you turn it on or not. The error is already in there. Its like how the alarm on your phone will go off even if your phone is powered off, it still knows the time and date. It will sort itself out if you turn it on or leave it off. The only difference is you won't see the fault with your own eyes if you leave it off. In 7hrs 20mins it will all be over, most likely.
