Installed new chain, wow should be changing this thing far more often, shifting is much smoother

You could measure links if you enjoy such perversion, but for a fiver, chain wear tool is your friend.

I have the white ones. I love em. Perfect for days that have a very slight nip in the air. You can also wear them to a rave. Do people still go to raves these days?

i could, and they might suggest i needed to change it, but the flexability of the links between old/new chains is totally different(though i think old chain might have been 105 and new one is ultegra so could be that too)

replacing jockey wheels because they arn't free spinning like they used to

replacing jockey wheels because they arn't free spinning like they used to

Pretty straightforward to take them off, take them apart, lube them and stick them back on.

Not sure what flexibility has to do with wear, but the chain wear tool will give you a very good indication of when to sling the chain. The last one I replaced was just on the cusp, didn't expect it to be so worn. Replacing when worn will save you replacing cassettes prematurely too.

Yeah jockey wheels are easily servicable, 5 minute job to take them out, clean them and apply some grease, especially since they are sealed bearings or just bushings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

Oddly enough it has occured to me to lube them....... :) i'm guessing something got inside the bearings somehow but they still don't spin freely....

Did you accidently use glue instead of lube?

used teflon greese, which i have used with them before and it has worked fine last summer, though upon clean/re-apply they arn't spinning so well, guess greese might be too heavy

There is no significant difference between 105 and Ultegra chains, indeed some people think they are the same chain. It is possible for links to get stiff if you allowed the chain to rust a bit for example, I did this on my MTB even though the chain is not actually "worn" in terms of link length it still needs replacement.

    Talking about Ultegra chains...

This came via Shane Stokes twitter.

    Talking about Ultegra chains...
The multiple cracks do suggest a definite deficient batch. I have been riding an Ultegra 6700 chain all winter without any problems.

As far back as I can remember, Shimano chains have had a poor reputation. Because of this, I've tended to avoid them. However, the couple of Shimano chains I have used have worked fine without any issues.

I have tens of thousands of km on Shimano chains without issue. You have to install them correctly, I think a lot of the breakages come from people not reading the instructions and not putting the connecting pin in the right way.

I have also used SRAM, KMC and Wipperman chains. To be honest they are all as good as each other IMO, I have not had problems with any that I would put down to the chain. SRAM maybe a touch noisy but worked fine.

This particular 6700 chain looks like it has a manufacturing defect, it didn't just break in a way that could be attributed to user error, it is cracked all over. Note that the new generation chains have slotted links while the older (5600/6600/7800) don't. I have a whole winter on a 6700 chain and the whole year before that on a 7900 new DA slotted chain with no issues. Probably 15-20,000km between the two of them amazingly (I have other bikes but ride these two the most.)

Just ordered brake pads, gloves, lube, a gear brush, and another Cateye Strada.

    There we go.

Enjoy! - just remember to let it acclimatize before heading off on your rides to make sure you get something near accuracy from the barometer.

SKIL SHIMANO 2009 bibs, socks, jersey, cap and delivery for €85.50 and Quickstep 2009 shorts and gloves for €39.40. Note both shorts are M and maybe a bit tight on the captain so could be a good time to call dibs.

and the CC is getting rightly hit tonight, I've paid for the accomodation in Rosslare, Cardiff and Bristol, just need to pay for the last two nights in Paris or find a mate who'll let me sleep on their couch.

Oh, I forgot to mention on my bargain searching today I found these for €93, jersey (€36), shorts (€40) and overshoes (€17) which I though was a good bargain, you'll just need a Polish speaker with you (I know sklep is shop, after that you're on your own). Linky

I got my shiny new helmet this morning, fits perfectly, more comfy than my current one, just need to try it while riding now.

As I mentioned in the broomwagon, I ordered decals for my bike so I can represent on foreign soil and because half our club and loads more are on the same bikes it may help avoid confusion. Here's what I went for but with an Irish flag:
