At least you've found her! She was album of the week not so long ago. I think she's amazing, what a voice!

Glad to see another joinee of the cult of Newsom :)
Probably the most remarkable new musician of the decade.

Even though I'm much just be repeating the sentiment I expressed in the thread John just linked to, it's worth repeating how fantastic Joanna Newsom is. Musically, vocally, arrangementally(?) and particularly, lyrically...

Seriously, some of her lyrics are really astoundingly good. I don't know if it's just the cleverness of the concept of 'Monkey & Bear' that makes the lyrics so good, but that song really sets a new lyrical standard for popular music IMO, both in the words themselves and the sheer power of the story and the themes. I know a lot of people consider her lyrics difficult, and they are certainly compact - circus animals are 'the overfed dead', the named and catalogued stars, meteors/oids/ites and planets are the 'rote universe' - and yeah, I guess they are, but they are like good poetry in the sense that they certainly reward attention.

More people should listen to Joanna Newsom. Also she's very pretty.

Pretty much exactly what I said to a friend of mine after listening to Ys for the first time. :D

Such a f*cking shame she's not more widely known (as shown by the lack of interest/posts in her album of the week thread).

    I...um...hear she's fantastic live too.

The Milkeyed Mender was one of my favourite albums of the last few years but I thought Ys was pretty tedious stuff at times, all composerly pretensions and stifling Disney-esque instrumentation.. Those songs worked much better in live performance with the 5-piece Balkan-folk styled band, in my opinion, though I still much prefer the minimalist charm of her first batch of tunes. Hope she drops the 'more is more' approach for next time around!

edit- Joanna's Nevada City pals Alela Diane and Mariee Sioux are well worth investigating if you like Newsom's style:

Milk Eyed Mender is the one I've got my hands on. Reeks of awesomeness. After watching a few interviews, I'm intrigued, is she intelligent and very very quirky or intelligent and playing dumb?

Can't wait for the new album, and new live dates.

Ys was my favourite album of the last decade. Amazing stuff.

What issue of the wire was that? Also haven't seen any reviews of this at all yet as apparently she isn't giving any press copies to try and stop it leaking.

So do I. He's supposed to be rating peoples top album lists over on the Music forum in one of the funniest threads in a long time. There's quite a backlog at this stage.

This Newsom one. Like the music and arrangement voice could get on the ol' nerves pretty quick.

Her new music (one song a week at www.dragcity.com, and of course youtube) is just gorgeous. So far there has been '81 (reminiscent of Milk Eyed Mender stuff), Kingfisher (beautiful 9 minute epic that could easily have fit on Ys) and the highlight Good Intentions Paving Company (which suggests an entirely new direction). If the three songs so far are anything to go by, Have One on Me will be a gloriously varied affair.

Oh how I love Joanna Newsom, and would yelp in excitement if she announced a gig round these parts.

Got me some amazing tickets for the second of her London dates in May earlier. Debating on getting some for the previous nights show now.

Looks like about 1/3 of the tickets remaining only and they are not even on general sale yet.

Is she playing more than one gig. I only heard about the ATP gig?

Yup she is now dating Andy Samberg, which is a rather odd couple.

No word of a Dublin gig yet, but would yelp with excitement if there was. I'd love to head to London, but heading over there for a gig in March, so can't really justify another gig trip so soon :( She is officially the most fantastic live performer I have ever seen though. I spent her entire last Dublin gig in a state of swoonage.

  • Registered Users Posts: 71 ✭✭silver_surfer

Aye last gig here was amazing, I saw her perform Ys with a full orchestra a bit before that too and it was something to behold.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Can't see an Irish date anytime soon but she'll have to do a full european tour at some stage.

I got Y's (hadn't even heard MEM) 2 days before her last Irish date went on sale. After listening to the album once I just knew I had to buy tickets so I got them at 9.00 on the Friday morning.

    Instantly hooked!

I've been reading through her last.fm shoutbox (from the point at which people started commentating on their listening to the leak) and it's got me even more excited for this.

Its streaming on NPR. Listening to it now, I'm 3/4 of the way through and it is an unabashedly beautiful album. I can't really describe it in detail, too much to take in, but I'm absolutely loving it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 552 ✭✭✭RonanC

Anyone bought this on iTunes - only showing 3 songs for €14.99? The respective run times of each suggest that it's not each cd as one 'track'.

/mu/ are creaming themselves at this album. I find it OK if slightly bland. Only given it a couple of listens though. In California is a nice tune.

First impressions. Not good. Will give it another listen but again a bit disappointed given the amount of hype that apparently has followed her.

Pfft, i'd suggest listening to her first two albums before her new one, just so you kinda know what to expect.

Not sure what to make of it yet. 3 lps in one album is alot to get through...

Will do Lordgoat. which songs would you recommend.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 11,373 Mod ✭✭✭✭lordgoat

I'd recommend the albums, start with the first one(milk eyed mender) and move on from there (Ys etc)... I think everyone has different favourite songs of hers, mine would be Clam Crab Cockle Cowrie...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 650 ✭✭✭Aridstarling

Mine would probably be The Book Of Right-On. If I had to pick one like.

Listening to Have One On Me for the first time at the moment. Speaking as a complete Joanna Newsom newbie, i'm really enjoying it. Its certainly making lovely Sunday evening listening.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,733 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

Have listened to all of it now, and first impressions are extremely positive. It will take more listens to untangle fully, but 'tis as good as I hoped, and the quality is definitely maintained over the running time. Favourite so far is Good Intentions Paving Co. (which I had been loving since they were streaming it on Drag City anyway), but Easy, Have One On Me, Esme, In California and Kingfisher are others that have popped out as highlights. Again, more listens required.

Also loving the return to some piano led compositions. As a big fan of Inflamatory Writ from Milk Eyed Mender, that is a very welcome development.
