I did Foundation Physics last year. Struggled with it as I'd never done Physics before. Ended up having to repeat the exam in the summer aswell (moreso from lack of study). I've been told by people that did it for the LC that it wasn't too difficult for them as they already had a basis in the subject. I hadn't a clue tbh.

    Wouldn't know anything about geology.

While eavesdropping on John Rochford in my lab the other day, he mentioned that they're only to teach us how to answer the essay style exam questions so I reckon they won't run the whole year.

They'll run all year, a new tutor has just been appointed so there's two now to take all the tutorials between now and the exams. Essay writing will be one of the things that the tutorials will focus on, but there'll also be a focus on all the difficult aspects of the course (usually photosynthesis, genetics, biochem) and some of the more problematic labs (do you still do the glutathione transferase lab? that one always caused hassle).

If there's a topic you're particularly struggling with though just mention it to the tutors, that's what they're there for :)

Seemed like most people in my lab got through that OK, I did too til the end, dunno how I managed so many ****-ups in the space of half an hour.

I've to decide on either foundation physics or geology to make up the credits since I dropped full maths.

Anyone have any advice on which is the better course? Both would just be space fillers but since I'm going more towards the biology chemistry area physics could be tenuously useful (well by comparison to geology anyway)

Physics might be rather easy if we're allowed the newer maths tables too

Do physics! It'll be easy! Full physics is easy - I share most of my physics classes with them, the only difference is we do Special Relativity where they do Physics of Motion as we do Mechanics in Maths - so if it's easy, Foundation Physics should be grand. And Physics is always useful! Here's the local link which contains links to notes and stuff, looks fine. And worst comes to it, I could totally sit your paper.. :pac:

Thanks! Dunno how I missed this stuff earlier shall give it a look through!

Ooh, what colour? Can I do it? I'm awesome at dyeing hair! :P

Ah no worries, I have skills at finding stuff on the tcd site that are difficult to match. :D

Physics is not going to be easy for everyone. Especially if it hasn't been done in the Leaving Cert beforehand. I'm speaking from that painful experience.

What you forgot to mention is that TP students need a HB3 in LC physics to do the course, while the physics part of TR071 asks for no prior knowledge of physics to sign up for it. It is very similar to physics for TP (as you said).

Foundation Physics do half of the practicals that full physics students would do, but it's not that they're twice as easy. The same level of difficulty experiments are picked as for full physics, just Foundation do half the number of experiments. Every 2 weeks I believe. This was the case in 07/08, I don't think the changes to science from semesterisation changed that by much.

I understand that the lectures are simply easier than in full physics so that does make up for it on exam day. It's not just half of the more difficult course.

I didn't forget to mention that, I just.. didn't. :P TBH, the physics we've covered so far has been fine. I haven't done physics of motion so I've no idea what way it's covered (mechanics isn't easy but I believe there's an excellent lecturer for physics of motion), astrophysics is just a handful of introductory lectures (well, there's just 9 of them so I can't see it getting in depth), and the light and sound module is grand, the notes we're given cover pretty much everything.

You're right about the practicals afaik, I know Foundation Physics take a "selection" of the list of experiments we do according to my lab manual. TBH, I find the labs the most difficult - well, time consuming as opposed to difficult - and they're definitely doable. Putting in a little effort goes a long way in terms of marks!

And I'll always encourage people I know to take Physics anyway, if they have any problems, I'm vaguely useful and I like to help! :)

I still wouldn't advise it for people who are newbies. Generally. It is a course that has an element of physics taught for budding physicists as opposed to giving a general 1st year idea of the course.

I think the part about the Higher B3 requirement is the biggest objective measure I can give about its difficulty. What, maybe 80% of lectures are shared with TP and TR071. I wouldn't leave it out for no reason.:)

Do people in TP and TR071 physics still sit with their respective "classes" in different parts of the schrodinger??:pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,383 ✭✭✭Aoibheann

But foundation physics can't lead you into studying physics through science, so it has to be that bit more accessible.

And the physics students seem to be getting on grand - well, I *think* so anyway. :) The fact that we have to get a B3 where they require no previous knowledge is strange as we share most classes and tbh, special relativity (our only difference) is handy, I've done a couple of the online tutorials on it (nerding waaaay ahead of time), and I did fine. Also, I haven't studied physics in 2 years, so it's almost like it never happened, so I'm almost in the same boat as others.. >_>

Eh yeah, we sit all over the place, but we're generally with the other TPs. It's the same in Maths though, except for the few people who know each other from the mystery trip and any randomers who have been adopted into the other course.. :D

I know last year anyway we did many of the same experiments that the full physics students. Probably was half(ish) but was every week as Foundation Physics only ran for the second semester.

Ah. It changed with your year then I believe. I know they restructured science from 08/09 JF onwards.

:pac::pac: just about !!! Thanks for that.

I take it those notes are for the previous women we had ye? If so where can i get the notes for what we're doing atm?

    Cheers.

All the bio notes should be accessible from that link, the orders a bit messed up though. If you click modules it says which topic each one's are for. We were also mailed a link for the microbiology ones sometime last week, although they still weren't up last time I checked

Cheers mate didn't expect a reply that quickly, appreciate it!

How's things with yourself, you enjoying the course?/ finding it tough?

No probs, you caught me a good time :)
Yeah it's pretty good! I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would've, trying to knuckle down now though so I can polish of the modules before xmas and the hopefully ace the MCQ's. Having somewhat mixed success so far....

    What about yourself?

Glad to hear!! I'm finding it tough enough there's alot to digest and learn off. It's thrown at us quite quickly if you think about it. Best time to knuckle down would probably be now i suppose, otherwise you're looking at an uphill climb. I'm gonna' get started studyin' tomorrow cause i really don't want to fall behind yano' yourself.

If it helps at all most people in my lab seem to be handing up LCVP/TY CV's with the leaving results pasted in. I tried to make my skills and interests relevant to science anyway only cause...I was bored....

Doubt it, I think it's really just a test to see if we know how to use tables, format fonts and use all the word processing tools properly.

What's the story with these Biology tutorials, is there a timetable about anywhere?

I'm pretty sure everyone got an email about the bio tutorials a while ago, check your myzone inbox... Here's the times anyhoo:

    Tuesday @ 3pm, in LTEE2
    Tuesday @ 5pm in LTEE3
    Wednesday @ 5pm in LTEE2 and LTEE3
Friday @ 1-2pm in Lloyd building basement room 4 and 11.

Also just looking in my mail now, the last sessions slides have been sent to everyone. If you havent gone to one yet, I strongly advise avoiding the tuesday at 3 one, was there this week and the tutor had to turn a tonne of people away, plus made the ones who did fit in the room bunch up. I was doing the one cheek on, one cheek off method with a total stranger. Good for meeting new people though, I suppose...

Poor craguls having to do all the work.....perhaps you should have your own forum? ''ask craguls crap'' sounds like an appropriate title to me.....

    just jokin' folks ;)
