Folks you are all wasting your time posting these messages here. Yes everything you say is true, we are living in one of the most corrupt countries in the world. If we were a south american country most of the politicians who rule your every day life would already have been shot in the phoenix park, but not here in little Ireland. Hell no. We just continue to bend and bow and let the so called elite walk all over us. I'm irish, proud to be irish but embarrassed as hell to see what being irish has come to. How many times do we have sit on our hands and let these selfish pampered shower grind us into the dirt?? John O Donoghue resign or be sacked?? hell people wake up, he should be bloody jailed. same as the bankers, same as the developers who want us to bail them out. What happens to you if you cant pay your bills?? debtors court and possibly jail. why should the big boys who had it so good for so long be any different?? this country is on the verge of being bankrupt. nama was set up to bail out the developers and banks, see who pays for nama in the december budget.... YOU

Irish people love and condone strokers.

Irish people want to be robbed and get robbed. They love and deserve it. I and honest people have to suffer on account of the irish electorates refusal to remove Fianna Fail.

Wake up people. What more do you need?

Yes its true, the irish loves rogues, but to the extent where they are happy enough to be robbed by these rogues?? surely it cant extend that far but your right it does seem to. To be honest at the stage we're at right now I dont think even removing FF will do us any good, things are too bad. too much money wasted, too many promises made in the right circles, too much corruption in whats suppose to be a democratic state. In fairness whats the alternative to cowen? enda kenny? jesus that man should have joined the priesthood cause he's no politician. eamonn gilmore? a good man but no direction either. He's been huffing and puffing for a long time now and nothing's come of it. There's no quick fix solution I'm afraid. Someone is going to have to grab the situation by the throat and reform the whole bloody mess starting at the top and working down. The FF idea of starting with the poorest and working up the line doesn't and never will work.

He's giving some speech in the Dail today. Anyone get the feeling that a "Let them eat cake"-type comment could precipitate a 1789-style revolution?

Nah, me neither. We'll just relax our muscles and take it, again and again.

I think we need to start importing French people. They seriously would not take this behaviour in public office.

    Let's start with this:
Everybody email John O'Donoghue with the message that we are not happy with his performance and with his expenditure both as Ceann Comhairle and in his previous misisterial positions. Saw "I in no uncertain terms want you to hand in your resignation. For the good of the nation and for the good of the government. And I do not want you to receive remuneration for your resignation and I do not want you to receive a pension."

Everybody send this to him and everybody send it to their local TD. I am going to send it to him along with everybody in my address book. We all need to let this man know that 99.9% of the population are against him. If we all do it, surely he and the government cannot ignore the glaring fact that he needs to resign.

I have just sent my email just now. And blind copied everyone in my address book. I'm going to email them all again to encourage them to do the same.
    I also cc'd lunchtime@newstalk.ie and therighthook@newstalk.ie

Do people not protest anymore? Every single day for a week outside the Dáil with people calling for him to be sacked and then again when the next guy is exposed and so on!! I can't handle this anymore, everyday they are telling us how bad things are and how much me owe and they are the very ones fleecing us and bailing out the hob nobs!! What about the poeple who can't pay the mortgage or bills, or food? There are alot of them out there and they don't give two flying s@its!!

This is not a reflection on the Irish people or Ireland but the corrupt and elitist nature of the capitalist political system. Its the same the world over with greedy politicians and not confined to Ireland.
Did you not hear of the MP's expense scandal in England? Where politicians living in mansions with moats were buying duck islands with tax payers money?

true true. I also think most of the politicians in England are attempting to pay the money back.

I think everyone in here is on the same page. Its disgraceful how he had such a brass neck to live the life he has. He really believes he's in public office so he doesn't have to put his hand in his own pocket at all- ever!!
Everyone in the private sector would be very aware what expences are legit and what are dodgy! he just seems to have cast the view "put it on my expences" This is meant to be a "job" but he seems to think he's being handed a blank cheque- and he can do whatever he wants.

Although if we dug deeper into other TDs expences even in the opposition these would appear again and again! I heard a politician on Newstalk this morning with the opinion he is a great guy and serves us very well, and also seems to think his expences where a little out of kilter- but no big deal! WTF???? he jets down the country in the government jet and gets his car to drive down ahead of him to be waiting for him?? IMO he's not even a great politician- He's only been given the easier ministries of Sports and Tourism. i wonder why??

i for one hopes - John O'D and his red face ****s off- without a Golden Handshake!!!!! actually this little man reminds me of John O'D....

What's more fucking unbelievable is that the Healy-Rae dynasty is criticising him on his expenses.:eek:

You'd think that they would keep a very low profile in the circumstances.

ah sure oul jackie knows he's always going to be safe - the toothless voters from kerry are to him what the gummy trigger happy texans are to george dubya.

why can't politics be changed so that a lifelong career cannot be made from it? i'd like to see it made that only two terms can be served by any politician, unless they move forward, i.e. TD-Minister-Tanaiste-Taoiseach. that'd keep out the likes of Jo'D in the first place.

Someone made quite a relevant point on radio earlier and it has probably been made here.

What would revenues position be if your average Joe were to manage their expenses in this way.

Its not just Johnny Cash you know -

    Examples from Mail
SEÁN HAUGHEY charged the taxpayer for a stepladder. An invoice submitted on December 31, 2007, from O'Driscoll Office Systems, included E248.35 for a '7 tread aluminium' stepladder, E89.72 on three 27-litre bins and E15.03 on six 'large crates' which were supplied to the Dublin North Central TD
DICK ROCHE, now European Affairs Minister, claimed E3,057 for 'Christmas cards, art work and packaging' in 2007. Mr Roche also claimed E3,598 in advertising costs incurred for wishing constituents a Happy Christmas in local newspapers.
MINISTER of State Barry Andrews charged the taxpayer E6,132 for 5,000 personalised pens. He also received 300 pen pouches as part of the package. The Fianna Fáil TD for Dún Laoghaire, who is the Minister for Children, ordered the pens and pouches from the Booterstown company Creative Storm which is based in his constituency.

Keep your friends and collegues sweet dept.
Nor are the questionable claims confined to Fianna Fáil ministers. Former Green Party leader Trevor Sargent claimed for more than $40,000 which was paid to two Green activists.

This included a $9,080 payment to Ken Duffy, who unsuccessfully ran in the Swords constituency in last June's local elections. The claim was for the 'research and supply of information relating to issues within the Swords Ward, writing of articles to publicise events and Minister Sargent's work in the area', as well as 'drawing up of press releases pertaining to ongoing and new issues as they arise'. Minister Sargent also paid former Green Party councillor Joe Corr E31,511 to work as his parliamentary assistant in 2008.

Mr Corr was hired for the job even though the Department of Agriculture already has a dedicated Press team, while the Green Party has its own media office.

Fellow Junior Agriculture Minister Tony Killeen also snubbed the Department's Press team. He instead used his secretarial allowance to pay a private PR consultant almost E30,000 to carry out media work on his behalf in 2007 and 2008. The money was paid to Clare-based PR executive Mark Dunphy.

That's a laughable squandering of public funds. We paid to wish ourselves a happy christmas.

Although i totally disagree with his behaviour.

I am certain that there are other member of the dail in there today that have done similar things.

You must remember that as the builders creamed off massive profits and many a large majority of our population so did the TD's.

We were living in a dreamworld we must remember.

    Unfortunately it ended.

Dear (soon to be ex-) Ceann Comhairle,

I would like to take this opportunity to tell you that I think you are a disgrace to your office and to public service in general.

For God's sake, do the decent thing; pay back the money you owe the hard-working tax-payers of Ireland, resign, then get out of our sight.

    Sincerely,

To restate a post I made in the politics section disgussing the situation...
Just how twisted is Irish politics is examplified in the meeting that will take place tomorrow to decide his further fate!
See below pic - then dwell on this: How can they seriously do anything forcefully and useful when they themselves are at the same act to varying degrees (total for this lot - 1.3 million in the last two years alone!)!

Talk about hypocrisy! Expect something timid, full of hot air and PR soundbite spin.
    Nothing more.
