    Anyone have any better deals?

Just preordered it on The Hut.....was gonna wait for reviews, but at that price, I'll take the risk, if its muck, I can trade it in after a week for 30, so it will end up the same as renting it...

Review from PCZONE magazine is in. Looks like the first review.
    http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=224624

    9.0 is the verdict.

Looks like the fears of consolification are unfounded, as the reviewers claimed that the concessions to consoles are quite minor. Also performance is reported to be good.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭PogMoThoin

He mentions Hardcore mode in the review 5 times, as if its going to be too easy on pc and unrealistic to Arma II players.

Also consolised controls would be a big issue for me, I loved F.E.A.R. and Call of Juarez, both had great controls on pc, but I hated the second installments that lost the "q" and "e" lean and had an autoaim for console controllers. Controls for this game seem odd and cumbersome

    I'm still not convinced.

Ok i've been waiting for what seems like most of my adult life for this game and have been becoming increasingling frustrated and concerned with there being zero reviews online.Well i'm more than pleased to announce there is a review at CVG it is a review for the pc but they've given it a 9 out of 10 so even if it fails on the ps3 i can pick it up on the laptop.Roll on friday.:)

It's definitely a brilliantly accurate recreation of real army life, but that's not always best for a great night's entertainment. [Nov 2009, p.106]

More than anything, it's a game that, even after completion, we want to keep returning to again and again, adding different ingredients to the freeform formula and seeing what kind of explosions we can create. We can guarantee you won't have played an FPS quite like this on Xbox 360, but now that one's arrived, you certainly should. [Nov 2009, p.84]

Playr did a review of it this morning, gave it 7.5/10. Dont think ill bother with it, only 4v4 online. MW2 will eat it alive

PC Zone UK gave it 90%.

I'm leaning towards the PC version at the minute I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,320 ✭✭✭weiland79

It's not supposed to compete with MW2 i'm thinking more original socoms and ghost recon,I'm hoping it's less linear than, well less linear than everything else out there.Don't care at all about multiplayer, not my bag.

I wonder how much the bad checkpoints system (as per one of the aforementioned reviews) will affect the game...

weiland79 - Perhaps as a big 'thank you'...and appearing grateful to the people who went to the bother of easing your 'zero reviews frustration' by posting some useful links, quotes and scores...you could let us know your thoughts on Friday when you make the purchase. :)

For sure Irishman that's no problem, and if anyone else is planning on getting this game maybe we can look into setting up some co-op games in the future.(real psyched about this now)And as far as the bad checkpoint system goes i'm sure it's just pc users hating on console players(i hope anyway)

Great - Looking forward to your thoughts...as I think the game looks really good.

Re: Bad checkpoint system - That was highlighted in the Official Xbox Magazine UK review (above):

"What would help would be if Operation Flashpoint didn't compound the problem with confusing directions, a merciless checkpoint system and occasionally broken objectives. If you're particularly blunder-prone you can accidentally render a mission impossible, trigger a checkpoint that prevents you from backtracking to fix the problem and, worst of all, spend ages trying to work out what's going on because the game doesn't tell you what you did wrong".

    That's a bit worrying.........:(

It wouldn't be operation flashpoint if it wasn't a buggy mess :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,320 ✭✭✭weiland79

Well in regards to the 'Glitches' i suppose we can only hope they can be fixed with patches, maybe not the checkpoints but hopefully broken objectives.Just curious though are the people that are checking out this thread looking to get it for the ps3 or 360.And does anyone know if it has trophies.

This won't, its got absolutely nothing to do with the first game, just uses the same name like FarCry2 did, different developer studio, totally a different game.

This is going to be alot more polished than Arma, difference being the single player will be playable and most likely very good, unlike Arma. Time will tell with the multiplayer, I'm still convinced they're aiming at the run & gun COD/BF players. They got the amazing looking Dirt/Grid engine to start with so its gonna look spectacular and will run great on the average pc, also will have great Ati crossfire scaling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,320 ✭✭✭weiland79

hopefully not like farcry 2 i mean the gun play was top notch but having to fight through the same checkpoints over and over again just made it feel a little lazy on the devs part like they spent too much time developing realistic fire and not enough on different missions. My copy is gathering dust at the moment still haven't gotten around to finishing it.

To be honest, I think this is a good score considering. The guy comes across as if he is reviewing the game, not entirely understanding what the premise of the game is about.

Some promising stuff in here though I must say......
"Far slower, more strategic and more realistic than most modern war shooters – Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising is fairly sure to find an appreciative audience. At its best, it's nerve-janglingly tense as you plot and then implement the next firefight – where decisions you make have very serious consequences. But be warned, it's not a game that gently welcomes those more used to running-and-gunning, and even for the hardcore, there are serious problems with awkward command menus for your squad and bland missions at the top of the list of minus points. Online, with friends, Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising really shows off its best side – and the game is probably best played through co-operatively. If you like playing co-op, or you don't mind trading moments of frustration for a smarter, slower war experience, this is recommended."

To me that sounds very promising, well except for the akward controls.

Reviews will be coming in thick and fast now seeing as the game is out today in the states. Again, promising stuff.

    http://www.gamingheaven.net/gamingreviews.php?reviewid=828

Gameplay 90 - Very tense and strategic. Running and gunning will quickly put you in a body bag, much like real life

Graphics 88 - Detailed models and effective dynamic lighting.

Sound 87 - Fantastic combat sounds and realistic ambient noises set the mood perfectly.

Value 95 - Online with a bunch of good friends makes this almost a religious experience.

Overall 90 - Highly recommended if you are a thinking man who likes his action realistic.

    Maybe merge the OFP threads??

I'm definately getting it. Been looking forward to this for quite a while. Just glad to see (going by early reviews) that it's a thought out war sim, rather than the RnG shotfest many had feared.

I want to get this, but I am wary of some niggly bugs that appear to have crept in (not being able to close doors you're just after opening for example).

I bet there will be plenty of second-hand copies available next week when the console teenyboppers buy this and realise it is most certainly not in the same vein as COD. I want to see what the feedback is like for MP too.

I would ideally get this for the PC but I'm afraid my machine is not up to it :o.
