also i seen the anpr in a unmarker car.. there wasent a box on the back but the camera took up id say almost the back window shelf... might aswell have teh stripes on it it was obvious..

ANPR is a great tool. Now all the Gardai need are the same rights as police in the UK namely:
    • No tax - car seized
    • No insurance - car seized
    • No NCT - car seized
No authority to seize for no NCT. The legislation used is actually for no DOE only. We had this out (on Motors, afair). No-one, and there were AGS people posting, could refute my points on this matter.

From a member of AGS TC yes we most certainly can for no NCT. Can since the amendment to the RTA in 2006.

I seem to recall myself and Nog having this out with you over on the motors forum and showing the legislation clearly. But as this is a complicated area I will clarify fully.

NCT was brought into law by Road Traffic (National Car Test) Regulations 2003. This made the requirement to have a valid NCT and replaced all earlier requirements. The DOE for commercial vehicles is covered under the Road Traffic (National Car Test) Regulations 2004 which is also allowed for under the 2006 Act.

The original offence is covered under Section 18, Road traffic act 1961.

The power to detain vehicles falls under Section 41, Road traffic Act 1994.

The power to remove vehicles and charge an impound fee is covered under Section 4 and 5, Road traffic Act 1994 (Section 41) Regulations 1995.

The inclusion of the NCT for the purpose of detaining vehicles is covered under Section 19(d) Road Traffic Act 2006.

In simpler terms, S18, RTA 1961 makes if an offence not to have a roadworthiness cert for all MPV's. S41, 1994 gives power to seize for tax and insurance. S4 / 5, 1995 allows for s41 vehicles to be impounded. Euro 2003 puts the NCT into law and s19 2006 updates the power to seize to include the nct.

Now, lets not have anymore about the nct as there really is a LOT of Road traffic Acts and various other regulations to go through when you ask for proof. Why do you always have to question everything a serving member says? Cant you just let something go on trust or experience now and again?

I've seen plenty of cars with the ANPR units these days. Two different unmarked Mondeo's in Wexford with them, got pulled by one last week, and had a good chat to the Garda about it!

Says the amount of people that he's caught with no tax, and as a result of the cameras caught with no insurance is massive!

I've also seen four or five unmarked Mondeo's and one Marked traffic unit with it installed in Dublin. Got a good look at one screen of one when the car was in for a service the other day too! Doesnt look as complicated as it seems.

So, it seems that AGS have rolled out the system on a fairly wide basis.

All divisonal traffic corps now have between 2 and 4 units depending on the size of division, amount of district corps etc.

I wasnt having a go at you or denying that you have seen so many units, it was just saying that it puts into perspective how small this country is.

This is the relevant thread in Motors. I refuted all the assertions made by yourself and The Nog. My points there still stand.

Tbh, I find your last paragraph to be condescending. Do I always question what serving members say? Hardly ever, except when I firmly believe that what they are saying is incorrect.

Yes, you consistantly question and demand proof in cold hard internet websites to prove what we are telling you instead of simple thinking, "Hmmm he is a Garda doing this and has yet to be sued, maybe he knows his business".

Then I suggest you run directly to the Smods and complain about me, the mods in es and call me names while your at it....AGAIN!

Infraction given for aggressive posting. Please tone it down. Theres too much of this going on here. I have issued several warnings about this.

Ah i know! No offence taken Donvito.

It would be interesting to see exactly how effective ANPR will be. I suppose one car taken off the road with no insurance and tax will be a sucess!

recently got a lift in one of the traffic corps cars. It looks like a great piece of equipment. Funny to see it going mental when driging through a car park.

seen the van parked on the M1 to Newry the other day. No markings, parked under a bridge with indicator light on. They were obviously pretending that they broke down.

What happened to the claim that all vans would be marked. In the UK all vehicles of this sort have a sign up the road clearly telling people what is going on.

ANPR is a disgraceful invasion of privacy.

How is it an invasion of privacy? It reads a number plate, flags it if there's no tax/insurance, person gets pulled in and pays the consequence for not having paid their tax or insurance

If I recall correctly as well there was no claim that they would all be marked, something along the lines of 80% high visibility checks and 20% covert, I think I read that from a serving member on this board before but I can't be 100% sure of that, but regardless unmarked checks are great, I seen an unmarked mondeo the other day parked up on the side of a road with 2 Gardaí in it had the camera's fitted front and rear, within the space of 5 minutes it was off chasing someone, after they dealt with the driver they went back up to their spot and I wandered over and had a chat with them and they couldn't praise the anpr system enough.

    What would you rather,

-An un-insured driver crashing into you
-An un-insured drivers car being taken of the road the day before.

    ?
