Oh rite they must be based in bandon, havent seen any around kanturk which would be the northern part of the divison. I see a fancy looking volvo estate around. It has like an information board on the roof. I think it says transport unit. That prob has the anpr come to think of it.. Thanks for posting back i didnt realise the thread was old..:o

Oh rite, sorry for being so vague lads... What do them cars specialise in, i presume they have anpr but ive never seen the car at a checkpoint or stopped anywhere. I see a man driving it wearing a t shirt and sunglasses you would never think he was a guard.

That is the Regional Support Unit. The unit rolled out in Nov 08 as a new high visibility armed support unit. Cork and Limerick do most patrols armed now and so cannot be in standard uniform. Their armed uniform is combats and a navy polo shirt with chequred markings and Garda on it.

They do not have ANPR fitted.

Can a Garda car pulled in at the side of a road with ANPR read and capture speeding motorists like a Gatso van? Or does it have to be driving behind the vehicle?

So if you're caught you'll have to wait for a letter in the post or would they still have to chase after you?

Thanks, that'll be a good tool for preventing speeding!

Id have to get NGA to clarify but, i think they just "chase after you" and have a wee chit chat in relation to your offence. Im sure the boss man will be able to answer your question when he logs in.

If it's stationary they'll need to use a speed gun.

The ANPR systems work off an average speed system calculated by the distance the car travelled divided by the time taken which gives you an average speed of the car.

I was watching road wars earlier and the boys were behind a green golf. They could see the numberplate in front of them but on the anpr screen the plate was Just blank.... I think he put varnish on it!!!! He got a fair bolloking of the boys....:D:D

I dont think he was talking about the ultra lyte, just the anpr system in general, two points are taken on a road, odometer is started at one point with the timer, when the car reaches the other chosen point on the road, the timer is stopped, the distance between the two points is divided by the time which it took to get between the points, giving the speed.

Feel free to correct me :pac:

Correct. The ANPR system can have speed detection. Very few ANPR systems in AGS have the capability. It was not added to all. Only some have the maked road measures. As said, once the offending vehicle passes a road mark the operator hits the start button and once they pass the next one hit it again. You can then either chase the vehicle or take the video and send out an FCPS.

This system is not wide spread and not widely used by T/C. Much better to use the gun.

I wonder are they open to a legal challenge for speed calculations. i.e. as the ANPR is not stationary and both vehicles are moving then it's net to impossible to give an accurate speed.

I believe the episode noted that the paint used to make the reg plate is a substance which can be visible to the naked eye but not the anpr camera lens.

It has the same effect on speed cameras too.
