In terms of getting involved you can either sign up on Clubs & Societies day, which the date escapes me, but will be in the diary they give you when you start.

Alternatively you can go on to the facebook group and speak to the station manager Denis via that. Otherwise we will be in the studio when you are there during orientation week - it's in the Hub - and you can just volunteer with anyone there.

About starting off - btw you are NOT excluded from presenting just because you a first year. You can still apply. - anyway in terms of getting experience in producing and researching firstly just let us know what area you would like to work in - if its news, then we will talk you through the different news and current affairs shows we have. If its music, then the genre you know most about, and are keen to work in. It all about your interests - this is an opportunity to work in what interests you.

It would be a good idea to supply us with times you will be able to guarantee your availability throughout the week - and it would be appreciated that you keep to what ever commitment you give us, of course if you have something urgent you need to tend too, try and give us as much notice as possible.

And yes, I do quite a lot for DCUfm!

I'd love to get involved in DCUfm, espcially the production and research side of things!

Is it on everyday of the week and all day?

It broadcasts live Mon-Thurs (7)8am-11pm, Fridays 7(8)am-5pm. Weekends the station goes on automation - which means repeats plus playlists. Those times are to be confirmed.

Unfortunately the building which DCUfm broadcasts from (The Hub, the centre of student life) is closed at the weekends, which does only great things for the weekend life on campus and stops us from allowing students to benefit from the additional experience of producing and presenting weekend structured shows - apparently its too expensive to open the building at the weekends. But enough about that, you have plenty of time to get as annoyed about that as the rest of us.

Just make sure to get involved!!!

I was involved with DCUfm too last year. Even though I was only a first year I did about 6/7 news bulletins every week and I got to present 1 or 2 sports chat shows too, so there's every possibility you can jump straight into the presenting side of things if that's more you style.

Like giveliberty said though, it's all about gaining experience. No one's going to be expecting you to walk in on day 1 and have it down to a tee already, it's just something you'll grow into over time. The more you get into it, the more confidence you'll gain in doing it. If you're presenting you don't need to worry about all those fiddly controls in the studio or anything, we'll show you all how to do that. Similarly if you're involved in the producing side of things, we'll be there to help you set you off on your way.

Why did you always want one so?
Yeah the reputation, and friends have them and sing their praises. There are also a lot of programmes I'd love to have that are only available for Macs.

Some of the software you will need for course work is only available on mac too - or far more easily available on mac.

How much do you think it would cost a student these days for a half decent mac???

Now I know that's a very general question and I am sure you can spend anywhere up to a few grand on a top notch one, but how much would it be for one that does the job for what we need to do for the next 3 years of college???

Lol....I spent nearly €4k on mine, and that was with a discount lol.....it's a love thing though....and did I mention it's shiny?

I really don't think you need to spend 1500 tbh. I've had a look at the prices via the DCU portal page and you can get a very good Macbook with 2GB of RAM and a 2.13GHz Core Duo processor for €850. That'll do you absolutely fine for 1st year imo, you won't be doing any serious editing anyway, just light stuff. Then when you go into 2nd year it might be worth doubling the RAM and maybe a bigger hard drive too for around 150-200. I spent 950 on mine last Christmas and even after a good bit of video editing with Final Cut there a few months ago there's nothing it hasn't been able to handle so far.

I know giveliberty does a lot of design work outside of DCU but if you're just looking for a good Mac to last you the 3 years of Communications you won't need to break €1,000.

You are probably right.......but the shininess? I was taking into consideration them getting the care package, MS Office, Final Cut, iLife and the 15inch screen, but I do like the shininess when it comes to laptops :p

Yes I wou;d be very interested in getting one but I wouldn't want to spend over a E1000 on it, but them prices seem good enough for me

    Bugger to that :p !!!!

According to UPS tracking tomorrow I shall in my possession a 17inch MBP with 8GB of RAM, 3.06GHz, Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut, ProTools and a cinema display for home.

I can' tell you how excited I am!!!!

This is what happens when I become a student again - with an entire summer to do nothing I end up internet shopping!!! I totally blame Campbell for this!!! Teasing us with Macs all year!!

I actually cannot sleep - It's in Tamworth now, near yet so far far away.

(BTW, I know how sad the above makes me, but, eh don't care lololol, its shiny!!)
