The first rookie mistake would be to open the CC bill. They're best filed in their unopened envelopes, or directly into the shredder.

Secondly, it's important to sell on old stuff (and make a big deal of the proceeds) but play down the significance of the new stuff (oh that, it's just a new frame, the last one didn't fit me so well).

This strategy backfired badly last weekend when most of the returns from my Cayo sale disappeared in one trip to Ikea and a few minutes of shopping for kids clothing.

Nothing interesting yet. I might have a shed clearout of the *really* old stuff (mid-1990s road shoes etc) at some point.

Stop adding it up; there's no point in dwelling on the past. The only thing that matters is your current balance.

Best to get the stuff delivered to work - that's what I do.

Also, sleight of hand works well. I brought my latest shipment home and showed herself the new lights stressing how powerful they were and how'd they enhance my safety on the darkening evenings - she approves of such things.

When she asked what else was in the bag I just said it was a few bits and pieces to do with the lights without going into the specifics of it and trying to justify how a retro jersey, new bib-shorts, arm warmers and shoe covers make me safer!

Wow - that's impressive! I'm getting married this weekend and that's more than I spent on the suit!!

While on the subject of marriage - work are buying me a present. Can anyone think of a decent argument for them getting me new road shoes as said pressie???

I've tried arguing that it will make me much happier, which makes herself happier which makes for a more harmonious marriage - not having any success!!

Welcome to the Rapha club. They take more of my money than does the Government. You should also get the base layer pack - they are savage.

It sort of doesn't help when your wife works as an Auditor and is very good at it, and when she cut up my CC and got a joint one.......in fairness I deserved that, I was a disgrace with my own CC, I used to be one of those suckers who paid the minimium every month and never cleared the balance :o

I always do the selling the old stuff thing, I recently bought myself an nokia n97, and got killed for spending that much on a phone, then sold my old N82 and told her how much I made on it....back in the good-ish books :)
As happened to you my strategy failed too, she went and took the money and put it towards the mamas&papas cot/dresser she wants for the baby.

    Cross bike, is it?

And is your fleet not reaching blorgian proportions at this stage?

Cross bike, yes. Click the image for details.

I only have two in my fleet after selling the Cayo, and will be selling the Tricross Single shortly to make space.

    My modesty knows no bounds.

    Uncle John, I like it.
Paint job is naff though. Red bar tape doesnt work. Even though I have red bar tape on a bike - must change it.

It looks nice enough in the flesh, but is a cheap enough frame, as you'd expect for a 105/Ultegra build for that money. I'd really like a Van Dessel, but once I started adding up the build costs it was getting silly, particularly for something that'll get so much abuse.

The red bar tape will go.

Looks like a great STG price for some pretty good components.

I like the Planet X frames, looks a good 'un.

So do cross racers see the road season as their off-season?

No, I think (some) road racers see the cross season as something to do in their off-season, to keep a bit of race fitness and less boring than doing endless LSD* rides in the cold and rain.

    * not that sort of LSD. That would be fun.
