The cobbles are going!

For those of you that are away from Trinity for the summer, the work on wheelchair access for front square has started. It looks ok, but I'm surprised they didn't use a darker colour of stone, its very white/bright compared to the dark cobbles. A blacker stone I thought would be more suitable.

In other renovation news, work is starting on the Pav extension and access, a new cycle rack is being installed outside the sport centre, the gym is being extended and Dublin Velib has been installed outside the science gallery and a new building is being constructed behind the 1937 reading room. Lots of changes for Trinity.

    pics or it didn't happen.

Hope it doesn't ruin the aesthetic. Although everybody hopes that, and it doesn't matter.

The new building behind the 1937 is the Long Room Hub and will look something like this artists impression.

The gym is only being extended a small bit, they are removing the offices and making the reception smaller. The plan is to add a whole new area of machines. The gym will increase in size by approx 70sqm.

I don't know what the pipe on Fellows square is for, I assume water for the construction site?

    EDIT:
Actually looked at the plans there, the pipe is a temporary dry riser, as due to the construction it would be impossible for a fire engine to get in around Fellows square

If I'm feeling nice, I'll take a few pics tomorrow! Only a small portion of the path has been laid, from in front of Student Records to half way to the examinations office. Also interesting to note is that Trinity have bought the Coyle Hamilton building on Nassau St for €16m. I wonder what they plan to do with it? Student accommodation perhaps?

I didn't like it at first, but its growing on me actually. Theres other plans afoot in the college to demolish Pearse St the red brick building and Simon Perry building and replace with this.

College has a policy of buying up properties in the vicinity of the campus when they become available, since there is obviously limited prospect for development in College itself. For example, the banking hall on Foster Place in in Trinity ownership and has been lying idle for years.

Simon Perry building isn't that old that it needs to be demolished already is it?

After reading this topic I think I'll find it hard to listen to Trinity talking about lack of funds again.

I think that building beside the arts block is nice though!

Good news about the Gym extension, I wondered where all the equipment went to. All those buildings look ****e. I'm in general disgusted and glad that the recession may prevent their retardation.

If only the College could find a few quid to install a croquet lawn where the lazer huts are. Would finish off the square nicely.

I am not sure why you'd say this, the big plans for along side the rugby pitch pictured above are just plans, pending funding, the building by Fellow Sq is funded by PRTLI cycle 4, money that specifically supports that building and not general on-going activity, where the real shortage is; the gym development is minor and is coming out of the gyms own income, which is ring-fenced and the pav and re-cobbling are minor works mostly required to improve disabled access.

They have pictures of the plans in the lobby. Hope they get some bumper plates in too.

Oh right, I had presumed by the way people were talking about it that everything was ready to go. I knew the gym money would be coming from the gym, but whoever is funding the rest.. it just seems a bit of a waste really.

The quote from Transformers is "robots in disguise", "Transformers in disguise" is just all kinds of wrong:eek:

*Facepalm* and I know that - but trademark/copyright infringement doesn't only take place when you quote their catchphrase directly.

Not everyone knows "robots in disguise" - especially as the new Transformers movies do not really mention it (except as a byline joke).
